Default TEXAS FLAPPER

TEXAS FLAPPER.jpg

Had this monogramed flapper made in Rosebud ,Texas saddle shop in 1982.
I have ridden on horseback with it carrying Model 29-2 4" and MODEL 27-2 5" in Montana and Texas since '82. Belt made at Waco saddle shop. Flappers protect guns from brush while bushwhacking on horseback and also keeps hammer from rubbing sore on your forearm while riding.

I've owned a lot of holster in my time. Here are a few of the flap type:

Lawrence K frame very fine Quality, lined, plug toe holster! The Heiser Colt SAA 5 1/2" as I remember. Both gone down the road.

Lawrence for a Ruger, I think but my 5" M&P fit nicely, both previous lifetime...

Three lined half-flap; Lawrence suede lined, plug toe holding a Triplelock target; Colorado Saddlery lined, plug toe, 4"K frame with a Combat Masterpiece; Lawrence lined 6' k frame with a K-38. I still own these.

I only have two flappers and both of them are inexpensive replicas.
On the left a Civil War replica with Colt's 1860 Army replica.
On the right a WWII military replica with my 1911 Colt.

Lawrence 603 is for a "Ruger .357 Mag, 6 1/2"
Model 100B for basketweave.
What a fine gift!!

Years ago one could find nice holsters on Ebay for reasonable prices and I found several half-flap, or "Speed Flap" there. Revolver holsters were not particularly desirable. Not so much any longer. N Frame with Deer Lodge Prison horsehair braided hat band and K frame with fringed buckskin gauntlets. Both holsters lined Lawrence.

I love it. I never heard of "flappers" until now. Learn something new--- thanks. The only "flapper" I have is for my 1911 Colt .45ACP. They are the US government issue type.

Default "Flapper" Holsters

Never heard that term before. The only "Flapper" holster I currently own is this old WWI US military version that currently houses a 3 inch barrel Colt New Service revolver.

Colt.

Just got this one in a 6 holster lot off ebay. My model 10 with 4" barrel
is peeking out. It's the only gun I have that I can snap the flap on, so it
must be a fit. I might as well keep it.

No name anywhere on the holster.

SJ,
There is definitely nothing shabby about that Bianchi holster or the model 66-2, for that matter.

What a nice thread. Hope I don't spoil anything by suggesting that there are no Eubanks holsters from the 1930s. Our research for the book Holstory turned up enough facts to show that Royal made gunleather in the 1940s especially for LEO during the war years, then sold to Pioneer in '49 and his company became Eubanks Pioneer for the 1950s, then started up Idaho Leather when his non-compete expired in '54 and died the following year.

Despite at least one site claiming Eubanks was founded in '30 nevertheless he was a salesman in radio (I expect selling advertising) in Washington where he remarries. In 1940 he is an auto upholsterer, a far cry from a gunleather maker. It's likely that serving the local LEO agencies kept him out of War service. In these ways it become important to sight the backside of 'his' holsters because they indicate when they were made; and a Eubanks Pioneer is not by Royal but by his successor; ditto Idaho Leather because he died so quickly after it formed:

Can’t thank Bruce enough for the half flap Lawrence. Class act and says a lot about the fine folks that hang out here.

Due to some logistical issues I just now was able to get my 357 Blackhawk comfy in its new digs. What a perfect fit!! Anyway thanks again Bruce!

Thanks Phil. And Red.

Below is the mark on the holster I listed.

Guess it's at least 10 years younger than I was told. Looks pretty similar to what Phil is saying about 1939 - 1949. I acquired, with some other items, that the original owner "got in the late 30s", at least that's the info I had.

So 2 questions if I may:

But why wouldn't that potentially be "in the 1930s" if it could have been produced in 1939?

And

If Eubanks is an auto upholsterer in 1940, why is that "a far cry " from a holster maker? Both would be working in leather presumably. Many holster makers get started while they're employed in "their main job ". Is it that Eubanks itself, and their markings, didn't begin till 1950?

Please advise.

After Bruce ignited my curiosity about the “half flap” design I went out and found another gorgeous Lawrence made for a 4” combat magnum. The detail is pretty incredible.

.357Magger - Vintage Gun Leather and Ben Wetzel both agree that Royal
Eubanks started his business in 1939. Ben Wetzel was the son of Bud
Wetzel, who bought Idaho Leather from Royal Eubank's widow. As Red
has said, we just name sources and let the reader decide. One thing I
know for sure is that sources can be wrong.

Thanks Phil.

Wasn't a deal breaker or hurt feelings either way.

It's a nice holster, still doing its job over 70 years later. It's definitely in better shape than I am.

After over 15 years of having Foto Time display my pictures, it appears that they have gone out of business as I cannot contact them and most of my pictures have disappeared from my posts on the forums. Any advice or help will be most appreciated.

I use the Tapatalk app and post right from the photo library in my iPhone. Incredibly simple if you have that option.

While this is just a cheap reproduction and the High Power is a more modern example, this duo represents, in my opinion, the best handgun/holster system of World War II. One tidy and very secure package, worn on the left side (normally), that could accessed by either hand and from a variety of positions (vehicle, etc.). It contained what I consider to be the best service pistol of the war, a spare magazine and 26 rounds of 9mm Parabellum (chrono tests after the war showed 124 grain 9mm German pistol loads exceeding 1200 fps from a P-38). The Nazis got about 350,000 BHPs out of FN in Belgium, a number only exceeded by the approximately 450,000 FN 1922s!

The detail that sets this particular "flapper" apart for me is the fact that the strap comes up from underneath (like the Webley holsters), and the triangular flap under the main flap, which aides in quick access.

This "system" represents a nice balance of the competing priorities that any user has to consider.

Who doesn't like a nice flapper hanging on their hip!

Being out of town I don't have access to the holster, but '85 I ordered a half-flap crossdraw for my 586 ND with 6" with Patridge front sight to use as a field holster while hunting with a rifle and using a slight butt forward can't. I regret no going the extra mile and getting either carved or basket weave. Being a southpaw there are limited choices- much to my aggrevation. Lawrence saved the day on this one tho'.

I’d like to add a couple of my favorite “flappers”to this thread. They are both Heisers and both very special. Bill

Beautiful Heisers Bill.
Here are a couple more.
Abercrombie & Fitch marked holster.

It took me a long time to find an example of that double loop model.

7 1/2” Colt New Service holster.

Regards,

I can't take nice pictures, but here's a couple of mine.
I just don't know how to rotate it.

Made for Ruger by Bianchi.. They made them in assorted barrel lengths for the single actions.

Here's a well worn Geo. Lawrence for a 6". It came with something stuffed in the toe, so I have always kept a 5" K in it.

That is a cool vintage Lawrence holster. I have an early Lawrence holster too, but mine has a different maker’s mark. I wonder which is the earlier mark, and when they changed it? A former owner of mine did some “bubba in the garage” lace work on it. The only reason I got it was because I didn’t have an early Lawrence holster with that maker’s mark or snap. The cool thing about the snap is that it is 4 quadrants with “G”, “L”, “C”, and “o” in them for the George Lawrence Company. Here is my clunker.

OP - Sorry for including this non flapper in your thread. I am old and confused!
Larry

Here’s another old Lawrence flap holster with an unusual snap, I’ve seen other Lawrence holsters with the same snap.
I would guess that Bruce’s Lawrence stamp is older than the football stamp.
