Default All Gunsmiths are not equal.

All Gunsmiths are not equal.

I had what I thought to be a relatively easy change out of sights on an S&W MP9. New sight set comprised of a Novak front night sight and 10-8 Performance rear sight to replace the OEM sights. What appeared to be within the individuals competency level was not. One Novak sight rendered useless as a night sight. The plunger spring under the rear sight replaced with a non OEM spring. The rear sight marred.

So this day ventured a road trip to a competent gunsmith whom I have confidence in. The drive is a couple hours one way. Some times you just can’t afford cheap. Quality work cost but in the long run is more cost effective.

As for the other gentleman why demonize him. His was not equal to the task required. He had the correct fixtures, machinery, and tools but simply lacked the knowledge/skill/experience/competency.

Met one just like him, thirty years ago, in Kansas.

Dennis,

Have you tried

KENS GUNSMITH SHOP
105 Mid Town Arc, Madison, NC

or

BILLS CUSTOM GUNS & SERVICE
1419 Dorsey St, Greensboro, NC

I've heard no complaints on either.

Patrick

Thank you for the information.

I went over to Leonard Baity in North Wilkesboro. He’s worked on a couple of my across the course rifles. The two gentlemen you mention I’ll have to visit them.

Wanting to be and able to be are two different things which applies to all trades. My father and most of my uncles were machinist by trade and also capable tool & die makers. I grew up in a machine shop environment in the days before CNC. Most of the places I worked had machine shops so I was able to use the equipment after hours. Now I no longer have access which means I let others do what I use to do.

I am blessed by having a competant Smith south of me in Helena. The shop employs a pair of Smiths and between them they can complete some amazing work and quickly too.

And I also have the ultra rare HOME Smith who I use for some work. He has done rifle work for me and it has all been done right and his prices are very reasonable.

When you find a good one...take care of him. I've even brought mine the occasional voucher foor a Dinner or a big box of candy. Good ones are tough to find.

Nope, Dave (don't remember his last name). Pittsburg, Kansas

The name has NOT been changed to protect the inoccent; there was no innocent.

Figure that after thirty years he has either moved or given up the business.
