WITHDRAWN - A Man and His Gun - The 1956 S&W Chief Special Retiree Gun with Badge
Officer Earl W. Crane was an original member of The California Highway Patrol, which was founded way back in 1929! He retired in 1957. This 1956 Chief Special and Badge was his retiree gift!
What we have here was his badge, along with his absolutely gorgeous, 58 year old, .38 Spl, Smith & Wesson Chief Special Revolver, engraved with the Captain, the Sergeants and other officers' names that were in his department!
This is from the early, pre Model 36 era. In 1957, the Chief Special became named the Model 36. This was from the year before it was called a Model 36. It's just called a "Chief Special". It has the pinned barrel, with the highly sought after round butt, and even has the original serial matching grips it came with in 1956!
It comes with the Smith & Wesson box which has no label on it.
This absolutely beautiful gun and badge are currently on display for sale (with very specific instructions that the gun not be handled) inside my local gun store for "$2900.00, or close reasonable offer". If it sells there, I will have to cancel the ad here.
This gun is mechanically absolutely perfect, and as you can see, spotlessly clean inside and out. Although it appears to have been carried by Officer Crane, the lock up is every bit as tight as it probably was when bought new in 1956, and the timing is dead center on all 5 cylinders. It opens and closes just as tight as it did when it was brand new. It has no cylinder play at all. The hammer still has it's very sharp-to-the-thumb edges. If it was fired, it sure wasn't much!
The grips have fantastic grain and best of all, they are serial-numbered to the gun,..so these are the exact grips that came on the gun when purchased brand new in 1956! They look every bit as nice in person as they do in the photos. If you want more pictures, just send me a PM and I will email them to you.
This is a true, all original gun, having all original and matching serial numbers, original serial numbered grips, bought brand new back in 1956!
It is being sold as-as, ONLY because I am not having this gun tampered with and returned. You will not be disappointed!
