Default Machine guns anyone?

I have met a lot of different people since I have joined this forum and most seem to have an appreciation for all kinds of guns, I was just curious if anyone owns any transferable machine guns or suppressors? I bought my first transferable M-16 about 6 years ago and fired it quite a bit the first year, but since then it has been cleaned and put up in the safe. I also have 2 suppressors that have been a blast to own, perfect for plinking on a Sunday afternoon! The funny thing is my wife doesn't even know I have a MG, if she did I'm sure it would of been sold a long time ago...ha ha.

I've never owned a machine gun, but I'm endlessly fascinated by them. I'm currently reading Chinn's five volume set, "The Machine Gun". I read "Small Arms Review" religiously. I shot a few when I was in the Army.

I'll never own one because I refuse to deal with the BATFE and with the ban on new civilian guns, the prices are insane.

Machine guns are fun, but to be perfectly honest the coolest thing about having a machine gun is being able to chime in on your buddies conversation about full auto weapons and say, "yea, I got one"....ha. As I get older I don't even do that anymore, its not worth the 20 questions that usually follow...such as, "aren't those things illegal"? "Don't you have to have a class 3 to own them"? "can you help me convert mine to full auto"?.....I guess my M-16 is more of an investment these days than anything else. I did have an older gentleman over to my house once who was chronicly ill with cancer and not expected to live too much longer and ironicly he mentioned that one thing he had never done was shot a full auto gun and that he doubted he would get that opportunity.....He had no idea I owned one and I made that old man's wish come true, he died a few months later. Sofar to date, thats my fondest memory of the MG next to the day when I was able to take it home after the 9 month wait.

While I do not own any class 3 guns, I have had and continue to have the opportunity to handle and shoot a large variety thru the friendship with a class 3 dealer/mfg. Once you have shot them, the "thrill" of firing MG's is somewhat lost and if I could {I can't because of living in IL.} I would be most interested in owning the Classics , Thompson,BAR, etc. Like my interest in S&W's, the old ones interest me more than the new.

Hi:
In another era I owned a German MP38 9mm, a US M-2 Carbine .30cal, and a US M-3 .45acp. I shot all three a great deal with military surplus ammo. Fast forward to the present era and I have an issue Colt M-16 .223 which I let the young Officers use more than me.
I would like to have a Browning M1918 Water-Cooled .30 and a Lewis Gun .30. A Thompson M1928 .45acp and a US BAR .30 would be nice also.

I don't own any because of all of the paperwork hassle. I don't really need one tho because I still get to shoot plenty of them in the National Guard.

I got in class 3's back in 2001. my first which I still have is a Ingram MAC 10 in 45 acp with a supressor. I have also had and sold an UZI, and a Costa Mesa Armalite AR 18 which was in competion with the M16 back in the 60's. All have been fun to shoot, But I get a kick out of watching someone who has never shot a full auto take a turn at pulling the trigger. To see the smile on their faces is awesome!

I've got a few. I seem to gravitate to the extremes: subguns, belt feeds and my favorites, the DD's. No automatic rifles at this time.

My avatar is real. 25mm Puteaux anti-tank gun. Live and fully functional. I even reload for it!

I mostly shoot them at large format, weekend events like The Big Sandy, RMFCSA at Cheyenne Wells and Knob Creek.

I've got a mess of them, from a select fire 10/22 to a 75mm pack howitzer and everything in between.

You deal with the ATF everytime you fill out a 4473 to purchase a Title I firearm.

There's a lot of misconception regarding Title II goodies. If you form a Trust, there is hardly any paperwork. You fill out a Form 4 and send in the $200 and wait. About four months right now. You can make your own short barrel rifle or shotgun too. Just fill out a Form 1 and send in your money.

I now own a full auto MP5 PDW, M16A2, Uzi, Thompson, two Mac-10s and a Ma Deuce. I've got three short barrel rifles, a short barrel shotgun and a few Destructive Devices.

The first gun shop I worked at was a class 3 dealer. That was in the pre-85 days when you could buy dealer samples cheap. My favorite was a M1-A Thompson. Heck at that time the gun was cheaper than the tax stamp ($150 for the gun). I will say after a couple thousand rounds the magic does kinda die.
On the other hand I love suppressors and plan on adding a few in the next few months.

I will say I do have a F/A fire control group for my M-4 just in case.

Yeah, with a trust you don't have to get local LEO sign off for a class III. There are other benefits, but I can't recall them at this time.

You don't have to talk to them when you fill out a 4473, and I've filled out precious few of them. Most of my guns have been purchased in private transactions.

I enjoy shooting full auto stuff but unfortunately it is much cheaper to rent than buy. I attend the occasional full auto shoot and you can rent them down at my local gun shop to shoot on the range.

A few years ago a buddy was selling an MP5SD for a very fair price. I really wanted it but even if I sold every gun I owned at the time it wasn't enough to put half down.

When my best friend and I were at IOBC in '80, we were thinking about getting MAC10s. Back then they were less than the price of the transfer tax, something like $90 versus $200.

It's just as well I didn't. It would have been a nightmare when I moved back to Chicago to go to law school.

I had an AR15 that I had converted to full auto back in the early 80's, but I sold it and really regret doing so. I do have two suppressors, both for .22 caliber. One was done on the Form 4 with LEO signature & fingerprints, and the 2nd one was done on a trust, so no signature or fingerprints were required. I bought and used Quicken Willmaker to form my trust and had no problem whatsoever, except for the 4 month wait. One is a GemTech Outback II and the other is a Tactical Innovations Quest.

Four years in the Marines did the same thing with me. I learned that semi-auto can do more, cheaper, with better accuracy. I'd prefer semi auto variants of the classics than full any day of the week.

No argument when it comes to accurate, aimed fire. That said, there is just something *wrong* about a semi-auto belt gun.

I'm lucky enough to have a couple of friends who own them. I do get a chance to play with them from time to time. They are a hoot!
Realistically, I don't want one of my own. Way above my pay grade. Even if I could afford the weapon, I couldn't afford to feed it.

Thanks for asking. Here's a few more I like.

Gun weights about 600 pounds and is easily moved by myself. When set in firing position a monopod is deployed that lifts the wheels off the ground so that the mount becomes effectively a tripod. Gun is extremely accurate out to over 1000 yards. Will penetrate up to 2 inches of armor at 300 yards. Was one of the highest velocity cannons of WWII. Factory ammo steps out at around 3200fps much faster than contemporary 37mm guns. We make our own bullets from solid brass bar stock. Last picture shows a few examples. Bullet on the far left factory original. The red thing in the base of one round is a .50 caliber BMG tracer bullet being used as a tracer pellet. Will trace bright red for over one mile. Fun to shoot and watch the bullet trajectory to target.

You don't have to talk to them for Title II stuff either.

As for the trust route, it's fairly simple. There has been some problems with the Quicken trusts being kicked back. My trust was set up specifically for NFA. Cost me $300 thru an attorney that knew what he was doing. None of my trusts have been kicked back.

The good thing about the trust, versus a corporation or CLEO sign off, is that you don't pay any fees/taxes to have it renewed every year like a corp. and the only folks who know you have it is the BATFE and yourself.

While I do not personally own any machinegun, I do have free access to an assortment of machineguns. One of my favorites is a Beretta Model 38/42. It functions flawlessly with any 9mm ammunition it can fire in it, plus the magazine is easy to load. Another favorite is a Heckler & Koch HK33. I much prefer it to the M16. I know it is just psychological, but the HK33 just seems more powerful than the M16.

The M14 is a great military rifle in semi-auto, but I just can't control it in full auto. I have always wanted to experiment with converting some machineguns to use different cartridges. For example, I'd like to try an FN FAL in 7mm-08 and in 243. At one time I thought about making a wildcat cartridge from a 7.62x39 by necking it down to 6mm, and then rebarreling an AK47 to use that cartridge. I thought that would be a better cartridge than the 5.45x39 Russian cartridge, and the Soviet Union could rebarrel all their AK47's for the new cartridge which would be cheaper and more efficient than manufacturing the new AK74's. An Army Colonel forcibly reminded me that the pay check for my job came from the United States Government, and my job was not to design better weapons for the Soviet Union.

was in class 3 business during the early to mid 80's. there used to be whole page ads in shorgun news with dealer sample guns from the world over. walther mpl&mpk, madsens, swedish k, m1a1 thompsons, mg-17, you name it and it was for sale. along with parts, cheap magazines, and ammo, which was relatively high priced at the time. all these could be bought by any class 3 dealer. life was good. then in 86 the feds stepped in and made life miserable so i got out. shot tens of thousands of rounds through them and still miss being able to go the range and rip off a bunch of rounds. best stress reliever i ever found. btw, back then my car gun was a mac-10 in 9mm with suppressor and 10 mags.

I own three Mp5's and three M16's. Best gun investments I ever made. I very rarely ever shoot any of them but every once and a while I rent a helicopter and go shoot hogs and coyotes down at the ranch. It's the most fun you can have with your pants on. I have five or so suppressors and use them on occasion.

Sir, I did a fair bit of full-auto shooting in the Marine Corps. It's good clean fun, but darned expensive if you're footing your own bills. Cheap as I am, there's just no way I could do it now. I'd fire one short burst, then spend the next 10 minutes hunting around in the weeds trying to find every last cartridge case and link. :-/

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Once upon a time owned a full-size Uzi and a Sten but sold them around 2000-2001.

Presently I have two select-fire weapons: a U-prefix S&W 76 and a Sterling Mk4 built on a DLO Sterling tube by John and Stan Andrewski.

I also have two SBRs that I assembled, a semi-auto Norinco 320 Uzi clone with a 10.2" MG barrel and a semi-auto AR15 with a 10.5" barrel.

Can someone explain how it is possible and LEGAL to own a canon or howitzer?

Thanks
Just like owning any other Title II piece, be it a machine gun, suppressor, short barreled rifle, short barreled shotgun or an AOW, however, a cannon is considered a Destructive Device.

A Sten, and a MAC-10 in 45 for me. I am planning on acquiring a S&W M76 soon. No S&W collection is complete without one. Of course not many of us have complete Smith collections anyway, so there must be another excuse. Maybe I just like 'em.

I do not have any suppressors at this time. I live out in the country and noisy guns discourage people from moving in too close.

I do have some SBS's though.

Paperwork isn't that big a hassle and you don't have to deal with ATF. you just fill out the paperwork, send in two passport size photos of yourself along with a check and settle back and wait a long time. Sometimes even the wait isn't all that long.

I am an 01 FFL also. That is where you get into dealing with the ATF. By comparison owning NFA items isn't anything. FWIW if you ever do need to talk to someone at the NFA branch of ATF you will find them nicer and more helpful than most of the other ATF people. At least that has been my experience. I have called more than once to ask about the status of a form 1 or 4. Their site even lists the names of the people who work there. They are actually helpful. Imagine that from a gov't bureaucrat!!

Suppressors are fun too. I've got them in .22, .223, .308, 9mm, .45, 6.8 and .50 BMG. You can get an AOW like this Serbu http://www.impactguns.com/store/SER-SS12.html and the tax stamp is only $5.
