Diabetes Supplies (?)
My Missus was recently diagnosed with diabetes, I'm guessing it's type 2 diabetes - she does not take insulin, just medications prescribed by our doctor. I've seen "free diabetes supplies" advertisements - I'm guessing this "free" stuff is run by a Medicare program. Can any one tell me how this thing works? In addition to Medicare, we are covered by Blue Cross, but if Medicare provides the supplies free, I'll give it try. If you use such programs, which of the "free" suppliers do you use or recommend? Thanks.
Pete

While I can't be specific on the diabetes supplies, I do know that Liberty Medical worked great for a friend while she was on home dialysis. They delivered all the supplies and were very nice people. Didn't cost her a dime. She was also on Medicare. Best wishes to the wife.

With her being type two diabetic, make sure you find out how much in the way of supplies she is authorized each month. Usually the .gov programs do not allow checking of blood sugars as often as an insulin dependent diabetic so you will have to watch the supplies and not go over the allowed amount.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago, I got on a program via the insurance company. They regularly sent me testing supplies. Since I went off of insulin, the doctor cut me back to testing once a day. As low as my blood sugar is, I probably don't need even that.
I'm laid off, no insurance now, but I've still got supplies left from when I was testing four times a day, and between my best friend, his wife, and her deceased father, I've got test strips until the day I die. My friend tests when he feels like it, so he doesn't use half the strips he's allotted.

For type 2 , Medicare normally covers testing equipment such as meters and test strips(100%), ,certain shoes and socks. Syringes and insulan are not covered.

If you are Medicare eligible, I believe you can get the same deal at your local drug store as through the mail delivery outfits. For me, Medicare provides the testing supplies but I still have to pay normal co-pays for medications. You might check with your local pharmacist before you sign up with a mail delivery company if you prefer dealing with local merchants. P0838 is right about shoes. Medicare will pay for a pair of special diabetic shoes every year. I have never liked the idea of having the Government buy my shoes for some reason, but that is just a personal foible.
