Default Police Shooting Qualifications?

Hello there...
What do you have to do to qualify for the police force as far as shooting a semi-auto pistol at targets goes? What I mean is, how do you have to shoot targets, or get scored fo what you did?
For that matter (if you know) what about the military, FBI, ect.?
As always, thank you kindly to anyone in the military or law enforcement.
My cousin's husband is a Marine in Afghanistan and we get to talk to him occasionally. We saw him a over the summer after about a 50 day boat ride on what he said was a floating bus with a bunch of other Marines. He is as tough as nails.
He is always really pumped up after being out away from base camp(?) for two weeks at a time.
Take care all.

Different departments, states, agencies, etc all have different weapons qualification requirements. Here in Maine the standards are set by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and all LEO's shoot the same courses of fire, regardless of department or agency. The duty side arm course is 50 rds, you go through it twice and must get passing scores both times, I believe you must score a minimum of 42 hits out of 50 shots. You shoot from 3yds to 25yds, center mass and head shots, single shots, double and triple taps, failure drills, standing, kneeling, prone, from the holster and from the low ready, stationary and moving.

Its changed over the years. In 1972/1973 I attended the Treasury Academy at 1310 L. St, NW in the District of Criminals. Every Agency I knew of was carrying revolvers and we shot the SQC using a 25 yard pistol target at 15 yards.
All rounds were fired one handed, single action.
10 rounds in two five round strings taking what ever time you wanted. 10 rounds in two five round strings, each 5 round string in 30 seconds. The last 10 rounds were fired in 2 five round strings, each string you had 10 seconds.
Passing was 270. If you didn't pass you were dropped from the school.

The Combat course was a standard NRA 1500. 7, 15, 25, and 50 yards that we shot out at the ranges in Beltsville, Md.... After you qualified with the Treasuy's Model 15 you could shoot what ever pistol you were issued or allowed to carry. Again, no qual, Adios. Qualification with the Uzi's was the most fun.

The pistol qualifications changed over the years as the departments/agencies became more sensitive to the needs of the officers on the street.

The Agency I worked for allowed the Firearms Instructors to use several different firearms qualifications courses that were approved by the Agency. It varied as to what looked good for that day and time.

The last qualification I had just before I retired was 3 yards, 5 yards, 7 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards, 25 yards and 6 rounds at 50 yards. No biggie.

The agency I worked for required you to qualify with your duty gun and your Off Duty/BUG on the same qualification.
We had quarterly qualifications and they gave you as much ammo to pratice with as you wanted.

We also qualified with our M16s, 870s and Precission Rifles.

Our Scores were based on 60 rounds for the Combat Courses, each round counting 5 points each on the target.
Shooting the Hostage was an automatic disqualification and you had to shoot the course over.....

Qualification was one thing, firearms training was another.

As has already been expressed, each agency has their own course of fire, some are based scientific data, some not.

We have in the past we have had courses that emphasize marksmanship, other courses that emphasize decision making skills, and other courses that emphasize practical shooting skill,(shooting on the move, shooting at night, multiple target engagement, good guy/bad guy selection).

There is a trend to reduce the number of courses per year due to budget contraints.

It remains to be seen if there is an impact on performance. I suspect that unless there are lawsuits associated with bad outcomes in shooting situations there will not be a return to frequent qualification sessions.

The department qualifies twice a year and we missed the last one for some reason. I qualify myself at least twice a month.
