My wife read somewhere today that Wal Mart is selling coffins and urns. Has anybody read this as well? Nothing like undercutting the friendly, local funeral home. What's next, cemetary plots?

I have no respect for funeral homes or undertakers today.
Yes, they should be called undertakers and not the more "politically correct" term of funeral director.
Anyway, there is no law prohibiting folks from burying their loved ones unembalmed in a pine box in all but a state or two- funeral homes would love you to believe otherwise.
Talk about someone making big bucks off of many people that are ill prepared to afford it.

However, I know that undertakers have a rough go of it...they have to go to an accredited school, get certified by the state in which they work, keep their licenses up to date and even go just about anywhere to pick up someone...or what's left of them...in the middle of the night- not easy. I fully realize thatt is our culture that has created the "American funeral" that is to blame and these fellers are just offering their service, skills and knowledge. I just hate the ones that take advantage of a person in mourning to sell them something for way more than they can afford. It makes me ill-tempered just thinking about it. Lawyers get most folks upset...for me it's undertakers.

Anyway...


This does make sense since the Batesville Casket Co. is located in Arkansas. I just wonder when they'll be moving the casket making business to China?

I guess I'll keep my order for the pine box at the cabinet shop- no Chinese casket that costs $30K for me!

Oh,There's laws.Or shall I say rules,for some reason ($) you can't burry someone unembalmed in most (if not all) cemeterys.Then you have to have an approved casket ($). Most places look down on burials on your own land.

I used to drive the truck and had to unload the milk that fed the local Walmarts. I often felt it was going to kill me, or drive me to murder (managers). With that, it comes as no surprise that they would sell coffins. Kind of covers the cradle to the grave......

With the 'no admittance without embalming' rule, Wally World will probably start offering 'do-it-yourself home embalming kits' to go along with the caskets. Then, they will need to add cremation ovens to compliment the urns. If they don't have it, you don't need it.

I wonder if they're special order. Most Chinese are fairly short.

My friend Larry, formerly of "Larry's Casketeria", was in the business of selling caskets before he became disabled and couldn't do it anymore. The funeral homes in this state are required to use a casket not purchased from them if the deceased persons family decides that's what they want to do. A casket is probably the biggest expense of a funeral and the funeral directors did not like Larry at all because he was selling caskets that were as good or better than those purchased from the funeral home for thousands of dollars less.

Jay Leno covered this a few nights ago... he said the only thing that might be more depressing is to buy a casket from Ikea and have to assemble it yourself. I believe that's the funniest thing he's said in the last ten years.

Walmart has already buried hundreds of thousands of American manufacturing jobs, so it seems appropriate they would sell cheap coffins to bury the rest of the American work force.

Amen to that! Too bad it's our own fault for buying all that **** we buy from them that's kept them in business.

Can I get an "amen" to that? AMEN!!

I'm getting toasted and scattered at sea. Rules against that also.

My Father in Law was cremated and put in a Folgers Can(his request) and scattered on the Mississippi.

I can envision "Walcommunes." Communties built arround Walmart complexes where you can buy virtually everything you need from cradle to grave. Work there, spend there, live there, kinda like ""The company store." Some Americans are close to the concept now.

One of Chicago's entrepreneurs wants to convert a giant old building in the heart of the city, to a gigantic storage building for cremation urns. My opinion of the whole funerary industry is the same as snake oil salesmen or gypsy's. Requiring the bereived to supply eats after the funeral makes no sense to me. Must be an ancient policy tied to eating sins.
