I have a 1972 Nickel Official Police MK III with 5" barrel, .38 special. This is a Detroit Police revolver. Overall condition is very good. It has some very light clouding of the nickel which doesn't show up in the pictures. Grips are very good with only light handling marks. No dents dings or other obvious damage in frame or barrel. I have this gun posted on the Colt forum as well. I have not shot this gun but has been in my safe for about a year. Locks up tight and has nice trigger. I am asking 550 plus shipping. My FFL to your FFL. I am looking for a 586/686, so a trade is also possible.

Question: Does it come with any documentation that it was with DPD?

Documentation might be difficult. It is a well known fact that Detroit PD had ordered 5" S&W M-10's in nickel. Don't know hard it is to get factory letters for Colt's...The photo below shows a Detroit Sgts older 5" nickel Colt

None other than the "Detroit Police" stamp on the backstrap and a equipment number (17657) stamped on the bottom of the grip. Picture 2 and picture 4 show the "Detroit Police" stamp. It was purchased just as you see it , no box and no paperwork. SN is 5857J putting production at 1972. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for adding the picture. As you can see from your photo there is a equipment number on the bottom of the grip. Hmmm... wonder if its 17657. You can order a letter from Colt but it is rather expensive to do so. It is the only way to authenicate a Colt. But as you say its a known fact that Detroit ordered both these 5" Colts and Model 10s in Nickel and they all were stamped in this way.

I have a very clean 686-1 with box that has been machined for moon clips.
Pm me with what you will be willing to offer for this gun in trade. The 686 is valued higher than the Colt.

That 686 has a lot going for it, but I don't like the moon clips. I will pass, but thanks for making the offer.
