Default Over compensation bend of the road

Over compensation bend of the road driver walked away from it. Just walking along road came on it shortly after the occurrence. As luck would have it no other vehicles involved.

Became an observer of the various responders’ law, emergency, vehicle recovery, NC-DOT and etcetera you come to appreciate the volunteers. It’s rather amazing some of the equipment volunteer fire companies have.

How ya gonna 'splain that to the boss
Reminds me of years back going duck hunting. We were traveling along a head lane with a canal on the side and came across three men on thrie haunches smoking cigarettes talking among theirselves and staring into the canal. Looking towards where they were looking one could see the right front and rear wheeels of a large tractor above the water-everything else was submerged. Then we saw the pick up truck coming like a bat out of hell and from the looks on the men's faces assumed that the truck held the boss-knowing the boss, we decided the best thing to do was to leave NOW and hear the story later

I did something similar in a tractor trailer loaded with milk. The LEO said he had never heard a driver admit it was his own fault. Alway a story about a animal that jumped out or the phantom motorist that no one else saw. The whole nearby town turned up to help with the clean up. That is after it was known we were giving away the ice cream before it melted.

Yeah, I understand it killed most if not all of them! There are some huge smelly hog farms about 40 miles to the west of us far out in the boonies. The guy was turning to enter the freeway and I guess the hogs ran to one side. In the same spot a year or two ago I saw a truck going on and his trailer wheels lifted up a good 3 feet! He came back down okay, but I bet he had to take the next off ramp to do a cleanup job!

That's one of the many reasons I don't haul livestock. They move unexpectedly.

Dennis, any hint on how long this guy had been driving? Is this a regular route for coal trucks? If the guy is a rookie, or if this is a new road for him, he may have gotten overconfident and simply have been driving too fast for the road. That happens far too often for my comfort.

Barb, from what I seen and also have heard, in a tip over like that, I belive the pigs panic, roll over and die of their own weight, strangle and also just die of fright.
I wish I would have hung around to see how they handle the aftermath.
I dont know if they butchered them on the spot to save the meat or just haul them off to burn and bury or what?
That particular exit north end of cedar city mile 62 north on I-15 is built wrong. I belive the on ramp going south is graded or "cambered" wrong. Right there is also a huge "Loves" truck stop. I live about a mile from it. I bet "Truckmeup" must have been there?

There's a bunch of hogs in that picture standing up and walking around. It might have killed a bunch in the wreck, but it sure didn't get all of'em.

It appears to be a “Coal Bucket” but its not. The truck was hauling asphalt. I guess time is money because they run those trucks close to full open. The driver looked to be thirty something. This isn’t a regular route for those trucks. Normally we have log haulers.

I know the area, but haven't been through there in quite a while. I didn't know there was a Love's there. If the ramp is slanted the wrong way, and the driver was going a little too fast, the pigs are going to move to one side. Then you get a big mess, and the driver gets a preventable accident on his record.

Merril, if you're that close to Love's, I'll send you a message next time I'm through there and buy you a cup of coffee.

Dennis, the stick trucks aren't any better. You're right, time is money. One more load a day can make or break an owner/operator. There's a fine line between "Get-er-Done" and driving unsafely.

I'm thinking first come first served
Throw one in the back of the suburban, stop off for a couple of six packs on the way home-call up Beauetienne and have what we call down here "Le Boucherie"

Truckemup97. Sure thing! They just built that Loves about two years ago. Many trucks are always there. I am retired and if not messing around, home most of the time. Loves is on the east side of exit 62. That truck lost it on the otherside, the SB exit. Our area has a LOT of unmarked hot rods!

truckemup97..Do you remember a load of hogs turning over near Miami OK many years ago? Local law, highway workers, and county officials put out the call that it was time for a BBQ. Insurance company filed charges against a bunch of them over the salvaged piggies. No such thing as a free lunch.

Interesting photo of the asphalt hauler. In my previous life, I did traffic crash reconstruction. Looking at the photo, I tend to agree with Truckemup97. It looks like the truck was approaching the cuve too fast and the driver panic braked, causing the rear end to slide to the outside of the curve. It looks like the front end hit the dirt embankment on the inside of the curve, which probably induced the rollover. Overcorrection crashes most often go off the road on the outside of the curve. A look at the marks on the roadway before the rollover would give a much better idea of the sequence. Looks like a busy few hours for a number of people in any case. As to the photo of the loose hogs, I thought that was what the MP-5's were issued for!

"I can't even imagine having to chase down a truckload of screaming pigs!"

I helped chase chickens in the middle of I-20/59 in Bessemer, Alabama one night. That ain't no fun either. A tractor-trailer hauls a LOT of chickens.

We had a chicken truck roll over just about a half mile from the school a few years back. Seemed like the lunchroom served some kind of chicken dish three times a week for a couple of months after that.

I don't remember that one, but I saw one just after it turned over on I-40 in Midwest City, OK, right in front of Tinker AFB. He took a curve too fast, laid it over on the center wall and tore the trailer open. Big mess and several other accidents as cars and trucks hit escaping pigs.

The most amazing sight I have seen was when I was driving on the Nimitz Freeway in Hayward when right in front of me a Semi came sailing over the center divider going the opposite direction and landed on its side in the lane in front of me. Amazingly no one was injured.
