My father in law passed away last week. We buried John at Fort Sam Houston Wednesday. John was a soldier serving as a radio operator in the pacific aboard a ship. He delievered the news that D-Day was occuring to the ship captain. The captain had John get on the ship PA system to announce it to the crew. John got done with the Army, dissambled his 1917 Enfield and stuffed it in his duffel bag and went home.
Fast forward to last night. We are sitting at the dinner table and some one mentioned they could not find "that old rifle that dad had". I recounted that John told me that "He gave it to his best friend for a trade for a charter arms revolver caliber 38, 15 years ago"
I did not have the heart to tell family the value of an enfield that was only used on the range and to shoot at Japanese kamikazy planes.
No one knew what guns he had or were interested until they started deviding the property. His best friend died 5 years ago and the oldest sister is going to try to get the enfield back. I told her "good luck".
Lastly, they have pictures with him on horseback with a S&W6 inch frame in a holster. I never saw it and am sure it got passed on to someone years ago.
