Does anyone carry traditional style holsters "on the shelf" these days? I realize that I can order high-quality, very expensive (and well worth it) holsters from places like EP Saddlery and others. I would like to be able to walk into a gun shop, like the days of old (60s and 70s), and find something other than nylon, hard plastic, molded, pancake, iwb, "tactical," "SOB", or otherwise "modern" gunleather.

I am talking about the stuff like I used to buy with brand names like Hunter, Bucheimer, Don Hume, and even some of the early Bianchi holsters. I like the basic Threepersons style, as well as older style "flap holsters" that protect the weapon in inclement weather, or when one is using tools or equipment that might come in contact with a handgun and scratch it.

I have mostly four-inch K-frames, but I do need holsters for three-inch and four-inch J-frames. I have my two-inch J-frames pretty well covered, so to speak.

This isn't really a "wanted to buy" post, just a request for information regarding companies that might carry traditional style holsters without a six-month waiting period and a $150.00 price tag. I see some of this leather for sale on the forum from time to time, but I am usually too late.

I really like the Galco DAO (Dual Action Outdoorsman) and Phoenix holsters for non-concealed carry. They work as strong side hip holsters or weak side cross-draw (two different cant angles). The difference is that the Phoenix is made just a little nicer and has a thumb break snap, and the DAO has a larger retention strap. There are times I wish they had a flap, but overall they work for me.

Bianchi makes a version of their nylon military holster for 4" revolvers, the UM84R, which does have a removable flap. The flap does not cover all of the grip. It can be worn several ways. I have one on a UM84H shoulder harness which I'm planning to convert to a double shoulder rig for a 617 and 686 combination.

There are also copies of the old military leather flap holster out there - Cabelas sells one made by Pacific Canvas and Leather. Not too impressive in quality but they work.

Hunter is still in business but not as widely found as in the old days. When I was a kid the local discount store carried their whole line.

Nearly all of the Galco and Bianchi products are available on-the-rack. I have a Galco Fletch for my 1911 and a Bianchi Cyclone for my N-frames.

Cheaper Than (very expensive) Dirt carries some of the El Paso stuff in stock.

Other than that, be prepared to wait - quality leather generally comes from small custom shops, and since they're quality, they're backlogged.

Red,

There are places north and south of you that carry an extensive line of the newest Galco and El Paso Saddlery if you don't mind driving...

Email sent.

Look up LOBO Gunleather on this forum. Custom but excellent work at a VERY reasonable price, about 1/3rd of what you mentioned, and delivered in less than two weeks. Also Simply Rugged. Both are contributes on this forum.

I use Idaho Leather of Boise, Idaho. Around sixty bucks, hand made and only takes a couple weeks. They have a web site.

Yeah, but I'm bad not to check it very often. I just replied. And I remembered after I sent the reply, you're at Blairsville and not Dillard. I guess I had that good food at the Dillard House on my mind.

Anyhow, thanks for the tips and the help.
