Default RenWax To Prevent Verdigris In Cartridge Loops ?

I have a Smith & Wesson brand cartridge belt and holster that I use for my "grab & go" Model 63 Kit Gun rig. I decided to have a look at the assorted .22 LR cartridges that are in the loops in case the dreaded verdigris had started to form. Sure enough, other than the 6 CCI Stingers with the Nickel plated cases, the other rounds were starting to get some green growth.

Has anyone tried applying Renaissance Wax to cartridges to prevent the verdigris growth or is it a losing battle other than to only use Nickel plated cartridges ?

You shouldn’t store guns or ammunition in leather, period. Wax does help short term and Ren wax is probably the best.

S&WChad is right, don't store cartridges or firearms in leather. Doing so will result in corrosion.

It may be a poor idea to get wax on brass you may want to chamber and shoot without wiping the wax off completely.

RenWax is great stuff, but a little marketing lie goes along with it.
On the can it says it's used by museums on fine antiques and antique leather.
Don't use it on antique leather.
I started collecting 19th century and prior leather bound books and tried some on a binding and it totally messed it up.
I use "Bickmore" non-darkening leather conditioner on my exotic leather cowboy boots, so I gave that a try.
Perfection.
I guess, don't believe everything you read? lol

Wax works ...a little , to some extent but it doesn't last very long .
What works better is a thin coat of spray on clear acrylic , enamel or lacquer ... Krylon Crystal Clear Glaze is but one , acrylic I think , but the idea is to seal the brass from moisture and the chemicals in the leather .
You have to be careful to apply a thin coat , or two , and not have it interfere with chambering or firing .
Spray Lacquer can achieve a thin coat ... be careful of acrylics and enamels ...these are thicker . You want to provide good coverage but not so much that it hinders functioning .

Thanks I decided that like many things in life, there is no easy solution. I will just keep an assortment of .22 ammo in one of those 50 count CCI plastic boxes and store it with the holster rig, and fill up the loops prior to taking a hike and empty them out afterwards.

For leather, I mainly use Montana Pitch Blend and have for many years. The pine pitch in it has anti microbial properties and keeps verdigris at bay, as does also the beeswax in it.

Keep in mind that anything put on the cases will inhibit their ability to cling to the chamber walls when they expand during firing. This increases thrust of the case heads on the recoil shield. In a .22 this won't amount to much, but in a magnum caliber may inhibit cylinder rotation, etc.

I wouldn't recommend using it on ammo, but I treat the leather around metals snaps and rivets that develop verdigris with Ballistol.

Leather preservation in the field is one of the designed uses of that product, and it has been preventing the formation of verdigris on my knife sheaths and gun rigs. Ballistol is alkaline and it neutralizes the tanning acids in leather that causes the verdigris to from.

It's also effective in killing and cleaning off the verdigris bloom that has already formed.

That's exactly what I do ... blue 50 round CCI Stinger box ...
Stingers don't have any trouble chambering in a S.A. Revolver !

I would suggest not using leather loops at all, but to carry your spare ammo in an MTM Case Gard ammo wallet, or something similar.

I strongly advise against spraying or otherwise placing anything on the exterior of any cartridges.

Stingers only belong in revolvers, or semi autos with a specific Stinger chamber. They don't adhere to SAAMI specs for the dimensions.

Ballistol. Every 3 months I wipe down the leather with a small amount.
It has worked great in my 22 mag belt.
44 and 357 holsters still look new. I spend alot of the time in rain on the tractor.
I always have one of the three on my hip
The 1911 holster a buddy gave me had the green goo goblin on all the snaps and rivets.
I soaked it for with spray ballistol for 4 nights.
Scrubbed with toothbrush every time.
You can barely tell how bad it was.

for brass Dillon case lube. Or make your own: 5% Lanolin into 95% Isopropanol.
