I have a Colt SAA and I'd like a quality holster for it. The traditional Mexican loop holsters aren't really what I want since they seem to be built with more leather than is necessary.

The #44 holster from EPS seems nice and I like the style but I'm concerened that it may not keep the gun held tight if I were hiking or doing other outdoor activities since the side doesn't cover up to the hammer.

Any opinions?

I have one, made up for a 4 5/8ths ruger vaquero. The thong latches over the hammer and adds some security. I would be confortable on foot with it. However, I would not feel too comfortable climbing or riding withnout checking it often.

Pick up the new copy of American Handgunner, it has a article in it about a John Wayne holster in it, it is a new production, I don't have it here it is at work or I would be able to tell you more.

This one is in the classifieds. Fairly inexpensive way to find out.

I've had a Duke set with both a strong side and a cross draw from El Paso Saddlery that I've used for cowboy action shooting for several years. I've never had any problem's running,jumping or climing up on our rocking horse. The only thing that I can say negetive about El Paso Saddlery was they just take a bitt longer to deliver. But they do have a quality product!!!

I have a El Paso "Duke" rig with two holsters and the roughout belt. It took a good while to get them but the work is top notch. I got them for CAS also. They carry the guns fairly securely but I wouldn't want to engage in lots of rigorous activity with them. For camping, hunting, hiking perhaps a good crossdraw flap holster? El Paso makes some good holsters of that type. The belt is soft enough not to cut into the flesh but stiff enough to support the holstered guns.
