M-1 Garand
Anyone know of a good book that explains how to maintain the M-1 Garand?

Sir, FM 23-5 is still good and is available online in various places. Scott Duff also has a book on Garand care and feeding. There are also books on accurizing, collector aspects, history, and on and on. Scott Duff's Web site is www.scott-duff.com.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Except loading it by the military instructions will guarantee you "M1 thumb"
Nearly broke my thumb that way.
Dad straightened me out on loading it, and many other issues.

If you get on the CMP site, there are a number of technical articles on the Garand. The best one shows how to detail strip the M1 and reassemble again.
There are also instructions there on proper lubrication and stock maintenance.
There is a special tool to disassemble the bolt, but it is easily done with a flat blade screwdriver. Difficult to explain, but someone can show you in less than 10 seconds. Once you know how, the special tool will never be used again.
When you are done, make sure the gas plug is torqued, not just hand tight. It will loosten when firing and open your groups it not tightened properly.

I have most of them, including Duff's and Kuhnhausen's books. My standby, though, is Hatcher's 'Book of the Garand'. Every time I take a rear sight assembly apart I pull it out to refresh my memory on the reassembly procedure. I like the others but Hatcher has 98%+ of everything you will ever need.

Duff's "M1 Garand: Owner's Guide" is my favorite.
