I am not much into politicians or actors/actresses, though I certainly would separate Bob Hope, and Ronald Reagan, from that crowd, what little I know of them, and would consider it an honor to have met them.
Meeting people you will never see again seems generally a dubious honor, though it can be fun for a few moments. Maybe that’s not the right way to look at it? I once met Isaac Stern and, later, Mario Andretti. I had nothing in common with Maestro Stern since I had never even handled a violin, though I could try to appreciate his talent. There was no real opportunity to speak with him - maybe it’s just as well.
Mario Andretti was another story! At that time he was the new World Champion driving the John Player Special (Team Lotus). We had a brief chat in a restaurant in Indianapolis. I think he was amused to find a Hoosier who knew a small bit about Formula One, and of course I enjoyed a few of his comments that one would not have read in the newspapers or magazines.

You NASCAR fans will appreciate this one. Cale Yarborough and his entourage at my Uncles funeral. Then I learned from my mother that she dated him once when they were in their teens. She said it was the worse date she was ever on, she sat in a chair while he worked on his car in the driveway...needles to say, no second date. Barbie Benton pinched my cheek once, and I still haven't washed it. And does Boxcar Willie count as famous?

Miss October. My 14th birthday playmate from '76. Still married to Jimmy Connors, I believe.
I used to work on Dan Pastorini's copier at his post Houston Oilers drag racing shop in my younger days. Also got to meet Evander Holyfield at City Hall when I was working on a copier there many years ago.

I’ve met a lot of MLB players and all the owners of the Dodgers (current), likewise Florida Marlins & Miami Dolphins (work related stuff).
Moto GP world champs Freddy Spencer, Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz,
Movie stars? Robert Preston was my favorite (in Belize of all places), I surfed with James Arness and Rolf....
Pop culture? Jimmy Buffet, Stevie Ray Vaughn etc etc.
....and politicians oh yeah.
Has it done me any good? Well, some were good tippers....
All in the line of work, except for the Arness family.
Oh yeah, I met Miki Dora in Biarritz. forgot about that.

I met this older man wearing a WWII hat and I started chatting with hime when his daughter came up, listening, and she said. " Tell what rank you retired with Dad." First 4 star general that I have ever met. Very nice man. John William Vessey Jr. - Wikipedia.

The Most Famous Person You've Met
That would have to be President Nixon. I met and got to talk to him one on one in,
of all places, The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. It would have been around 1984 or 85.

Jon Huntsman Sr, founder of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Mr Huntsman has donated over $1.5 billion to the Institute and left another $1 billion when he passed away.
I credit this man for saving my life and countless others.
I met him on a few occasions while volunteering at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. A true gentleman.
His personal body guard was the son of one of my closest friends and mentor. He went thru the academy to become a Salt Lake County Sheriff's Deputy with my brother.

Neil Armstrong. Twice.
Once in the mid-1980s, when the hotel where I worked at the time hosted a golf tournament and he was one of the “celebrity golfers” invited. I got to check him in.
The second time in 2005 at an aviation event in Nevada with which I was involved. That time I actually got to talk to him as a normal person; needless to say, he did not recall the hotel check-in

Doug Koenig, Bruce Piatt, Rob Leatham, Jerry Miculek, Julie Golob, Max Michel, John Pride, Mickey Fowler, Jesse Harrison, Rob Vadasz, Vera Koo, USAMU team, many more. Invented a new front sight for Jerry M. Shot the match and practice with all of them, had dinner with some a few times. These people are famous in the handgun shooting world, but most everyone else wouldn't know of them.
I see them for a week every year at the Bianchi Cup. Many are using my Bianchi shooting gear. Anyone who goes to the match can talk to them one on one, not just me. It's like a big family.

When I was a teenager I met Pat O'Brien on a TV service call. He was staying at the home while he was working at a dinner theater. Many of the younger group here probably don't know who he was.
Pat O'Brien (actor - Wikipedia)
I was in a commercial with Hacksaw Dugan and Junkyard Dog back in 1987. Again you young ones here probably never heard of them either. They both were well known wrestlers at the time.

Chuck Norris and Christy Brinkley at a book signing at a Costco and they were well protected by very large body guards, was a bit surprised that Chuck looks much larger in the movies.
Randy Weaver at a book signing at a Ks. gun show. Was hard to look him in the eye, after all that happened to him and his family, just felt so bad for him.
Ray Martinez, the off duty police officer with officer McCoy that killed the Austin Tower shooter in 1966 at another book signing. Ray was very pleasant to talk to.
James Drury, the Virginian at a gun show and barely recognized him, but also very pleasant.

President Reagan - I led a work group that raised $3 million for his first election, and was invited to the inauguration and two of the after-parties; attended all, and spent about 5 minutes talking to him directly at one of the parties. Wonderful guy.
William Hopper (played Perry Mason's investigator), the night he walked through my parents' sliding glass patio door during a party (he had a bit of a drinking problem, but was lots of fun).

I worked for many years as a stage and audio tech, so met or sometimes worked shows with a variety of people. Kathy Mattea; Arlo Guthrie; blues giants B.B. King and Taj Mahal; all members of R.E.M.; MoJo Nixon (first MTV v-jay); Julian Lennon, many others come to mind. On stage shows, mic'd up Jennifer Garner as a teenaged star-to-be in local musicals. Others included the tag team of Nick Nolte and Leslie Neilsen - both fans of my C&W band (Nolte was dating a local lady, and Neilsen came to town to relax and play golf with old friends), and I helped Neilsen load Nolte into the back of his limo after gigs all too often. At my museum, met astronaut Jon McBride, and General Chuck Yeager (who may be the toughest old man I ever met - and he verified he broke the sound barrier with broken ribs after losing a bar fight the night before).

I'm from Outstate Michigan. That means not Detroit, and not the U.P.
I have a friend who once encountered Charlton Heston while out for
a country walk. That's about it, except I once shared an elevator with
Jack Lemon in Las Vegas. We did not speak. Nice eyepatch. He died shortly after, but don't think I was a suspect.
My wife encountered the Pope's cavalcade three times the same day in Chicago once, but she was raised Episcopal so it might not count.

I'm not sure, but from a shooters perspective it has to be Robbie Leatham and family along with Brian Enos and Jack Breskovitch.
ETA - Let me add J M Plaxco and Kay Clark to the list.

I met Bill Jordan the 1974 NRA Police Pistol Matches. He was selling his book, as I recall, from the trunk of his car. Business was slow at the time, so we visited for a short while and he had the biggest hands I have ever seen on a human!! We talked briefly and he personalized my copy of his book and shook hands once again as I departed with his business was increasing. I still have that book and along with a book authored and signed by Skeeter Skelton and I treasure the memories of that day.

Somewhere in this thread is my John Fogerty story, but I also have cooked for a couple famous people.
In the early 90's, when I lived in Idaho Falls, I made chicken and steak fajitas for the band Alabama, and I also made a big deli tray for Waylon Jennings and his band. I also made a spinach salad for Toni Tennille. A friend cooked breakfast for Blue Oyster Cult while I was working in the back of the kitchen.
I didn't go meet any of them, I didn't want to seem like a gushing fan. I saw Waylon later that evening from a VIP table up front.

I've seen & heard a lot of famous people but the only one I ever actually had a conversation with was Mike Huckabee.
Nice enough for a politician and TV celeb.

...I attended junior high school with Tim Allen...Byers Junior High School...Denver Colorado...mid 1960s...
...I was in the pits at a drag race at Continental Divide Raceway (no longer there) in Castle Rock Colorado in the late 1960s...headliners were Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme doing a best 2 out of 3 match race...I was standing between them when Garlits asked for a coin to flip for lane choice...I handed him the only coin I had...a nickel...

James Irwin was a friend of a friend; he came to my home to talk to the Cub Scouts and to our business to meet and greet.
I was introduced to Seymour Cray as he toured our building.
Shook hands with Bob Dole when he was campaigning for President. (I heard Elizabeth Dole speak at an event once - I would have voted for her had she run.)
Shook hands with Chuck Yeager - huge honor!
Chatted briefly with Mario Andretti once at the local Ford dealership.

Exchanged a few words with:
Rocky Marciano, I very young and was with my Dad
Burl Ives (whatta tool)
Ray Stevens
Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer
Bruce Jenner
Lynn St. James, organized her warehouse in Dania
Charlie Hough
Played softball with a bunch of ex Dolphin players, most impressive to me was a 50 something year old Larry Ball. A back up linebacker for his career he's the only NFL player to play with both an undefeated and winless team, '72 Dolphins and '76 Tampa Bay. His quickness, reaction times and competitive drive really drove home the phenomenal level at which pro athletes compete.

A bunch
My Dad raced midgets in the northeast. Dad even ran a 100 lap midget race or two at Langhorne Speedway back when the track was dirt and a big left turn.
The Indy car series would have a 100 mile race there in June. After the time trials were done my Dad brought my brother and I down to the pit fence. A gentleman recognized Dad and called him over. We all got pit passes!
Well most of the drivers from the Indy 500 were at Langhorne I got to meet many of the great racers from the early 1960s. I got their autographs too.

Pappy Boyington at Osh Kosh air show, I bought his book which he had signed.
Gerald and Betty Ford at a campaign stop
Attended a breakfast and saw, but did not actually meet, George HW, Barbara, and Chuck Yeager. When I saw Yeager I did a double take and he smiled.
On an elevator with Barbara Eden just after she did a show. She didn't look at me, pretended I wasn't there. Don't blame her.
For Chicago area folks, I met Don and Roma Wade, radio personalities at the Chicago Auto Show. There wasn't anybody around and they chatted with me for a few minutes and gave me a signed photo. Great couple.

Well the only famous person I can remember meeting is Jani Lee from the Rock Band Warrant back in late 90's...he was in very bad health and was very heavy...we were at a event and it was rained out ...we all had to get inside quickly...he seemed like a very wounded soul...he died a,few years back...grear voice...God Bless,John

Memories revived
When asked if have met famous people, I don't remember any. This thread revives some. I worked in a building in NYC and shared an elevator with many "famous" people. I remember Raquel Welch and her boy toy(she looked old, he didn't) and also Howard Cosell (his toupe looked dorky). I generally don't bother people just because I recognize them. Regular New Yorkers never do that; they pretend they never even saw celebs.

The only autograph I ever collected, Clark Terry. He came to my high school to do a jazz clinic for our jazz band in 1969. That autograph still hangs in my office.

Good catch! I have long been an admirer of his. You could wallpaper a room with the "Who's Who" list of heavyweights he worked with.
He helped reintroduce the flugelhorn to modern jazz.

My nephew and I stopped at a little roadhouse, way up in the mountains
of central Idaho, for restroom break and some coffee. We, and the waitress
were the only ones there. A couple of dudes came in. One of
them walked over to the juke box and was looking at the songs. I
scrbbled a note and passed it to my nephew. "That is Tennessee Ernie
Ford".
My nephew called out "Hey play something by Tennessee Ernie Ford".
He smiled and walked over to our table. Shook hands and chatted for
a few minutes. Seemed to be a real nice guy.
I shook hands with Richard Nixon, me and a few hundred others in a
line.
John Davidson called me up on stage in Reno and I made a fool of
myself. (He is kinda semi-famous?)
Back in the 1960s I was doing audits for the State of Idaho. I discovered
an embezzeler who had got away with several hundred thousand dollars.
The Governor at that time first name was Don. He thanked me and
congratulated me on the good job, and then called me Bill. My name,
of course, is Phil, not Bill. So I just said thank you Ralph. He looked
a little perplexed.
I have been in the room with several other "famous people", but I
can't say I actually met them. Ed Ames, Wayne Newton, Raquel Welch,
etc....Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe shows.
Sitting in the cafe, in a Las Vegas hotel, having coffee, chatting with a
a gentleman seated beside me. As it turned out he was with Larry
Holme's entourage and invited me to come to the gym and watch
Larry's workout. I did. Ringside seat. Larry sparred with 3 different
partners for 3 rounds each. One of them didn't last all 3 rounds. Larry
knocked him out with an upper-cut to the solar plexus.
President Truman came to our town on his whistle stop tour. They let
school out so we heard his speech which he made from the back of his
railroad car.
I was with NSA in Washington D.C. in 1955 so I got to see Ike go by
in his motorcade several times.
Ran into Glen Campbell in the Salt Lake City airport, but can't say
I actually met him.
Shook hands and said Hi to Ronald Reagan one time when he was
in Boise.
In 84 years I'm sure there are other "famous" folks I have met or
at least seen in person, and I will probably think of them right after
I end this epistle.
Oh yeh, Bob Hope, Elmendorf AFB Alaska 1954.

Years ago now, we went to a Vegas downtown lounge to see Willie Nelson.
When we got seated, I looked around and was slightly embarrassed to see that Chill Wills was seated behind us.
Yes I did meet and chat with him.
Also met and talked to Willie.

Another way back - went to Survival School up at Stead AFB, Reno.
Delia Reese was singing in a lounge which was like a rather small room with a piano in the corner.
My buddy and I went there so many times that she recognized us.
She would say, are you guys here again?
Don’t you have anything better to do?
I’m going to sing the same songs.
We would say things like - we know that.
We hoping you will sing them better than last time.

Gene Autry and Champion. It was cold and he was wearing a light purple coat. As a small boy my thoughts were, "Cowboys do not wear that!" and not quite met, Admiral Arleigh E. Burke, during his visit the Charleston Minecraft Base. Operations and Deck mustered on the bow, Engineering on the fantail. As his car was driving by, he leaned out of the window and saluted.

Mine is little known or remembered today, but she was a legend in her day. For a week in 1962 or 1963--I really can't remember which--I was the unpaid chauffeur for the great singer Ethel Waters when she sang for a series of services at the church where I was the assistant pastor.
She was a grand lady, with a sharp and sometimes merciless wit. I liked her a lot.

Got drunk with Percy Sledge and his band The Sledghammers
in my college days in the late 1960's. They came over to our
fraternity house after they played the sold out show at Va Tech.
Also had the 4 top and some other groups. One of the brothers was
on the committee that booked acts.

Who opened for Roy Clark?
When we saw him it was Gatemouth Brown.
I actually did meet Gatemouth in a Honky Tonk up Colorado way.
