Default S&W orginal wood grips. To refinish or not?

I actually scored a really nice 624, 44 Spl 6" barrel
(Pics to follow)

The wood grips have a few dings and scratches. Nothing major. Is it better to just leave them alone or do a touch up refinish? I know wood and am pretty good at working with it. I have refinished several stocks.

The only think I am not sure of is what the original finish was on S&W wood grips.

Was it a varnish, lacquer or a polyurethane??

On all my other grips they were in fine condition, so I just cleaned them and hit them with some Old English lemon oil.

Thanks for any suggestions

OCD1,
They are probably the high gloss finish. And have a reddish tint to them.
If that is the case and you really have the urge, use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil for the finish coat and then a good coat of wax over the oil.
You may be able to touch them up with Tru-Oil without stripping them. And if a complete restoration is in order and they are too shiny use some 0000 steel wool to soften the shine. Then wax.
Toulene will strip the original finish off. Not sure what they used on the late edition grips.
If you want a softer finish get some Tung Oil (not Minwax brand).
Hope this helps.

I have Tru Oil and have used that on several stocks. I will take some pics of the gun tomorrow. It appears to have regular service grips on it when it should have target grips so I will probably get some nice aftermarket wood grips and just leave these alone.

Thanks
