Wink Bee Sting Pooch!

We came home last evening and the "Range Dog", Jazper was lookin' mighty swollen. Her jowls were REALLY big. Fortunately, a quick inspection showed her tongue was fine as well as her neck and esophagus. I called my neighbor/vet just in case to see if we should take her into the 24 Vet but she assured us that is we go ahead and give her a couple Benadryl and watch her for an hour or so she'd probably start improving. She did. This morning she's doing better but still swollen (not near as much). If she's swollen toninght we will give her a couple more Benadryl.

Here's a before pic:

Here's Mega-Jowl Jazper:

Ouch! Poor Jazper!

I had a dog who got stung in several places on his head. He was lumpy for a few days.

My dalmation that died last year had that happen to him several times. The first time his face swelled up like a ballon on one side, and I thought someone had hit him with a board or something. (He was with me at a construction site), but then I saw him snapping at a bee that kept buzzing his head on another day, and realized what had happened.

A few years later we were working on a remodel job, and I had him tied up near one corner of the old house while another guy and myself started tearing down one wall. We didn't know it at first, but under that corner of the house there was a very large yellow jacket nest. They started stinging him, and I tried to get his tie-out undone to release him, but he was pulling away from the house so hard that I couldn't. I was getting stung pretty heavily ( and I had on nothing but a pair of very short cut-off jeans and tennis shoes), so I turned and ran about 20 feet then looked back. He was covered completely in bees and I saw him start to give up and go limp. That angered me and gave me the determination I needed to endure the bee stings. It took a few seconds, but I got him undone, and we ran about 50 yards to my truck. They followed us all the way still stinging us. By this time he was going into shock, and I put him on the floor and fired up and headed for the nearest vet. My regular vet was about 20 miles away, so I kept watching for any along the way. Every single one of them was closed for whatever reason, and I ended up going all the way to mine.

I ran him in through the front door and they freaked when they saw him hanging limply from my arms. They had counted well over 300 bee stings they said. There wasn't any area on him that wasn't swollen. They shot him full of anti-biotics, and steroids and kept him overnight. He recovered fully, and was even stung a few times after that without any real consequences. It is truly amazing to me what a dog can take and survive.

BTW, I lost count of my bee stings at just over 50, and that was just on the area of my body that I could see and count.

When I was married my X trained our one dog (or he actually trained himself) to relieve himself in a field down the street. So open the door, out he'd go, run about 75yds. take care of business and run back. On one such outing he stuck his butt in a bush and a bee stung him. He came yelping back to the door and I found the bee in his fur. Needless to say he would never go back to that field.

Molly, my mini Doxie, got stung a couple times. The first time she sniffed a bee on some clover. Her jowls and snout swelled up. I took her to the vet. She got a shot and I was told to get some benedryl. I figured she learned her lesson with sniffing bees. Wrong. Happened again a few months ago. It can get kinda scary seeing them swollen up like that.

It is kinda scary!!!

Barb,
She's still kinda swollen but it's getting better this afternoon.

Gun 4 Fun,
Wow, that's an ordeal!! Also a testimony to keeping a pocket knife handy!! Glad you guys were OK!

JcMack,
Since we were not here when she was zapped....I guess we won't know where the hit took place. We've been watching her mess with bees all summer...maybe she learned her lesson.

Misty,
My German Shorthaired Pointed has been skunk blasted 3 times...that one never learns!!

Bob

I hate bees! Got stung a bunch as a kid by mud wasps while running through the woods.

I am glad that range mutt (Jazper) is feeling better. Those swelled up jowls didn't stop her from eating though! Best of luck with her healing up completely VFM. I love dogs as much as I hate stinging critters!

This picture was taken some time right around the time period that he was stung (obviously not right then).

The tie out was a new nylon coated braided cable, so I don't think a knife would have worked for me. I did have my utility knife on me at the time.

I hope your buddy recovers completely, and doesn't aquire a learned hatred for every bee that she sees like Mickey did.

Our Dal (my namesake) Harley-Davidson decided on one of his field excursions after chasing a deer, to excavate a bumble bee nest. With predictable results I might add! He looked like DeNiro in "Raging Bull". Benadryl was his savior that afternoon at the vet. He never learned and stalked them to his dying day.

Sure hate to see a stung dog suffer. Here's Joe, our Pittie-Australian Sheep Dog mix as a puppy. He stuck his nose somewhere he shouldn't have. I suspect a scorpion; I've been stung myself once, and it's no picnic. We popped him some Benadryl right away, and the swelling went down completely in a couple of days. Sure gotta feel for a dog in this condition...

WG-840,
Thanks. She was in pretty good shape as far as breathing OK and having an appetite. What she did not know was she looked like Popeye!!

Death Grip,
Thanks. I passed on Diesel's regards to Jazper. She seems fully recovered this morning.

Gun 4 Fun,
Mickey looks great in the photo. I do not know how Jazper will react to bees/wasps in the future...she was destined to have an encounter the way she chased and "played" with them all spring & summer.

Spotteddog,
I had a German Shorthaired Pointer "Wilber" who would NOT give up deer either. He never got into bees or skunks though!

Bob,
That poor guy looked worse than Jazper!! Karli and I went "awww" at the same time we saw your pic of Joe! I'm glad we do not have scorpions up in this neck of the woods. We are going to keep a supply of Benedryl in the house from now on.

Bob

My Yorkie got a hold of a frog on the back porch and started foaming at the mouth immediately. It was 8 pm on a Saturday night. I got lucky and found an emergency vet that was open at night. It was only $75 and she recovered just fine but it scared me good.

Glad to hear Jazper is recovering.
Gun 4 Fun, what a beautiful Dalmation! They leave us too soon.
Paladin, I've heard so much about how poisonous scorpions are. I would have thought a scorpion sting to a dog would be fatal. Glad Joe is ok! He looks like he went 12 rounds with Mike Tyson! Except he still has both ears!
Badam, was it a poisonous frog? I've heard of that happening with frogs. Wasn't sure if it's all frogs, or just poisonous ones.
One thing, besides S&Ws, we all seem to have in common here, is a whole lotta love for our 4-legged kids!

badam0112,
The toads around here (American Toad) secrete a "don't mess with me" fluid that makes dogs & other critters drool bad and can slow down the heart rate so much as to kill the critter. The good news, the taste of this fluid is so awful, most critters drop the toad FAST and keep their mouths away. Jazper learned about the taste some time ago and now just torments and sometimes smushs the toads in an effort to "play" with them. Lately she just watches them and leaves them alone. My vet asked about Jazper salivating/drooling bad to ascertain if she had encountered a toad/frog....if she had we'd have had to take her to the vet's office right away, like you did.

Glad your little buddy made a full recovery.

Misty,
Thanks for the kind words...you are right, many of us either have pets or we like them.

Bob

I feel for you and the pooch.
When I was younger, I had a Brittany Spaniel that was stung on the jowl area. Poor guy's upper jowls were swollen and hard as a rock. It was funny and pitiful at the same time.
Hope he's doing better.

Thanks Mickey. The vet told us she really was not in pain other than the original sting. She was quite funny looking!!
