Question New S&W .44 magnums

Talked to my friend today and he wanted to get a new 3 or 4 '' bbl .44. Does anyone have a new one,if so how do you like it? We both know about the ''lock'', so lets not start another post on it,LOL! The bottom line is,should he get a new one or wait for a good used one? Thanks

Don't have one myself. My .44 starts with an R and I got it 20 years ago. But my buddy just got a 629-1 with an 8 3/8ths barrel. Had less than 100 rnds thru it. He got it for about 1/2 the price of a new one. Me, I like new guns, but it's hard to beat a like new for 1/2 the price.
But it also depends on why there are new models (-2,-3,...,-5, etc.) If it was for a reason not just cosmetic, you've got to evaluate that too.

Wink

Most used magnuns show very little wear. Good deals can always be had on a good used handgun. Buy a 629 if you want a lower maintenance 44 mag that you can carry without to much worry about the finish.

Even Gunbroker Mod 29's are cheaper than a new one!

My too sents. Worth just what you paid for it.

Personally I would get a older one -2 or -3 and they can be found in very good condition for $800-$900 for the -2 and a little cheaper for the -3 and that should include a presentation case with some nice looking target grips. I don't know how much the new ones cost but they have got to be that or more, but it's his choice and as long as he is happy with it thats all that counts.

I'm with your buddy, I'd love to get a 3-4" .44Mag for a carry gun. It's my favorite round but my unmentional (R. S.Bh.) shooter is too big. For carry I'd prefer a new 329 or stainless 629, but just to have one I would go for a pre-lock 29.

Just my $0.02

I wanted a 3 inch 629 and finally got everything together and ordered one right from Smith. They say they don’t make them In 3 inch anymore but I was able to get this one as one of the “emergency survival kits”. I don’t care about any of the rest of the stuff but I didn’t want to compromise and get a 4.
The day I picked it up it was to late to take it out so my friend and I just kind of fondled it and wiped it down. We both thought the trigger was horrible, heavy as a truck.
I figured I might as well replace the rebound spring right off the bat so we opened it up and then the stones found there way out and the next thing you know we smoothed everything down like you would have to do to a Ruger, put in a 11 lbs rebound spring and a factory 625 main, champhered the charge holes, hosed it down with brake cleaner, oiled it up and done in less than a hour.
I think it is the lightest, smoothest Smith I have ever pulled! We were just hoping it would have enough spring to fire. The next day was the local Thursday night IDPA match so a couple hours ahead of time I shot a couple dozen bowling pin loads. (240 SWC cast over 5 gr. Titegroup)
The finish was a dull gray that was easily fixed with polish and a buffing wheel.
It’s a honey. I then shot a few heavy loads and it is not a beast with bear loads either. A couple hours later I shot the Thursday night match with no failures, so I love this thing. I think this is my favorite handgun of all!
Last February I used it to shoot the S&W Indoor Nationals IDPA match with 44SPL loads in SSR expert. I hadn’t been practicing so I knew I couldn’t win but I shot a great gun and I was the only guy with a 44. I did get bragging rights!
