White Star by James Thayer Review
Haven't done a book review in 35-40 years, too lazy to research how to do it right so here goes anyway:
This book is a novel based
extremely loosely on Carlos Hathcock. In fact the only thing the main character of the book and Mr. Hathcock have in common is the guy in the book was the big Vietnam sniper, was a legend and had a military sniper school named after him (I think Mr. Hathcock has a school named after him, I might be wrong).
That being said, the book is about Owen Gray, the afore mentioned main character of the book and a Russian opponent. Gray is now an assistant district attorney in NYC. A sniper starts killing people around Gray eventually and reluctantly drawing him back into his former life. The Russian seems to have a score to settle and wants the situation like it was many years ago. Gray figures out the Russian wants him mano-e-mano and eventually decides to accommodate his wishes. The author does like to mention lots of different kinds of foliage when the story moves away from NYC which I found kinda interesting.
This is really a synopsis of the back of the book (except the foliage part) but anymore details would spoil it for potential readers. And hey, remember, it's a novel.
The book was a pleasant read for me, actually a page turner. Can't speak to authenticity or anything like that, but I really enjoyed it so much so that I have ordered another book by Thayer.
I recommend this book for what it is, a good read with excitement and a local that is easily visualized.
