***SOLD***S&W 640 (engineering change 640-2) 2 1/8”, 5-shot, double-action only, stainless steel, .38spl revolver in Excellent Condition. This gun is a little different in that the great majority of 640s built on this frame and with the full underlug were commercial guns chambered in .357 Mag that sported a brushed stainless finish. This one is chambered in .38 Special, has a a matte stainless finish, and was manufactured during the same time period as the NYPD special orders from the late 1990’s (the NYPD did not authorize the use of .357Mag and ordered a special run made in .38Spl just for them). From the research I’ve done, the 640-2 NYPD guns were not stamped any differently, other than on the box, which this one did not come with years ago when I bought it used. This is a somewhat rare 640 variation in fine condition. The correct factory grips would’ve been Uncle Mike’s Boot grip (also called Butler Creek), but it arrived to me wearing the wooden grips pictured (I believe they’re Eagle grips and there’s a small crack on the underside from someone having overtightened them). The front sight has been painted red, but I’m sure it would easily come off with some solvent. NOTE, to Maryland buyers, I just checked the current roster, and it did not specifically list a 640-2, however, I bought it after the genius creation that is the roster, and it was approved. The “-2” refers to engineering changes made by S&W to the original design. S&W does not advertise the models using the “dash numbers,” they are simply called, in this case, a “Model 640,” and even the 640 Pro models have a 640-3 stamped on them. Currently on the roster, there is a 640, 640-1, and 640 Pro (which should read 640-3 if the state police’s logic used for listing a 640-1 had been followed).
