New holster and need more leather
Good morning. I developed a case of the wants for a holster for my model 15. I made one that I’m pretty happy with. Most likely will never seriously carry out and about although I found it to be extremely comfortable. Anyhow. I made this then made one just like it for my Glock 26. Now I’ve run into the problem I am completely out of tooling leather. Now I don’t feel like the leather I’m getting from hobby lobby is too bad for the price but the last batch I got had a couple unusable spots in it. So I’ve looked at Tandy and it seems to be a pretty good deal for a lot more leather. My question is. Where are you guys who make leather goods sourcing your leather? There are multiple tanneries where I live but they told me they chrome tan their leather. So not really ideal for holsters and sheaths witch is mainly what I make.

Springfield leather has been good. They also list on Amazon, but I don't trust Amazon on this. Got a piece that had no smooth side. They did take it back.

I was just about to post a similar inquiry. Thanks for bringing up the subject!

Tandy Leather is having their Black Friday sale this week. I just picked up a side of leather for what I would have paid for a shoulder. Lots of good buys and free shipping over $150.
Buy fast.

I buy leather from Tandy. Usually 7/8oz double shoulders. I sure wouldn't mail order it. I prefer to go pick mine out in person. They are not all equal.

*update* I finally had the time to go to Tandy leather. I didn’t realize it was so close to me. I almost broke down and just got some from hobby lobby again but I realized it was belly leather. So I figured I’d hold out and get something more better. I was able to get some diamond punches (I’ve been Using some punches I made at work that aren’t horrible but I love the way stitching with a diamond punch look.) and a single shoulder. I was pretty pleased with the price. They had the same type of leather I was getting from hobby lobby for only $20 so I thought that was funny.

I've been retired for 5 years now, so my information may be a little dated. Springfield Leather Company used to stock Hermann Oak vegetable-tanned cowhide and would sell by the square foot to hobbyists. There is no better source than Hermann Oak!
Most of the stuff in Tandy's and other hobby outlets is imported, some from Central or South America, some from Korea or China. No way of telling what you might be getting (some places still use the old tanning methods using urine and feces, and I'm just a little picky about what I want next to my body!).
Google Springfield Leather Company (nice people), give them a shout for Hermann Oak. Shoulders are great for most holster work, and sides are usually very good. Leather is sold by weight, with 7-8 oz. being good for most holster work, 8-9 oz. for heavier duty gear.

I find it odd Pinterest has so many posts with these people wearing leather face masks. Doesn’t seem like a healthy idea to me.
