This is an A.H. Fox SPE. Introduced in 1932, SPs (SPecials) were designed streamlined versions of regular Fox shotguns. The SP was a more economical style of gun to produce, flat sided receiver, blackened rather than case colored. The SP was an attempt to show some English styling in an American gun with a different stock style. While they look a lot like a Winchester M21 on the outside, their mechanics are the same as every other Fox shotgun. Internally identical to the Sterlingworth and graded Foxes.
Fox SPs came in two models: standards and the Skeet & Upland Game Gun, which had a straight grip, a beavertail forend, and a bit of scroll engraving on the action. Both models came with or without ejectors (SPE or SP).
According to McIntosh there were 146 SP/SPE’s produced in 20 gauge. Of the total of 146 SP grades produced, about 80 had ejectors.
