One of my favorite holsters is the Lawrence Model 34. it is a
basic Threeperson's style. I have also been collecting "dog ear"
holsters for about 20 years now. I think I have close to 30 of
them. So, when I found this Lawrence Model 34 with a "dog ear"
I considered it a WIN WIN! The size code is stamped 543, so of
course it is a perfect fit for my S&W Model 10 with 4" barrel, as
shown in the photo below.

Yep, Threeperrson's style with added "dog ear".

Left to right, the Myres is for a 4" N Frame, the Heiser a 4" K frame with
fixed rear sight, far right the Lawrence is for a K Frame with adjustable
rear sight. They are all of similar construction with the trigger guard
resting on the welt.

Doesn't that "dog ear" make it a Sloan style?

Named after Hank Sloan, IIRC, 1960s era policeman to protect his shirt from being ripped by the hammer. Think he patented it.

Could be wrong, going from memory, and that ain't what it used to be.

Sloan type? That is a common misconception. Hank Sloan did
design his holster with a "dog ear" on it, but he did not invent
it. His patent was for the adjustable welt. The dog ear showed
up on holsters in the 1940s. Hank's hoster was at least 20 years
later.
BTW, Hank Sloan was not a policeman. He was an FBI Agent.

The "dog ear" feature was quite popular during the 1960's to 1980's. The leather extension serves to protect the sharp edges of the hammer and rear sight from snagging on clothing or being damaged by impact. I usually referred to this feature as the "hammer shield".

Most holster makers offered something similar, but this general design became popularly known as the "Hank Sloan" style. Sloan's holster design generally followed the usual concept of the Threepersons style, but with the hammer shield and frequently seen with a screw-adjustable retention device incorporated into the welt.

The photo in my avatar illustrates one of my Threepersons-style holsters with Hank Sloan-style hammer shield made for a 6" Model 19, hand-carved in Sheridan floral style by the very talented Wayne Wise.

Now, since my retirement in 2015, the same style continues in production by Lobo Gun Leather, now owned by the Fedders family, and Matthew Fedders is truly outstanding at the carving work.

I had a picture here somewhere of Sloan on a police motorcycle.
His uncle was Captain Tom Hickman in the Texas Rangers.

In all my holster collecting, I have neither a Lawrence Model 34 or a holster with a "dog ear". I need to look harder!
