Default "SHANE". What kind of gun is this in that film?

In Shane Van Heflin uses what appears to be a 6" Colt Lightning. But it has a square butt. This could be a studio modification so actors could shoot fast DA while making it look like they have a SA. Elmer Keith modified a Colt Thunderer this way, too. There was a Spanish copy of a Colt SAA but smaller and in .38. I have a pic. of one somewhere and will post it if I find it. I think this Shane gun is one of those. What do you think?

I think the picture is too dark to really tell.

To be honest, I never noticed that in the film "Shane"? I'll have to watch it more closely next time!
I think sort of the same thing may have happened in the shoot out finale of "Hombre" as well? John Russell (Paul Newman) despite carrying a 1873' SAA for the entire film, during the last few rounds being exchanged with the Mexican bandito (after Newman's character is mortally wounded and on his back) a double action Colt magically appears in his fist?

I cant tell at all from the picture, but one modification was to take, say a colt offical police and mount a fake ejector houseing to it to make it appear like a colt saa at a distance. For people with small hands like ladys, the smaller grip let them handle the gun more beliveable.

You're right, and it was a good closeup in Hombre. Try this one. Freeze frame Butch Cassidy where our heroes mow down those Bolivian bandits. Redford did a fine job fanning his single action. But Paul Newman is fanning his hand over a DA while he triggers off the rounds. Marlon Brando in One Eyed Jacks tried to sneak a DA past us, too. And there's lots more of this in my ample mental archives of completely useless information!

The directors probley think that 99.9% of the people watching their films arent highly educated in guns of the period, and they might be right. So they go with whats impressive to the mass`s. It`s with many other things hollywood too. The swearing on screen in modern movies is another thing that gripes me. I had jobs and rubbed shoulders with real tough guys all my life. Yet when hollywood depicts them they feel that every other word has to be -F- etc. When I worked and knew the real deal guys, you probley heard maybe 2% of the swearing that hollywood trys to portray! I say its because the directors and writers are low moraled and a ungodly bunch. AND I once worked security in hollywood, for whatever my opinion is worth!

My wife says the same thing about Hollywood non period correct costumes. Films are made to fool you.
