My guy told me he was sending extra $ to cover unexpected costs, and even though I explicitly told him I would accept only the exact sale price, he mailed me the inflated "check" anyway.
The even bigger tell was that he never even pretended to provide me his FFL info. I had another (real) buyer lined up even before I received his "check".
Good thing most crooks are stupid.

Essentially the same deal as me with the Model 520. It originated on Guns America. I reported it to everybody and never heard a thing. I have no idea of the disposition of the case, or if there even was one.
Adios.

Scammer
Well I have some good news. I was able to get the USPS to intercept the certified letter and it is to be returned to my PO Box tomorrow. Cost a few dollars, but well worth it.
I'll follow up when my check is in my hands.
Once again, thank you so very much Handejector for the alert.

How to NOT get Scammed
After a decade on the forum, I've learned the best way to hide something is to put it in a sticky!

I contacted one of the moderators. They messaged me on here we texted and emailed back and forth. It was a Nigerian scamming the person I sent the money to. So the PD didn't touch it. Never heard anything from the USPS or mail fraud either.

This guy went so far as to email the local gun store and inquired as to how much it costs to ship a pistol. He contacted me with an email and so when I checked his user name and number of posts and likes etc he had me.

I recently bought a pistol from a person on here. He sent me pictures, I asked for another specific picture, which he sent me and then he took it to his FFL. I called the FFL, they boxed it up and the selling owner left. I sent the funds and the dealer sent the gun. Worked great. Now have a Nickel 6" 57 in a Presentation Case.

I was frauded several years ago by a gal that worked for FedEx in Tennessee. I submitted an $800 claim..not a thing happened. People at my local Post Office looked at me like I was speaking Swahili. Thought about going further up the ladder but I gave up. Almost went to Tennessee to visit a fraternity brother and also drop in on her. It was my first and last purchase off Armslist.

SCAMMER
Well one more update. The USPS operates in mysterious ways. Perhaps that is partially why they operate at a loss.
My intercept request for my check/letter is filed, alive and well. After numerous conversations with USPS officials I have learned that the letter must reach the final destination before it can be turned around and sent back.
It will reach Elgin, Illinois tomorrow and then hopefully begin its return trip to me.
More to follow.

That’s how an intercept works . There’s millions and millions letters going through the system every day .Actually over 500 million per day . There’s no way to know where yours is in the system until it arrives at the office that it is zip coded to.

I guess, but it has been scanned numerous times along its journey. As it is told to me every time it is scanned the intercept alert is shown. I'm getting text message updates every time it is scanned. Seems like it could just be turned around earlier.
As long as it works as advertised, I'll be very happy.

As I understand it though, scanning often doesn't say where the item is, more than where it was when the scan was taken. When you consider the number of items USPS handles vs the number of things they screw up, the percentages of issues are really very small. Have faith!

The Post Office won't do anything to help. It's a misdemeanor if it's less than $1000. Lost $500 5 or 6 months ago after winning a bid on GUNAUCTION.com. I contacted the USPS, FBI, police dept in the city of the scammer, and local police dept. All told me that I was out of luck.
