Talking Garage Sales can be FUN! - - - pic

I had fun this morning. I managed to snag a heck of a deal on a gaggle of Thompson-Center barrels, actually 14, three with scopes (two Leupold, one Bushnell), eleven sets of reloading dies, four reloading manuals, boxes for the barrels, four sets of Ruger grips, mass quantities of brass and 1k hard-cast .44 SWCs, several sets of T/C manuals and a couple boxes for the Contender pistols themselves. Did I mention a buddy & I split 2k 55 grain Winchester .22 cal. bullets at $4.00/100?

It pays to get their early as I found out a dealer went by after the barrels went home with me and was a bit upset.

Bob

Thumbs up

UNREAL! It's like a pirates bounty. Every garage sale I have been to was all teapots, and old record players or 8-tracks, and junk. You are a lucky man Bob.

WG840,
Thanks...fortunatly, all the goodies I wanted went worth the money...of course when you offer to buy the entire package, the price per barrel gets better...I've done the same at Cabela's a few years ago and was able to improve my barrel selection with no out-of-pocket after selling off the unwanted barrels. Contender barrels are like that.

D.G.,
You know, when we have out Bullet's and Brats, everyone shoots revolvers or semi-autos...the single shots do not get much action!

Garage sails are from the devil!!!! All I ever find is baby clothes and kitchen utencil garbage with the occational old set of worn out tires. Had a guy walk in a gunshow a few years back with a SKB 600 series over and under. Went to the first table he came to and sold it for $300. I stopped him and talked with him for a few minutes and told him that I would have gladly paid him $400 for it. He said he didn't really care, he'd picked it up at a garage sale on the way to the gunshow for $125.
NICE Haul on the Contender stash!!!! Maybe I'll try a garage sale adventure again someday.

I got a call from a buddy who alerted me to the sale...othrwise, I'd never have gone by. The guy selling the stuff is going to come by to shoot before deer season to sight in his deer rifles. I hope to hunt with one of his barrels if I get time to sight one of them in.

Most of the garage sales I go to, either have stuff I've haven't yet or that which I already hauled off to the dump.....

I don't expect to ever see, in my lifetime, a yard sale here in MA with guns or gun components.

I envy you so much...Congrats on your score!

m657,
You just gotta get lucky. My wife always asks folks having garage sales...any guns?

WG,
Thanks. When you and Gregg come out I'll show you the bounty.

Titan,
Sorry about the "state" of affairs there in Mass!

onebad,
Not this one..."mama" was there taking the money. The barrels etc. were inherited and they were disposing of them.

Had one today myself. Spent the morning and sold a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff the county would have charged me $24 to haul off. Joe

There are some rules of life. One is you stop at garage sales. You don't spend much if any time, but you look past the baby clothes and toys. When you see tools or outdoors stuff, you walk toward it. One of the unwritted rules is you always ask if they have any firearms or fishing stuff.

That's doubly true if it women are the only ones in evidence. Often you get estate items, where the poor old guy passed on, and the survivors are just trying to empty the rooms or house.

Old guns, ammo, reloading suppies, or other cool stuff is often offered, usually in the back of the sale, or nearest the garage or house. Its heavy, they don't like carrying it.

You can sometimes get outstanding deals, particularly if its just a clearance kind of thing, where they're trying to generate a few bucks instead of taking it to the dump. Yes, it can be the retaliation for a divorce. I had a buddy who regularly scouted sales. One evening, a friday, he was traveling home. He saw a sale being set up for the next day, and way in the back he thought he saw a toolbox combo. He stopped.

The sign on the tool box (upper and lower) was $1 each. He only had about $90 on him. So he bought all the ratchets, deep well sockets, and all the flat wrenches the mechanic had. It was the divorced wife holding the yard sale. He'd been told dozens of times to get his **** out of her house. She was selling the place, and had about another week to vacate.
He wasn't around, and had no clue what was taking place. My buddy drove home, got all the money he could get together and returned to the sale. The boxes were gone ($1) as were all the tools. At the time, Snap-On tools were selling for $15 or so each new, upward. He felt bad for the poor ex-husband, but felt he would rather get the stuff than someone else.

At the giant 127 Yard Sale, in the past, we'd drive into a farm yard and see tables set up. Often from old doors, or boards across boxes or saw horses. In rural KY, everyone had guns and ammo. Often you could find real bargains on 50 year old ammo that the folks didn't want to fire (they, like others here, were afraid it was inert, dangerous, whatever.) So they were selling it to us at give away prices so we'd take the risks. I still stop when I see any such sale out in the country. I'm guessing that even in urban places, you strike out 10 times for every good score. Its the nature of yard sales, and the hobby.

Thanks. I honestly do not hit every garage sale as Mr. Burg suggests we should. But heck, this one was a dandy so I can now miss a few and not loose a bunch of sleep.

I shot the 222 Rem barrel this afternoon...a 10" ocagonal barrel with a 2x Leupold. It shot like a dream after a bit of scope adjustment.

I also pulled the base/rings (Leupold too) off the 30-30 barrel and put it on my 10" 357 Maximum barrel. It too shot great. I am hunting deer with my Maxi in a week or so. I just need to drop back to 100yds for the final tweek.

One of the barrels was a bust...it began life as a 223 Rem Super 14 Bull Barrel...it was converted to 220 Swift...or that's what I was told by the seller...if this barrel does infact end up at a 220 Swift re-chamber...it's going to be stripped of sights and sold as a novelty...NOT for shooting without some type of re-re-chamber. The 220 Swift is OVER the top for a Contender. Rats! But hey, I'm not bumm'n too much!

perazi,
I will be selling those barrels so drop me a PM or e-mail.

I have to admit, I do not often find such goodies!!

Bob
