I've got 500 yard fields of fire in every direction around my house and good neighbors who have even more canned food, chopped wood, guns, and ammo than I do. Here will do just fine, thanks.

I’ve read that the supposedly average walking rate for males is 3.5 miles per hour or 17.14 minutes per mile. Walking everyday weather permitting I can average 19.73 minutes per mile over a distance of between 8 to 10 miles hilly terrain. Extended distance example 20 miles the rate of minutes per mile average increases. When one leaves paved road beds or established trails times fluctuate.

I’m approaching the mid point of my sixth decade. When I do these walks I travel with the minimum. In my opinion less is best.

The majority of individuals past their mid thirties couldn’t walk fifty miles to save their selves. If they did walk that distance their path would be littered with what they once considered essential items of survival.

If we had get out the first thing i would have is the kids in tow with one of the kiddy carts attached to my bycicle, the second is another kiddy cart attached to the other adult bycicle with all the supplies.I would also have a small fanny for the wife and a medium day pack on both our backs. Each kiddy cart will hold up to 100 pounds, and if you have older kids like i do,let them help by carrying some of their own gear like cloths and small stuff on them on their bike.I have even attached head lights to the front of all our bikes so if the need arise to leave at night we can do so.I know it's not the fastest way but it sure beats walking.

I would pack according to the weather, light summer,or heavy winter.I would take 3 extra ponchos to cover the kiddy carts so the kids or our gear never got wet, using them while camping to catch water or a tarp for the ground.

I would take a brick of .22 for a marlin model 60,2/50 round boxes of .40 cal for my g22 and kel-tec .40 cal carbine which takes the same,1 box of .357 ammo for my wife's snubbie. If and only if i had the room i'de pack my shotgun, and my shotgun belt of 25 rounds on me with my g22 holster. The next thing i would carry is a good fillet knife and pocket knife. After that some fishing line, sinkers a film canister of hooks for fishing.I would take a small flash light for each member of the family attached to the pack, they seem to last longer than big battery lights.

Oh the biggest and most important thing i would carry would be a good book for both you and the kids, nothing is worse than to have 2 or 3 bored kids while sitting around camping and it would also take their minds of things.

Aloha,

Living in Hawaii on an island 2,500 miles from the closest help, we're on our own until the cavalry arrives.

Unless it's a major Tsunami, we aren't going anywhere.

We have 2 Honda generators and a bunch of 6 gal boat gas tanks.
I saved the plastic 1 liter and larger plastic drink bottles to put filter faucet water into.
We have lots of toilet paper, Spam and Rice. Not to mention blue tarps.
My SUV is rated to Tow 6,800 pounds. I Always leave the trailer hitch on.

I guess Everyone has a 10/22 or similar. Not to mention a western assault rifle(Winchester lever gun) and more modern stuff with a "reasonable" amount of ammo.

I tell friends that it wouldn't hurt to have a rifle that will take a bayonet(just in case the barbarians get thru the gates) :-)

The wife and I are hopefully prepared for 2 weeks, longer if necessary.

Just hope the Navy can get supplies here in a week or less, as most of the population is Unprepared for a situation lasting longer than a couple of days.
It took the Island of Kauai a month before electricity was restored. Don't know how long it will take Oahu to get the power running.

Guess I have to start reloading now so I have ammo to shoot.

You might want a few more things than ammo.

The comments are very interesting.

Hey, that was my line from early in the thread...

Back in the early 1960s, the fad made popular by President Kennedy was the 50 mile hike. It generated a lot of sore feet, and boosted the sales of asprin dramatically. But the point was made that most folks can't do it. Anyone who tried knows you can't do it at one "sitting". It takes a few days of walking, and military training starts to show its practical side. Extra pairs of socks start to become very valuable. Regular rests also show their wisdom. Fast doesn't make it, steady is what will get you there. If you're traveling on your feet, take good care of them.

Anyone here remember how much time it was supposed to take? Was it 24 hours, or 36?

I discussed this thread with a buddy of mine and we both came to the conclusion that if we bug out ALL we are taking is ammo. With guns and ammo I can get food and clothes. I would not want it to come to that, but I can guarantee when it comes to me and mines survival, if you aint close to me or serve a purpose, you are nothing but a face.
