Default Skeeter Skelton Tribute

I bought my Smith & Wesson Model 624 .44 in 1989 off the "used gun" counter at a local gun store. Skeeter Skelton said that the only way S&W could improve the Model 24 was to make it in stainless steel. Well, when I saw this 4" barrel revolver, I just had to have it. My dad did some work on the action and it's smooth as can be double action with a 2 1/2 pound single action trigger pull.

It's been a shooter, not a safe queen, since I bought it. I did send a tracing of my right hand to Deacon Deason at the old Bear Hug Grips and he made me a pair of his Skelton style grips out of my favorite wood, birdseye maple. I carried and shot the gun like this for years in an El Paso Saddlery Threepersons crossdraw holster. I installed a red fiber optic front sight and had Weigand Combat install their rear blade on the factory rear adjustable sight. After many years of use, I sent the gun to Michael Gouse ( Gouse Freelance Firearms Engraving & Montana Art Emporium ) and he engraved it with 75% coverage American Scroll with Skeeter's cattle brand on the backstrap. I swapped out the red fiber optic sight for a McGivern gold bead since it fit the style of the gun much better.

I've still got the well used El Paso Saddlery Threepersons crossdraw holster to carry the 624 when needed, but my .44 rested in a zippered gun rug when it was tucked away in my safe. In the back of my mind, I knew I needed a better home for my special Skeeter tribute revolver.

Then Ruger came out with the limited edition Lipsey's Exclusive .44 Special Blackhawk earlier this year. When I first read about it, I was very intrigued. When I saw that the ugly "WARNING: Before shooting gun, read...." was moved from the left side of the barrel to the underside where it was out of the way, I knew I just had to have one. It would be the perfect match for my S&W.

The Lipsey's Blackhawk was very hard to find. I finally secured one, but that's a story for another time (it's a great story though!). I immediately went on Cary C's website ( Ruger Custom Grips ) and perused his birdseye maple blanks. I ordered a set with original style Ruger medallions and received them a few weeks later. Now I had my two Skeeter Skelton .44 Specials, the two revolvers he said would be the ultimate .44's. I even had them outfitted with birdseye maple stocks that I love.

But the Ruger was just in another zippered gun rug and that was just no good.

I searched around on Ebay and found a silverware box from the 1950's made of solid wood (there's quite a few of them up for auction). I didn't care that the inside felt was an ugly, faded, and completely worn green color. I liked the box's wood and it's notched corners, so I bought it for $29. I figured making my own presentation case would be much cheaper than buying one pre-made.

When the box arrived, I expended a little elbow grease sanding the it down. Then I refinished it with several coats of Lin-Speed oil, sanding between coats and using 00 steel wool. I got it to where it had a nice satin oil finish, which I think looks rather subtle.

I cut a section of pine to fit inside the box and then traced the outline of the two revolvers. My brother-in-law cut out the shapes with his saw for me. I then drilled six holes in the lower right hand corner to hold six rounds of my hot 240 grain Skeeter reloads.

When I went to the fabric store, I was the only guy in the place. I picked out some royal blue velvet and then spent the afternoon fitting it to the insides of the box.

I think it turned out really well. I like the idea that the presentation case is a silverware box because I can leave it out like it has silverware in it. I may put some old, collectible boxes of .44 Special ammo in the bottom drawer if I can find some. Or maybe some speedloaders filled with Cor-Bon .44 hollowpoints. Hmmmm. I'll have to think about what else to put in that drawer. Any suggestions?

I have brass side handles for lifting the box and a brass nameplate for the top. Drawer pulls might be neat (made out of .44 Special brass perhaps?), but then again, I like how the box looks plain and rather simple. This box has indented grooves to help in opening and indents on the bottom edges for lifting, so it doesn't really neat all the brass exterior hardware.

(By the way, that's my mom in the framed picture from when she was around 19 years old. She's posing with my dad's 1934 Ford Five Window Coupe circa 1948.)

There is just one little thing left to do...of course. I'm in line and just waiting to hear from Gouse so I can send the Blackhawk off to him. The Ruger is going to look much better when it is engraved to match the S&W!

So what do you all think?

-Steve

That is first class and I think Skeeter would approve. I have a safe full of guns that Skeeter made me buy. His family posted here in the past, it would be nice if they saw it.

Very nice indeed.

Wasn't there some thing special at the end of the day around the campfire way out on the Turkey Trot range, to help help wash the day's dust down??? A proper little flask might be just the thing for that bottom drawer....

What a NICE job you've done there!!!!

Excellent sir!

You should e-mail this thread to Bart, his son. I bet he'd love it.

Great project, beautiful results. That Ford looks newer than 1934--
1939, maybe?

When Deacon Deason passed away, that was also the end of Bear Hug Grips. Grips similar in style are available from others today, but they don't quite make 'em like Deacon made 'em for Skeeter.

My front sight with the gold bead is from SDM. I forget it's height, but I just measured the stock front sight and replaced it with the same.

Here's a link to their gold bead sights:

Very nice tribute indeed. I also bought my 4" 24-3 used several years ago. It isn't a safe queen, as it is just too much fun to shoot. I think Skeeter would approve.

That's about the finest set of .44 Special revolvers anyone could ask for. Many thanks from me and my family for assembling such a beautiful and impressive pair of six-shooters. I sure like the engraving on the Model 24, and the Bar-T brand (after which I was named) is one great touch.

Thanks again.

Bart

As a long time {longer than I care to admit} fan of Skeeter Skelton , I think you have a very fitting and extremely neat tribute to him that we can all enjoy. Every time I see your pictures of them I am reminded of all the many hours of reading and discussing with other dedicated gunners Skeeter's many articles and books. He truly was the type of man and writer that I so miss today, and how cool is it when his son comments. After all, we older forum members "watched" him grow up thru Skeeter's writings. All my best, Joe.

Nicely done! It's a great pleasure to see stuff like this and imagine the "relationship" members have with their revolvers, and what it might mean to them. Maybe relationship is kind of a corny word, but I think you know what I mean.

Keep us posted when the single action gets its engraving treatment.

This thread made me dig out my copy of Hoglegs, Hipshots, and Jalapenos. Skeeter was certainly one of a kind. When I began writing here and there for a few different places, I always thought of two writers that had no real training in journalism, writing, etc. They were Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton. But I always liked Skeeter's style more, much more entertaining.

Looks like Skeeters car is a 1935 Ford Coupe. Flat head V-8 & mechanical brakes. Go like Hell but wouldn't stop for sour Owl poop. I had several Model A's, a '33 Ford & a '39 convertible in my youth.

One of these days, I'm going to hunt down one of Mr. Skelton's books and see what all the fuss is about. When a bunch of gun-nuts actually agree on something, that reason to pause and take note.

Seems like I read once that Skeeter majored in English during his college days following his service in the Marine Corps.

Bart, welcome to the Forum.

Your father was , as you know, one of the most respected and beloved gunwriters to ever touch a typewriter. I often wish I had called him when I bought my M24-3.

And your writing is pretty good too.

Great job! That is a beautiful pair of revolvers, and very nicely presented! That 624 is one of the nicest-looking firearms I have ever seen!

I'm thinking a small silver hip flask with the Bar-T brand engraved on it would make a nice bottom-drawer accessory.

Here's one of my favorite Skeeter lines...

"Saying the .357 is insignificant as a hunting round is like saying that sourmash bourbon constitutes an unimportant factor in the diet of man. Maybe, but ain't there lots of it being put to use?"

M29since14: "Relationship" is just perfect and I don't care if it's corny!

"Keep us posted when the single action gets its engraving treatment."

You betcha I will!

Bart: A public thank you for your very kind words. It pleases me more than you can know to have you take the time to acknowledge this post.

Herknav: Good luck finding either "Good Friends, Good Guns, Good Whiskey" or "Hoglegs, Hipshots, and Jalepenos" because most of us who have copy wouldn't sell it for the world. The few that pop up on the internet go for big bucks. For those that don't know, Shooting Times magazine has been running Skeeter's old column for about a year or so now. Magazine Subscriptions – up to 90% off magazine subscriptions and others have subscriptions for just $1.42 a month delivered right to your door. You can get Guns & Ammo and read Bart's column every month for just $1.08 a month. For under two fifty, you get not only two great gun writers, but all the others and color pictures of guns included! It's a hard deal to beat!

A fabulous tribute to a great writer. Skeeter is responsible for my life long love of S&W's. As a younger man, I read everything he wrote, and enjoyed every minute.

He has influenced many lives in a positive way.

I was out shooting my Model 19 this morning and got thinking about Skeeter Skelton and the Bear Hug grip I have on the gun. I tried to find Bear Hug grips on the internet and ended up finding this forum. This is really great. The one thing about Skeeter that I can't find anywhere is his excellent recipe for chili beans. Does anyone out there have it?

It is because of Skeeter Skelton alone that I have the below Smith and Wessons.

And it is entirely his fault that I have many more handguns of Colt, Smith and Wesson, and Uberti make.

I wish I would have kept all of the Shooting Times that he wrote in. The magazine has never held my interest since his departure.

MM,

Thanks for providing pics of this awesome tribute. I just finished reading
"Good Friends, Good Guns, Good Whiskey" last weekend and I am about to die for a 5" Model 27. I really enjoyed reading his stories and I was delighted to see your fantastic .44. Please update the thread when you get the "thumb buster" engraved.
