Default Anyone else fed up with Subway?

Minor rant, but I went to Subway sub shop the other day and asked for a three meat and cheese combo. The slices of ham, bologna and salami stacked together didn't measure 1/16 of an inch, together about the thickness of a toothpick. The two pieces of provolone you could read a newspaper through.
So today the Sunday newspaper have coupons for Subway and show a Buffalo Chicken sub stacked inches high with chicken. Betcha I can't get one that looks like the picture.
No wonder Jerrod lost so much weight.
I'll never go back!
Rant over.

Take the coupon in and ask for one just like the picture. I'd be interested in what you get.

Subway here puts so much on you can hardly eat it all.

Never liked Subway for the reasons you stated. We have a Mom Pop little hole in the wall sub shop. Transplanted New Yorkers. I do not see how they have stayed in business for over 20 years. Their is so much meat on the sandwich it has to be a 1lb (full length) and it cost less than if you bought 1lb of meat at the grocery store.

I'm ready for LUNCH!

Probley depends more on who is at the counter. I usualy get two different sandwichs, bacon comes with the wifes type. She doesnt want the bacon so I always have them put her bacon on my sandwich. About a month ago a new kid was at the counter. He was going to charge me extra for putting her bacon on my sandwich! I got hot! Manager came out and apologised in front of him saying it was his first day. I apoligised back.

That's why I like our local sub shop, you want a full sub, it weighs about 4-5 pounds, and take two-three days to eat, and costs $10.

I never had much luck asking them to 'make it like the picture'. They always insist on asking me if I want every little thing on the sandwich anyway. I was told they are not allowed to just, 'make it like the picture'.

There's a little hole-in-the-wall Subway near where I work, and to me they give good value for the money.

We have a few subway's around here and they all suck for the same reason.

Wanna know why??
So you spend the extra money for the "double meat" option.

I have switched my sub love to Quizno's, and I won't go back.

The problem around here with the portions is that you have to keep on them or you'll just get 2 olive slices and 3 pickles on a 6" sub. Anouther gripe is that entering a Subway shop is like walking into a third work country. Some are like walking into the entire freaking United Nations.

Have you ever noticed that the person prepping your food apportions items according to their personal likes and dislikes. If they like your particular choice of dressing or garnish you get a lot of it. If they dislike the particular item you barely get a sampling. I asked for black olive on a sandwich in a subway sometime back and got six slices. I asked the girl preparing my sandwich if she liked black olive. "Can't stand them" was the response. I always ask for my salad dressing on the side...if the person applying the dressing likes dressing you can literally end up w/ soup & salad in one bowl.

Sounds like not much has changed in over 30 years.

The best deal is probably still their meatless sub, or veggie sub (whatever it is called these days).

Order one with everything, and extra oil and vinegar, it should fill you up.

I like Subway. They fix it just like I ask every time (it helps a lot if you ask nicely). Five bucks for a foot long is not a bad deal compared to most of the other fast food places. As far as who is behind the counter...they make a little more than minimum wage and are just trying to get by like all the rest of the minimum wages folks out there and frankly I don't care what color they are or where they are from as long as they do the job. I have never been in a Subway that wasn't extremely clean, neat and tidy, not the case at McD's, Burger king etc.. If you don't like Subway the solution is quite simple...don't go. (o;

That's exactly what I got. I couldn't believe they could slice meat that thin, each slice was the thickness of paper. The last time I was in a Subway (different state) it was just as bad and they haven't changed one bit. How they manage to stay in business screwing the public like that, I don't know.
The local Publix supermarket makes a sub that has ten times the meat, a foot long for $6.49.

I have found the local Subways are well run, give good value for the money but where possible I prefer local operations, many here in NJ are still run by paysans.

In my part of NC the Subways prepare a sub that looks like the picture. In fact some of the subs are to big to bite. I have always been pleased with their product and service.

It's the franchise thing. There's one near my work that is slim on the sandwiches.
The one near our high school piles it on.
I still like the local places though.

It wasn't the food that drove me away from Subway - it was the appearance of the employees. I walked into my neighborhood Subway and they had the dirtiest, scabby human I ever saw handling food - I almost threw up as I ran out the door. I haven't been back to one since.

We were in one in Virginia Beach. The sole guy working there put his plastic gloves on to make the subs for the person in line ahead of us. When he was finished, he pulled his gloves off inside out to ring up the purchase. Then as he turned to us to make our sandwiches, he started to put the same gloves back on inside out! We said, "Hey! Put new gloves on, would ya??"

At least at Subway you can keep an eye on the food handlers.

When I was a kid I worked in a meat dept in a little mom and pop grocery. When customers asked us to slice the meat or cheese very thin we called it the " company cut ". Our Subways around here are pretty good but if there is one close I prefer the honey mustard chicken at Quiznos.

We have a great little gas station about 15 miles down 67 highway in Zion . Their deli sandwiches are 4" thick and cost $2.50 and they sell a ton of them ever day.

When in St. Louis I buy Penn. Station sub's Hmmm GOOD!

OK, I'm hungry, I think I'll stop at White Castle for breakfast.

Heck, I'm not going to eat any of that greenie tree huggin' ****.

Give me a ham sandwich with ham and cheese mayo and horseradish on it on good old fashioned bleached white bread- no greenery for me! I do like a good tomato and onion on it, but only if they are fresh and not store-bought. If it is healthy, it don't belong on a ham sandwich.

If I want fiber and low fat, I'll get a salad.

However,

Since they are franchised the quality and quantity vary greatly. My wife and I found that out traveling as it was one of the healthier fast food places to eat.

But let me tell you about the one in central PA a couple of years ago. The young man made me a really nice full meaty sandwich and when I was about to pay for it the manager/owner ran in and yelled at him for putting too much meat on it and proceeded to rip my sandwich apart and throw the meat in the trash can. I told him to keep the @#&*(* sandwich and walked out of the place. I believe it was in Lititz.

I always preferred Quizno's... too bad two different Quizno's franchises in my town both failed. Fortunately, we have Penn Station subs. They make one hell of a Reuben.

I'd just about given up on sub shop subs. Then a few months ago this Egyptian emigrant couple moved into our area and opened up a sub/gyro/pizza shop. The subs and gyros are great and the pizza is OK. Said they came from NYC and these are NYC style subs.

I try to avoid Subway.

subway is actually healthy food. If you leave off the mayo and cheese it is only a 400 calorie salad-- er sandwich. Quizino's on the other hand is terrible. I would rather be hungry than eat there!

Nope, makin' it.

How sweet do you want the tea?
Two cups a'sugar to the gallon, or two and a half?
I hope you like extra, extra sharp 2yr. old Vermont cheddar on your sandwich.

Not to mention it costs like $14 to get a sandwich there. No thanks.

That was domino's pizza. I have never, nor will I ever eat at their establishments.

Just cook at home, or go to a grocery store and buy a loaf of bread, some deli meat and cheese. It's cheaper, cleaner and you know what you get.

I got "fed up" at Subway twice last week while we were on the road. I don't eat there often, but I usually enjoy it when I do. I almost always go for the tuna, unless it looks old and gray (like me). Years ago, I lived near a Subway and the girl that worked there would give me four heaping scoops, instead of four level scoops. I think she wanted me!

My typical Subway order;

"Hi!"

"I'd like a foot long on cheese bread, add provolone and please toast it with just the cheese on the bun."

[thought bubble] What's up with the nose ring, Angus?"

"Tuna."

[thought bubble] Enough with the pat, pat, pat... Don't play with my tuna spread so much. Just plop the four leveled scoops on the bun and lets move along. Your not laying tile and it doesn't have to be perfect. I don't care what the name tag says, you're not really an artist.

"Lettuce, tomato, pickles, black olives, onion, just a few jalapenos, salt/pepper and a bead of mayo."

[important strategy] Tell them your choice of toppings one at a time and wait for them to put that topping on before you select the next one. Don’t confuse them.

"That's perfect! Could you please wrap the halves separately, so I can eat it while I drive. You really are an artist!"

"No chips, no pop, but may I have a few extra napkins please? Thank You Very Much. Buh-bye!"

Subways and Dunkin Donuts around here are totally under control of Indians. They are shrewd bussiness people that could make twenty shandwiches out of a 1/2 pound of salomi. I used to eat there but no more as they count every slice, and condiments are usually the carriers of the better known food poisoning. Their stuff looks suspicious to me.

I guess I'll share a subway story in this thread.

I occasionally eat at the local subway and I have never seen any sort of store manager or franchise owner in the store. Frequent turnover in staff, and some of them are not much concerned with customer service.

One day I walk in there and they are fairly busy with a small line of customers waiting, but there is only one young man working. The young man was about 17ish I'd guess. As I get closer to the start of the sandwich making process I glean that earlier in the day this young mans two co-workers just up and quit just before the lunch rush, leaving him there to fend for himself. He had tried to call the 'manager' for help but was told no help was available.

He was clearly very stressed but he did his best and apologized profusely to all of us in line. Remember, he is doing the whole process from start of the sandwich to ringing up the orders at the till. All the customers understood and could see that the kid was busting his butt, except for one customer...

There always has to be that one guy it seems. I'll call him Mr. self-important for lack of better pc term. He had the bluetooth ear thingy (but not on a call) and was reading a handful of papers in between his angry scowl at the kid and his smart Alec under the breath comments about the situation.

When he got to the point where his sandwich was to be made he acted like it was a huge inconvience each time the kid asked what he wanted on the sandwhich. He was very rude to the kid through the whole process. When the sandwich was complete and the young man was ringing up the order, Mr. self-important turns around and walks out of the store leaving his completed sandwich on the counter.

Meanwhile, a mother and daughter were eating their lunch at one of the tables and the daughter was seated such that she could see the whole thing going down. I'm guessing she was probably 22 years old or so. The minute the door closed behind Mr. self-important, she got up and went over to the soda machine, grabbed a cup, went up the counter, put $10 in it and shoved it across the counter to the kid and told him to forget that clown and that he was doing a great job. The rest of us in line followed suit with tips in the cup.

He could have just as easily walked out that day like his 'co-workers', especially when told there was no additional help coming, but he did not quit. This kind of behavior gives one hope for our countries young folks.

About 8 years ago I had a friend lost 50lbs on the subway I do not understand how he could eat subways for two meals a day.

Around that time i thought I would try a Subway the kid making the sandwich was not wearing gloves I assumed (hoped) he had washed his hands. Half way through making my sandwich someone asked him for keys to the bathroom he took them off a hook handed to the girl and went right back to making my sandwich, I have not gone back since.
