was mesmerized watching him pick those stringed instruments.
Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, he was a master of all of them. Pretty good

I've met numerous Nascar and Indy car drivers, have photos and autographs with most of them, as well as random baseball and basketball stars. However, if I had to pick "Most famous" was probably Mario Andretti, while I was walking around Homestead Speedway. He was super friendly and stopped and talked with me and a few other people who'd walked up. He was even nice enough to sign the back of my race ticket from that day.

Back in my more "wayward" days, I bumped into Jimi Hendrix. I was on a old Harley, Jimi and some other dude where on old choppers. At the time I really didn't know who he was, But we all did share a bottle of wine and a "toke", wuzz many years ago

I've been within feet of two US Presidents, but didn't actually speak.

Among the celebs I have talked to at any length:

Morgan Fairchild, actress. Used to be big on series like, Flamingo Road and Falcon Crest and was in some movies. She was my mother's 11th Grade Honors English student but we didn't meet until sitting next to one another's tables in a restaurant. Then, we talked for maybe an hour about shared interests, inc. paleontology.

Dr. Donald Johanson, the celebrated paleoanthropologist whose expeditions discovered the fossil Australopithecus popularly named Lucy. My daughter and I attended a guest lecture he gave at SMU and he signed his books for me in the lobby. He seemed nervous and I asked a cop why there was so much security. She replied that some people who don't believe in evolution had threatened to kill him!

Jane Goodall. Not impressed. I'm sure her chimpanzees love her, but I found her aloof and a bit condescending toward Dallas. I had the impression that if she had to visit the US, she'd have preferred to be in NYC or Los Angeles.

I've also met several famous authors and many of the gun writers, like Elmer Keith, Charles Askins, Rex Applegate, Jon Sundra, Massad Ayoob, Jeff Cooper, Skeeter Skelton, John Wootters, Craig Boddington, Peter H. Capstick, etc. I corresponded with Geoffrey Boothroyd and Jack O'Connor, but never met. Because I was a gun and knife writer myself, I ran into these guys at PR functions and in the press room at the SHOT show as well as at NRA conventions.

And I profiled some famous custom knifemakers. Two of the most famed were very talented craftsmen but no one I wanted to know socially. Both reminded me of the southern end of a northbound horse.

One of the most charming I've met was Jo Anne Hall, with whom I spent some time in her home while profiling her for, The Colt Handgunning Annual. She was both a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and World Champion Ladies IPSC shooter. She has a degree in Journalism and wrote briefly for, Guns & Ammo.

I met Duke Ellington in the mid-50s as my father worked a full summer season with him. In the 90s I met Les Paul, the guitarist. Both were straight up guys.

I shook JFK's hand in 1960 on the tarmac at Otis AFB on Cape Cod. He'd just been elected president but had not yet been inagurated and he flew in for a few days off.
Oddly, my father got transfered to Andrews AFB next and I was on Constitution Ave. In DC for his funeral procession.

I worked for astronaut and Sen. John Glenn for 4 1/2 years as 1st mate on his yacht. I was at the Cape with his family for his STS 95 launch.

While on the yacht I met quite a few famous people.

The Sen. giving Capt. Jim and myself mission patches from STS 95 that he took into space.
Teaching my 10year old daughter to run his yacht.

Was on the escort detail for Candidate George W. Bush's (43) first campaign and got to meet and shake his hand before he boarded his plane.
Got to meet President Bush (43) again on his re-election campaign while on the protective detail again. This time got in on the grip n grin line and got my photo taken with him.
Also was on the protective detail with then Vice President Cheney on the re-election campaign and again got in on the grip n grin line but no photo.
However the person I was most impressed with was General Schwarzkopf. I got assigned to the protective detail for the General when he was in our area for the Bush re-election campaign. He actually took a couple minutes to call all the Troopers together to thank us personally and ASKED if he could have a photo taken WITH US. Truly a real leader. Of all the bone headed moves, I failed to take my copy of his autobiography "It Doesn't Take A Hero" with me, to have him sign it. Really need to find those photos that got packed some where in the last move.

I was just a kid when I met them, but in a bad snow storm the town closed a road that had around a two mile downhill run. We loved it and you got the sled ride of your young life. At about the half way point Les Paul and Mary Ford owned a home and if they were there they'd have hot chocolate for us. Game show host Jan Murray also lived there and knew most of us kids.

I know this is an old thread, but I just ran across it (the previous last post was before I joined the forum). Pretty interesting seeing all the famous people members have met.

Here's my humble list.

Joanne Woodward sang a song to me on a local TV show when I was 4 or 5 years old. Shook Arnold Palmer's hand once at The Masters. Shook hands with governors Spiro Agnew and Lester Maddux once. Had a conversation with Ernie Els at the Tour Championship. Played a game of pool with boxer Thomas Hearns at a resort in Jamaica. Shook hands with Carroll O'Connor at a restaurant once. Shook hands with actor Robert Prosky at Sardi's once. Had a conversation with golfer Hubert Green at the Atlanta airport. That's about it. Nothing really significant.

Roy Rogers (we were from the same Ohio home town)
Muhammed Ali - in an Oklahoma City night club
Eleanor Roosevelt
F. Lee Ermey
George Goebel
And one most may have never heard of - Henry Mohaupt, inventor of the explosive shaped charge

I forgot Jack Nicklaus. I was in a class with him once at OSU, and Werner Von Braun.

Ran into a few famous people when I did Dignitary Protection duties in Sydney whilst in the New South Wales Police Force. Met Prince Harry way before Meghan came along.

Had a few beers (off duty) with former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage when he was out visiting Sydney. He had visited Australia a couple of times during the Vietnam war and his duties with the US Navy. Had developed a taste for Victorian Bitter in those days and insisted we had to all drink that. Who am I to argue.

Met him at a gun shop in Montgomery County PA.

I had no idea that he was into guns.

Was in Ft. Walton Honky Tonk.
Somebody say, did you know that Joe Namath is here?
No! Where is he?
I turned around , he was standing behind me.
Repeat - went down to a smaller Vegas venue to see Willie.
Was slightly embarrassed to see Chill Wills sitting behind us.
Chatted with him.
Later chatted with Willie.
Then the Waitress told us, Waylon is coming.
He’ll be here for the Midnight Show.
I called the Sitter. We gonna be late.

At my fathers house in Mill Valley, our one neighbor was one of the

Lots of great memories but so was getting to drive our jeep for the first time ever !!!!

Harry S. Truman

My Grandfather was a lifelong friend of Truman.

My Mother and I were passing through Independence, MO on our way to visit my older Brother in Kansas City. Mom decided to stopped by and visit Truman at his new library, it was not open to the public yet.

The attached photo is a scan of a polaroid I took of him at his desk.

He obliged me because of my age, around 10 years old or so, but I could tell he was just being nice to me and not thrilled I was there.

His Secret Service guys hated me because, I kept going in and out of the double bullet proof glass doors to his office. You had to pass through one door and were then in a chamber and had to wait until the other door was opened to pass on into Truman's area. As a kid this fascinated me, I had never seen anything like this.

The agents took me to the library/museum to get me out of their hair and keep me busy.

The museum was fascinating to me and kept me busy for quite a while.

While I was in the museum Thomas Benton was on scaffolding painting a full wall mural.

He must of loved kids. He asked me if I wanted to paint, I said yes.

He helped me up on the scaffold and let me paint some of the background on the mural, what an experience. It was about 1/3 completed with the rest an outline drawn on the wall with, I guess, pencil.

Attached is a finished photograph of the mural which I grabbed off the internet.

I took a lot of polaroids; unfortunately all but the one posted here were destroyed in a fire where my mother had stuff stored while we were moving in the early 1960s.

I didn't meet him, but I stood at attention as Ruffles and Flourishes then Hail to the Chief was played for RFK.
That was in San Diego. His next stop was some place in Texas.

When I was still at the Postal Service, I once delivered a Time magazine to the person on the cover. Ralph Reed was with the Christian Coalition which was headquartered in this area and he lived on my route.

... Sat and talked with Doug Turnbull most of an evening at an NRA convention in the hotel bar. At the end of the evening he literally gave me the shirt (very nice Turnbull embroidered shirt) off his back and he went back to his room in his T-shirt. Great night that one.... The rest were just a meet and maybe a quick handshake, but that night was 2 gun nuts sitting at the bar talking about a common love. He did the talkin... I did the learnin... Very nice guy.

... drove John Prine and a mutual friend around to bars all night one night in my pickup many years ago... listening to musician road stories and watching those two get knee walking commode hanging drunk.

... and due to not seeing who was coming through, I have been shoved out of the way of Richard Childress and Al Pacino by their personal bodyguards!

George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, U. S. Grant and Ben Franklin. I carry pictures of them with me all the time and they can be very influential.

Many years ago a TV miniseries was filmed in my town. The star was Charlton Heston, and I met with him ("Call me Chuck") a number of times organizing the several fund-raising events he agreed to do for our local Library campaign. As nice a "regular guy" as you'd hope to meet.

Fun thread. Worked in hotels in austin for many years, so i bumped into more than a few famous folks.

Carried BB King’s Lucille down a flight of stairs.
Delivered a small, mysterious green duffle bag to Bob Dylan.
Made Tracy Chapman mad (I developed a strong dislike for her).
Kept traffic cops from giving Earl Campbell parking tickets.
Had an accidental beer with Willie.
Met Joe Namath when he was in town for a fundraiser. Insanely nice man.

Those are the more memorable ones. Oh, and I remember tagging along with a buddy’s band who was sharing rehearsal space with Jimmy Vaughan’s crew. They were able to come in and kick out my friend’s band whenever, just because of who he was. That never sat right with me.

I have met a few. I had the displeasure of being around and talking with Mike Tyson a couple times when early in his carrier him and his crew came to Albany. They were training in Catskill NY and they would come up her and push their weight around. All fighters or ring people so who in their right mind would want to fight with these trouble making bozo's.

Met and had about a 15 minuet talk with the then governor of NY, Nelson Rockefeller. I was a apprentice pipe fitter and was repairing a boiler at the executive mansion. My BIL father was a high ranking state police officer in charge of security. He asked me if I wanted to meet the governor. As I was a apprentice I need permission from my boss to leave the work area, which I got

Went upstairs with my BIL father and spent some decent time talking to Rockefeller who later became the vice president of the US serving with Gerald Ford.

My wife, my Mother and father. My sisters .
These are my famous people.
Outside the family would have to be Jim Funk, my Advisor at Alfred University Grad school. He invented or at least he made injection of liquified coal slurries a reality for heating and energy production. These pilot plants never took off in the 1980s. One of those buried technologies that many did not want to succeed.
Other than that.. no one. I did see LBJ from a distance deplane Air Force 1 in 1965 at Hancock Field in Syracuse, NY. But that a far cry from meeting himThe Most Famous Person You've Met

Colin Powell. Worked for him for a couple of years when he was a Lieutenant General. Great leader, nice guy. His wife Alma always seemed like a great person as well. She wanted to make breakfast for me one night about 2AM when I had to come to his quarters to inform him of some deaths in a training accident.

most famous person I’ve met; I question whether he was the most famous or the most infamous, but it was King Farouk of Egypt. We raced in a world championship Go Kart race held at the Rupp Raceway at Mansfield, Ohio.
Rupp raceway was the most elaborate Kart raceway in the world at the time.
King Farouk was much better at blathering, and squandering Egypt’s wealth, than he was at racing. I don’t recall if he finished a race. I wasn’t on the winner’s podium, but finished fourth overall, and I take great pride in that finishing position, more so, than any of my many wins in my several years of Go Kart racing. Furthermore, I've met many famous people but, King Farouk tops the list

I sat at the dinner table with Governor Bill Clinton at a conference and we chatted a bit. Some years late, I shook President Bill Clinton's hand at a meeting and he recalled that we had met before.

I met Arkansas first lady Hillary Rodham (she didn't take the Clinton name until they started running for president) while on business at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock. She lived up to her unpleasant reputation.

I also shook President Obama's hand and had a short exchange with him as he was touring a tornado ravaged disaster scene in Arkansas.

I met Greggory "Pappy" Boyington at the Pine Bluff (Arkansas) Airport. I was about 19 years old and had flown in to refuel a Cessna 172 I was flying and he was in for a airshow the next day and was BS-ing with the guys in the hanger.

I met General Colin Powell at a conference in North Little Rock and sat at his table during lunch.

Mr Hockey Gordie Howe. He was in the stands at a Sabres game to watch his son Mark Howe. Buffalo’s old Memorial Auditorium, early 80s probably. During pre game skate in an almost empty arena he was sitting a few rows from me. I asked him for an autograph and you’d have thought I asked for a kidney. I was about 12 yrs old. He was kind of a jerk.
