Cool {FS} Dual Action Top Break Antique .32 5 Shot Revolver Nickle 1890's ---

This S&W gun is being sold needing work.

This is an antique gun, and by what I learned on GUNBROKER any gun made before 1898 can be shipped person to person , and doesnt need a FFL middleman.

The Serial number for this gun is : 91,XXX

I was told on this site that this model of guns starts in 1883 to 1901 with numbers 43406 to 282999. I am estimating it to be 1886 or 1887, but I am NOT SURE.

Its in great shape for the age. I am thinking its nickle plated, just highly polished. All of the stamping is still very deep. There are scratches and blemishes on the finish, but nothing major that I can see. Looks to be the original grips, I dont think this gun was used much.

Here is what the gun is doing, and will need to be fixed:

It will cock and shoot 1 shot, then each time I press the trigger it just spins the barrel (doesnt engage the hammer )....then I open it, close it...and it will shoot 1 shot, and spin again. I emailed S&W with a recommendation to use a well known "cowboy gun guy" to get it fixed.

Someone on THIS forum told me it will need a cylinder stop OR a stop spring. If the parts cant be found, they can be fabricated by a gunsmith.

I have seen BLUED versions of this gun on GUNBROKER for $700+.

I will take specific pics if you contact me by PM ... contact me by PM for purchase also please.

I would like $350 SHIPPED by UPS with $100 insurance, tracking, and signature confirmation (more insurance is $2.50 per $100) , thanks ---

Default Re-nickeled

The trigger and guard should be blue. If they are not then it is has been re-plated.
The serial numbers should match. There should be one on the bottom back strap portion of the grip, on the cylinder (by the extractor) and on the t-bar lock. You will probably need a magnifying glass as the stamping is very small. If you really feel adventurous you may remove your grips and check the number there also.
What state are you in?

Thanks for the info

All three of the numbers match ... so thats good news.

What is the guard ... the area around the trigger?

The trigger, hammer, and the t-bar are all different than the rest of the gun (not polished).

What do you think its worth before I throw it on gunbroker?

Do you think its nickle , chromed, or polished stainless?

I just dont know how they could have chromed it, and kept the stamping on the top of the barrel so crisp and easy to read.

I appreciate your help ---

Default Top break

Sorry...only probably $100-$140.
EXC=575, VG=300, G=200, F=125, Poor=60 (non working old guns are usually rated as poor as parts are hard to find)
It looks nice but, I would probably use it as a parts gun. You might be able to part it out for more than it's worth whole.
I have one in similar condition that I am going to use for parts. I own several different top breaks and sometimes trade parts with others in need.
Yes it is nickel finish and has been buffed to a bright finish. It appears to have been re-nickeled. If you look at the sideplate and barrel retention screws, you will see that the screwheads appear to be partially filled with the new finish.
The trigger guard is indeed the thing around around the trigger.
The firearm is a S&W .32 Double Action 4th Model
Your serial number puts you at 1888-1889. Approx 239,600 were produced.
If you decide to sell....count me in! Maybe I can take mine, in original condition, and create a Frankenstein.
Good Luck........Brian S
