onebadscrambler - THAT was information I didn't have. Your Yorkie actually performed the "I'm not a threat" behavior, a totally submissive approach that goes all the way back to wolf packs. Your Yorkie was very well socialized to other animals and it knew what it was doing, and I have little explanation for what the pit bull did.

Thank you for clarifying that your Yorkie, rest his little doggie soul, did NOT suffer from Napoleonic syndrome.

She is one of the best dogs we have bred, with the type of presence that makes folks sit up and take notice. Consiquently, her photo from our website is one of the most often used on the web as an example of the breed.

Chaos is an Italian Mastiff, known as a Cane Corso Italiano. I found our photo being used on this forum/thread, so thought I'd drop in to say Hi and share a bit more information about the breed.

We welcome you to browse our ever-growing website ( About Time Cane Corso ) to learn more about our dogs and the Cane Corso breed. You will find we have taken the time to provide a wealth of photos, information, and resources to help you better get to know and learn about these amazing dogs.

Hi D.G., and thanks for the welcome and the compliments!
I have heard so many comments about that photo of Chaos, everything from evil, wow, what it is, to she looks like a panther. She really is an awesome dog - and for as intense as she looks in that picture, she is a sweetheart that loves to hang out with us, and be a pillow for my 18 month old daughter to fall asleep on.

You are right that it is the people that make the dogs. A breeder who breeds carefully with a stable temperament in mind, and an owner that raises and socialized the dog properly. Sadly enough, most 'bad dogs' are nothing more than unlucky enough to have ended up with bad owners.

Here's a couple more photos of our dogs being their usual loveable selves.

My only run in with a pitbull was when man almost let his loose on me when I did security work in the Myrtle Beach area.

After a few verbal commands (and a 4506 aimed at the dogs face), he decided to put the dog up so I could take care of work.

I just tried to make a post and obviously used some words I wasn't supposed to use. Basically what I tried to say was that I heard on the news this morning that in my state (Miss.) two pit bulls recently ate through the diaper of a two month old boy and that surgeons were unable to save his reproductive organs. The child will be placed somewhere while the mother and baby daddy are being investigated. These are beautiful animals but I've seen too much to want them and several other breeds around my granddaughters.

Charlie,No doubt inbred like some from the trailer park you write about so often.I understand that you have been bitten lately but all of the local police know my dogs and love them.Smart move on my part wouldn't you think?BTW I have a Giant Schnauzer and he is a great dog on either side of the fence. But I'm not saying one should help himself to the yard W/O anouncement. That's what the sign is for.

Default I hate em!

My first experience with a pitbull was almost 40 years ago. A neighbors pit attacked and killed our family dog. A long haired dachsund for pete sake! I picked this dog out of a litter and brought it home. I named it. Loved it. And took care of it. I still have the image in my head after looking down at my dead little dog. He never had a chance. Only gratification I got was when my dad brought his Ruger Blackhawk 44 and shot the pit in the head. Since that day I hated every single one I saw.

Since then I have had many, too many dealings with them both at work and at home. They chased me, my wife. and our daughter. I have seen them attack at random and unproked. Like a switch was turned on and they suddenly turned mean.

I have had to draw my gun on two occasions. And yes because of pitbulls.

I will never like them. Trust them or turn my back on them. Most useless breed of dog there is.

Had a coworker that owned a pit. He say's the dog is nice and won't bite. But everytime anyone went to the guys house, it was all he could do to keep the dog from attacking.

Almost, not all but most of the people that I see with pits own them because they think it's cool or make them look tough. Kind of a status thing I guess.

Now before you pit lovers get upset remember this my opinion and my experience with them. I understand that any dog can go bad. I personally think that the pit is more likely to do so.

I stay away from them if possible, I find them intimidating animals and usually the owners -at least over here- are lowlife trash.
These dogs make the news on a regular basis for unprovoked attacks mostly on children, most of the time the owners claim "It won't bite" and then "I dunno - it never did this before .."
Here in Germany, Government tries to control the situation with extremely high dog taxes for these so called dangerous dogs. These dogs need to wear a muzzle and leash when in public, but still they make the news on a regular basis.

Like any other dog or child for that matter if they are raised properly they usually act properly. Let them run around like wild animals with no repercussions they grow up to be wild animals.

Three pit bull stories. My daughter is a personal liability attorney and recently has started taking some pit bull bite cases pro bono ( hope that term doesn't elicit anxiety attacks from attorneys here ). She is doing it because it bothers her that in most of the cases she has seen the dog owners don't have insurance and basically don't give a rip if their dogs hurt innocent folks. She is going after garnishing their wages if they have any findable income. The second story is from my defensive carbine teacher who is often the point man and is the first through the door with the SWAT team for a big city PD. He said that he has had to shoot a number of pit bulls that charged him as he is making entry. The ones that get his heart pumping are the dogs that skid to a stop at his feet after absorbing multiple .223 rounds. And finally, last week our local PD had to shoot a pit bull after making entry to a meth house. I was amazed to read the comments on our local newspaper web site criticizing the police for shooting the dog even though the dog had already bit one cop in the hand before a second officer was able to shoot the dog.

Of the 10 or so purebred fighting terriers I've known well over the years, all but one were wonderful with people. The one misfit belonged to a human of the same caliber.

However, none of them could be trusted with dogs they did not know, which has always stopped me from getting one.

I live close to Gary, In. where the bangers fight PB's all the time. On occasion they break into the Gary dog shelter and steal dogs to train their dogs with live "prey". When they're thru with their PB's the turn them loose in a large swamp that occupies about 15% of Gary. Those wacked out dogs occasionally find their way to my neighborhood (along with similar PB's from Chicago's nearby south side) There's no way I feel comfortable walking my 2 small dogs in my neighborhood. I know several people that own them. One good friend added a third PB to his pair bought from a reputable breeder. These dogs were bred to average 70 lbs. at adulthood. At age 11 months the third dog turned on my buddy Fred in his back yard. Fred weighs 310 at 6'3". Fred punched the dog in the head and ended his attack after a few more bites and blows were exchanged. The dog was put down the next day. A call to his breeder revealed about 20% of his dogs turned into "biters" no matter how they were brought up.

Great dogs, proud owner.

As for the attack stories that make the news (and thus forums, etc.), the crowd on a forum like this may want to consider that it's often the case that the attacking dog is called a "pit bull" when in fact it is not. This is similar to how nearly every gun involved in a crime out there is an "automatic weapon", "assault rifle" or "AK-47" (see image below) when it comes to the 11 PM.

An interesting test for those who believe everyone knows, visually, what a pit bull is: Spot the Pit Bull

Someone could make an image like this for pit bulls and it would ring just as true:

As a couple other members already pointed out, pit bulls are simply the "bad dogs" right now, a label affixed to them as largely the result of an uninformed media. Those of us old enough remember that before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, and before them Dobermans, that were the "evil" "dangerous" dogs. Even the German Shepherd got a bad rap for awhile. These whimsical uninformed sensationalist stories, attitudes and opinions must obviously be viewed objectively and taken with a grain of salt.

I have 2 Chihuahuas. They alert me to any intruders. Giving me the opportunity to practice my shooting skills. Guard dogs belong in junk yards.

We use chihuahuas in our junk yards in LA since they are the only bilingual dogs around...

I've read there's a lot of homeless Chi's in California because of movie Chi popularity. Do you really have a Chihuahua?

No...they're cute and all but my favorite small dog is the Dachshund...they are compact but have big dog personalities...I plan to get one when we move to a house...and you right about the homeless Chi's...add them to the list of other movie dogs that morons buy based on seeing a film...once they realize the dog doesn't actually talk or needs to be walked, they dump them...same thing with 101 Dalmatians and other canine driven movies.

I like the mini Doxies. There's a couple that walks their pair of mini Doxie long hairs in the park by me. They run and play with hair floppin in the breeze (the dogs). Fun to watch. I like small dogs. SDMSC

The child will be placed somewhere while the mother and baby daddy are being investigated. These are beautiful animals but I've seen too much to want them and several other breeds around my granddaughters.
I was having a conversation about this a day or so ago.
The mother left the baby in a carrier alone with the dogs.
I have seen kids get bit in the face, on hands and feet.
Never in the crotch.
I have also seen a LOT of dogs go after dirty diapers in hampers or in trash bags.
What I would guess happened, is that the mother left the baby alone with the dogs... wearing a dirty diaper.
And the dogs just did what dogs do.
Tragic, but totally understandable from an "animals doing what animals do" standpoint.

I have owned dogs all my life and yes; I’m getting up there! As for aggression and dogs, they are all capable of biting. Heck, my little no-nothing pound mutt has bit me, and others over the years, but nothing serious. Still, if my 22-pound dog (Boots) bites someone, it could ruffle the feathers of a parent or neighbor. However, if that tiny little nick of the skin is from a ‘pit’ then here comes the sheriff, animal control, and helicopter with sharpshooter. As we all know ‘perception trumps facts every time’.

Here's Joe again, policing the back yard. I do pity anyone who Joe has not met through us, and who he does not accept back there...

Smile I love your pitbull

I love your pit. I also love the black cane corso. I have a pitbull and just got a cane corso. I did not want to pay the money that about time was charging but i found a good pup. I hope he looks like the black one. The bloodlines are from good breeders. My pup should look like the father Here is the father.

I like Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I hope to get my puppy this year

We haven't had a pit bull kill anybody here in NM since Dec.
Sorry, can't interview the owner. She was the deceased.
Her son came home and found her body. Then the dog was also deceased.

Default ppp pit bull scoob!

pit bulls scare me . i might be able to hold my own against a shepard or a doberman but i know a pit bull would take me apart. its the way they are built.
i was once kept from getting into my car, because a pitbull was in the truck parked next to mine .growling and slavering over the side of the truck box. i had to get in passenger side, i waited for owner to show up so i could complain. he just laughed at me...might have whupped him right there.. but there was this dog...
another time, another dog: i had my akbash dog at work with me ,he was a big lovable dog ,loved everyone except the mail man.
well im walking by another crew with my big happy dog/horse and some goof calls out: "my dog would kick your dogs ***!"
this was entirely unprovoked ! i looked at him and his pit and said loudly for all to hear," sure,we'll fight as a team, me and chevy ,against you and your dog." that was 20 years ago and i still smile remembering his facial expression ,he looked like id already punched him in the stomach and no i wouldnt have let chevy fight the pit, but i would have happily pummeled the mouth piece

I took this picture of my wife being attacked by a large(130#) Mastiff/pittbull mix, thank goodness she had a snowball to hold him off with while I shot him with a camera!

An interesting test for those who believe everyone knows, visually, what a
[As a couple other members already pointed out, pit bulls are simply the "bad dogs" right now, a label affixed to them as largely the result of an uninformed media. Those of us old enough remember that before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, and before them Dobermans, that were the "evil" "dangerous" dogs. Even the German Shepherd got a bad rap for awhile. These whimsical uninformed sensationalist stories, attitudes and opinions must obviously be viewed objectively and taken with a grain of salt.[/QUOTE]

True. I remember when (in the old movies) English Bulldogs were portrayed as mean.

The only Pit Bull I've ever delt with close up and personal belongs to the manager of my local pub. When Jezabell was a puppy I guess no one remembered to tell her she was a born killer. She will whine and cry if you don't rub her belly when you walk in. (after she smothers you with doggy kisses)

I picked up this little feller at the pound a couple months ago. We named him "Shalom". He was classified as a boxer mix, ha-ha.

I can't decide what the look on his face means.

"I been good, where's my treat?"

OR

"Get that camera outta my face of I'm going to bite yours off!"

I just love how you all buy into this BS they spew on the local news. Even though it has been documented that Pit Bulls are responsible for less than 1% of all dog attacks, they receive all the attention.

ANY dog, if raised incorrectly will be vicious.

I have said it a million times but it bears repeating,
don't blame the breed, blame the HUMAN!!!

Talking

I always find it amusing that the very people who preach tolerance towards and condemn any type of stereotyping of other species or of humans, are the first to stereotype and use hate terms towards Pitt Bulls. Go figure.

Pitt Bulls are very powerful for their size, and have powerful jaws. So when one does go off track it is not like a Beagle going off track. However, Rottweilers, Bull Mastiffs, and German Shepherds, as well as many other large powerful breeds can become problems without proper training and care.

I think one of the worse thing you can ever do to a dog is chain them up for long periods of time. If you donít have a fenced yard or they donít live inside donít get any kind of dog. So many people just don't understand this.

It always breaks my heart to see some poor dog chained to a tree or post somewhere.

Just last week a Pit put its young lady owner in the hospital, with life threatening injuries. It attacked a neighbor, then the responding LEO, who put it down. Good shoot in my opinion. Not because it was a pitbull, but because it was vicious and intent on violence.

Never had a problem with my best friends two pits, been bitten by a little foo-foo piece of **** though, and I have no use for schnauzers at all due to growing up next door to a fool breeder. I do seem to see more pits being problem dogs in our area than other breeds. Don't really think it is the dog as much as the human in most cases.

Default Maligned breeds

Recently read an article on Yahoo news page about the 7 breeds most getting bad press, was an informative read interesting facts about each breed and their particular attributes and weak spots. It pointed out that most problems stem from poor breeding practices or training. I do not take chances though with unfamiliar dogs, if I'm with family and a dog appears suspect I keep myself between my loved ones and the dog and never take my eyes off them till were at a safe distance.
