What kind of side arm are they using? I have heard some are using .45 ACPs some 9mms . Is there a standard caliber and model?

The standard is the M9 Beretta. I think some units use some modern 1911 variant, and some military investigators use Sig 228s.

Sigp220.45 nailed it. The Sig is called the M11.
