Not all that famous but I shook hands with Rob Walton once. At about 5 Billion net worth at the time, it's the richest person I've ever met. I just looked it up ad Forbes says he's worth just under 20 billion these days.

Bob Hope in the late 70's at an Ohio University football game of all places. He was in town to do a show on campus that night ...The short story...

Billy bob Clinton. I've met Joe foot-in-mouth Biden multiple times, my mom was a campaign manager for him at one point. Met Al Bore once too, absolute and utter SOB. Biden was nice enough of a guy, but Clinton was very friendly and personable.

I was a reporter for my Texas college newspaper and learned that then Texas Congressman George Bush (Sr.) was going to be in town. I called for the slight chance he might see me for an interview. His assistant told me to meet him at the Holiday Inn where he was staying... I was shocked.

I knocked on his room and he invited me in and we sat on the end of his bed while he helped me figure out good questions to ask him. He was very generous with his time and a true gentleman to a goofy college kid. I've always respected him.

We had the opportunity to live in Paris for several years in a pretty ritzy part of town. At dinner we sat next to the designer Jean Paul Gautier and his boy friend. He's the one who designed Madonna's famous golden bra. We talked and he was pleasant and indulgent of this American.

In another restaurant there we sat next to Roman Polanski and his new wife... I'll bet he'd like to be back in Paris now. He was not very friendly.

I guess Richard Nixon. I shook his hand at a state fair.

I've met several celebrities, ranging from Presidents to Playmates. They seemed friendly and pretty human,in the main.

The warmest were Playmate Angela Little (before her centerfold appearance; we were just talking in a book store) and the actress who played Jeannie on, "I Dream of Jeanie." (Barbara Eden.)

The one with whom I talked longest (on two occasions) was Playmate Amanda Hope. (I know her last name, but she doesn't want it in print, as her stepfather is/was a lay preacher or something, and it would embarrass the family.)
She told me a lot about what goes on at Playboy behind the scenes and about some other Playmates about whom I was curious. She was kind to them, not at all catty. And she confirmed my feeling that Tiffany Sloan is especially sweet and kind. In fact, she roomed with Tiffany while they played in Playboy's Girls of Rock and Roll. (Amanda plays clarinet. Some of you guys may recall her playing clarinet in an Army band. It was in her centerfold feature.)

She was so patient and helpful that I bought her groceries the first time I met her, in, obviously, the grocery store. I was just talking to her as an attractive chick, when she mentioned playing a clarinet, and it clicked why she looked familiar.

Richard Nixon was more stressed and reserved, and not nearly as pretty. But I was just a young kid then, and I guess he knew that I couldn't vote... I think he was also uneasy in crowds or in having to deal with voters. He came across as an imperial introvert. I was pretty young, but that thought has remained with me over the years, and I think it was an accurate impression.

I've met a few. Maurice Chevalier in the Denver airport. Sugar Ray Leonard and Don King at a Kenny Norton fight in Mpls. Macho Camacho in Las Vegas when he was training for a fight. Leon Spinks in a bowling alley bar ( I have a picture of him with his arm around my shoulder... I wanted to ask him to take his bridge out for the photo but decided not to push it.) Woody Allen in Michaels Pub in NYC before I knew what a creep he was. Garrison Keeler in a bar after playing a softball game against his Jack's Auto Repair softball team from Lake Woebegone and before I knew what a creep he was too. In the shooting and self defense area Jerry Miculek, Jerry Barnhardt, Bruce Piatt, and John Farnam. And Timothy Leary at Princeton University a few days after he got out of prison ( he was not repentant).

Yuri Gagarin, met him in 1964 at the Soviet exhibit at the Worlds fair. Have his autograph on a flyer for the space exhibit. Wonder what that would be worth these days...

George W Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

Bush and Rumsfeld while on duty, Clinton when she and Bill visited Lake Winola when I was in middle school, and McCain was the speaker at my sister's graduation from Johns Hopkins. I got to meet all four in person.

I've also met James Earl Jones (my brothers college graduation, Ithaca College), David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson from the X-Files. They were doing a show based on a local area and they may have been doing some filming, but they said they often go to areas to research what it's like to make the shows more authentic.

Oh, I peed next to Bruce Willis at a urinal in NY... but I didn't talk to him or anything... that would have been pretty weird.

I have actually met several in my life.

Fleetwood Mac
Beach Boys
Jerry Barnhart
Arnold Swartzenegger
Dan "the Beast" Severn ( former UFC champ)
Then Senator Joe Knollenburg ( we met him at an NRA sponsored meeting in a woman's home near us)
Don "The Dragon" Wilson (same weekend as Arnold)

and a few others I can't recall at the moment. I got to meet a lot of Rock stars when I was young, because they all came into my brother-in-laws dad's business to play Pine Knob. We unloaded luggage from their planes, and they gave us tickets to their concerts.

I hate to admit it but I shook hands with Ted Kennedy when he was campaigning for his brother Bobby.
My best most famous would have to be Bob Hoover.
One of the greatest test pilots and showman in the world.

Mary Hartline, star of live T.V. kids show Super Circus in Chicago circa: 1955. Cub Scouts (I was one 8 or so at the time) went to the live show and Mary patted me on the head. My father (who loved her) told me "never wash your head again" I never have.

Playmate Patti McGuire....just before she was named Playmate of the Year. My signed copy of her issue Playboy has , somehow, disappeared. Nice gal. We, my ex and I, talked to her for about 1/2 an hour on her break at an auto show.

I was hitting golf balls into a net at the Louisiana Sportsman Show back in '83 when someone said, "You've got a great swing. Where'd you learn to play?" I turned around and was looking at Johnny U.

Ted Nugent after he moved to this area(central Texas)

Thomas Harris, but I was about 9 years old. He came to my father's funeral. They were friends when he was a student at Baylor University and worked at the Waco paper with my father.

I met Niel Armstrong at the aerospace musiem in Wapakoneta Ohio back in the early 80's, I was about 12 at the time.
I also met David Alan Coe 5 or 6 times after his shows for autographs, and sat with him and his family for dinner before a show in Paducah KY ....about 5 of my friend and I were sitting at a large table in the hotel resturant when him and his family came down to eat, there were no other tables left so he asked if he could join us...we were pretty excited because we were there to see him anyway. Then later at the show in the same hotel he must have said somthing to the wait staff , because we had free beer all night at our table...it was awsome.

Al Sharpton before he was known outside of the NYC/ Albany area. (believe me I would rather have had some intestinal parasite). But I did get to meet Charles W. "Chuck" Lindberg, who was the last surviving member of the first Iwo Jima flag raising (the second was the one made famous by the Rosenthal photo). I met him in 2003 when he dedicated a memorial and cemetary locally and got to shake his hand and he signed a program for me which I still have. I would rather meet more heroes like him than any overpaid celebrity or athlete any day of the week.

Ummm... Ray LaHood, in terms of politicians (he's transportation secretary currently). Other than that, a lot of metal musicians who probably aren't notable to people who don't listen to a lot of metal.

Thought provoking post---

I've met various politicians, music industry stars, TV personalities, the late Joe Foss, Ted Turner, G. Gordon Liddy, many others famous in some circles, but for pure, unadulterated fame, it would have to be Paul Simon, back when he was half of the then still acoustic duo of Simon & what's his name. An affable and engaging fellow with a complete lack of self-importance and an interest in the political and cultural views of a couple of kids from fly-over country.

Kirk Douglas.

I worked with my father in the mid to late 70s. He had a small glass shop in the west Los Angeles area. We use to make house calls in the Hollywood Hills and in Beverly Hills quite a bit. One morning we arrived at Kirk Douglas' home in Beverly Hills to do a small job, he was home at the time. As we worked there came a point when we could've used a third pair of hands. Mr. Douglas noticed the situation and jumped right in. He's great guy . . . a guy's guy.

However, my most memorable moment working with Dad occurred one afternoon when we were called to replace a heavy glass top for a coffee table at the home of Harold Hecht. The name sounded somewhat familar to me, but it didn't ring the bell. He was not there for the appointment, but left a key for us. So we went in and began measuring the chipped table top for replacement.

On the very table we were working on I see spotted an Academy Award (Oscar), no special display or anything, it was just sitting there. You don't see those everyday. I couldn't resist, so I reached over and picked it up (heavy). It was the 1955 Academy Award for Best Picture for one of my favorite movies, Marty. The Best Picture award goes to the Producer, in this case Mr. Harold Hecht. Touching history is really, really cool.

Lindsay Wagner way back when. She was very nice and better looking in person than on TV. Took me awhile to get over that little infatuation. On second thought, maybe I'm not over it.

Ted Nugent a few years ago. He was good to my kids, went out of his way to talk to them.

I got to "flip off" Bill Clinton once while he was sitting in Airforce one. Does that count?

Smile Met Hank Williams Jr.

Hello...met Hank Williams Jr. at the OGCA show in Shelby, Ohio many years ago...well actually did not formally meet him but did go up to him and ask him if he was Hank Jr.. and he said he was! His name badge said "Special Guest" but I believe he is a member of OGCA. Thanks

Mario Andretti, Barbara Bach, and George "The Animal" Steel.

Not at the same time, and not in that order!

Was three feet away from Whitney Houston just before she went on stage, but did not speak to her. I had the backstage detail, and we were not supposed to be bothering the "Stars".

I've met several. Martin Robinson (Marty Robbins) made a yearly trip to my Dad's Chevy dealership to buy a car (s), Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson were longtime golfing buddies of my dad, Sandra Dee, a close school friend of my sister, Sandy Dunkin (we were both being fitted with artifical eyes in Dallas), Dave Dudley and Tom T Hall, from the dog show circuit, Gary Powers - gave him a tour of our General Dynamics Plant in Texas.

I met Hulk Hogan through a mutual friend about 15 years ago. Very nice guy. Seemed real down to earth and not at all pretentious. Also met his wife and remember thinking she was more affected by his fame than he was - kind of like a military officer's wife that thinks the "rank" belongs to her as well.

- Sat next to Eddie Albert on a flight from Chicago to LA in the late 70s. Extremely friendly, outgoing, acted like a "guy next door." We talked about a few things, nothing about "Green Acres."
- Paul Newman in a grocery store in Martinsburg, WV in the early 80s, when he used to race cars near there.
- Sat at the table next to Bill Bixby in a restaurant in OH in the late 60s.
- Mario Andretti at a trade show in the late 90s
- Brian Williams, Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Ann Curry, Tom Brokaw, John Siegenthaler, Lester Holt, and a few other NBC News anchors while doing a consulting job for NBC in NYC in early 2001.
- Sat at a table next to Robert Conrad in a restaurant in Denver in the early 80s. Really great guy.
- Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick at the stage entrance after seeing "The Producers" on Broadway.
- GySgt Carlos Hathcock at Quantico in the 70s, and again at book signing table an OGCA gun show in 1990 at the IX Center in Cleveland.
- Enola Gay pilot Gen. Paul Tibbetts at a gun show in Harrisburg, PA several years ago.
- Stephen King at a gas station in Smethport, PA maybe 8-10 years ago when he was riding his H-D across US6 in northern PA. Friendly, but way creepier in real life than on TV -- "neck hair standing up, can't wait to leave" creepy. Ugh.
- Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neal Peart in (where else?) YYZ (Toronto - Pearson International Airport) while waiting for the same flight.

Did you think Stephen King was looking at you trying to imagine various strange death scenarios you could experience?
