Movie- Josie Wales Outlaw Question
Hi:
Viewing this movie on TV I noticed that the cap and ball revolvers used by Josie's companions (the Indian man and woman) appeared to be Thuer Conversions? Was the time period (1865) correct?

Don't have the movie to check but Thuer conversions were c. 1868-1871. And I believe the Thuers were the first/earliest conversions.

They were regular Richards type conversions that load from the rear. They pop up all over the movie. They weren't around in 1865 but who cares. Close enough for me and the use of standard percussion guns in the gunfights in that movie was really authentic. One of the best. Thuers loaded from the front of the cylinder. If the gun has an ejector rod or loading gate, it loaded from the rear. Whatever, in 1976 when this movie came out they dug up original conversions probably, for this movie.

"I'm an Indian alright but here in The Nations they call us the civilized tribes.
They call us civilized because we are easy to sneak up on. White men have been sneaking up on us for years.
They sneaked up on us and they told us we wouldn't be happy.
They told us we would be happy in The Nations.
So they took away our tribal lands and sent us here.
I had a fine woman and two sons but they all died on the Trail of Tears.
I wore a frock coat to Washington before The War.
We wore them because we belonged to the five civilized tribes.
We dressed ourselves up like Abraham Lincoln.
We got to see the secretary of the interior.
He said, "Boy, you boys sure look civilized."
He congratulated us and he gave us medals for looking so civilized.
We told him about how our tribal lands had been stolen and how our humans were dying.
When we finished he shook our hands and said "Endeavor to Persevere!!"
They stood us in a line John Jumper, Chili McIntosh, Buffalo Hump, Jim Buckmark, and me, I am Lone Waite.
The newspapers took our picture and said, "Indians vow to endeavor to persevere."
We thought about it for a long time, endeavor to persevere, and when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union."

"Well Mr. Carpetbagger, we got somethin' in this territory called a Missor'a boat ride."
Lone Waite: "I'm gett'n better sneak'n up on you like this. Only an Indian can do something like this."
Josie: "That's what I figured."
Lone Waite: "You figured?"
Josie: "Only an Indian can do something like that."
*Indian woman cocks pistol on Lone Waite*
Lone Waite: "It's not right this $%#@ woman doing something like this to me!"
"Are you going to pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?"
"Dying ain't much of a living."
Grandma: "We're going to show those redskins! No offense."
Lone Waite: "None taken."
Lone Waite: "Now we're really going to show these palefaces somethin'- no offense."
Grandma: "None taken."

It is the only westen movie wich I forgiv that the guns arnt right for the period. O wel second best is The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
The Ugly was messing around in a gunstore with a Galand wich was from 1869. There where a lot of things wrong. But what a movie.
I realy like Clint Eastwood.

OJW. My all time favorite movie! Too many great lines to mention them all. Movies like that have a way of costing me $$$. I have a pair of Walker Colt repros that are WAAAAY too much fun to shoot. Had the OJW bucket holsters made for them as well. Yep, movies sure can separate a man from his money. Clint has cost me a bunch, and don't even get me started on "Quigley Down Under". That movie set me back 2K!

Maybe this is a dumb question. But how do you load a cartridge revolver from the front? (other then with paper cartridges) What holds them in the cyl.?

Clint Eastwood must of had a thang about Missour'a as both Josey and William Money "Came outa Missour'a Missouri "the Outlaw State" can't figure out why? James Brothers, Younger's The Dalton's Qauntrell " And that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard and laid poor Jessie in his grave"and a few more right after the Civil War. I guess we had a few during the depression.....But Outlaw state? Heck there are more killed in St. Louis in a month than got killed during the outlaw years, well maybe 3 months......

To get around Smith's patents, some cartridge guns had to be "Front Loaders". Most of the traditional Black Powder guns were front loaders. I'm sure there are others but I have a Plant that is a "front" loader. The smith I showed it to said it was in firing condition. I asked if he had ammo (Bass Pro Shops)?

Interesting back story to the novel is the life of its author Forrest Carter. AKA Asa Earl Carter, one time speech writer for George Wallace and reputed to be a Klu Klux Klan's member, Asa wrote many acclaimed novels. Perhaps his finest novel, The Education of Little Tree is the culturally sensitive story of a Cherokee indian boy growing up in a white ophanage. As a writer, Asa changed his name to Forrest and as Forrest, denied his true identity in interviews. He was exposed by his own cousin, Dan Carter a history professor.

Senator Lane: They were decently treated. They were decently fed and then they were decently shot.

Carter was a boozing fool, eventually killed in a drunken brawl. This was the film which helped create the "Eastwood Rule" which forbid directors from being replaced by actors in mid film (or something to that effect.) Eastwood fired this movie's original director and took over early on. Orson Welles was a big fan of this film as well. I think it's my favorite Eastwood movie, and a really nice shoot-em-up. My favorite "nap" movie - open the doors and let the cool breeze blow through the house - lay back in the Lazy Boy and letter rip!
