Default Anybody know anything about Hawes Revolver?

I picked up a single action revolver recently that I don't know anything about. It's marked "Hawes Firearms Co. Los Angeles, CA. Made in Western Germany by JP SAUER @ SOHN".
It's a .357 Mag and has a 6" Bbl. and fixed sights.
It was amusing the way I got it. Friend said he bought it at auction and wanted my opinion on it. I was in my car and took out base pin and set it on the dashboard. It rolled into defroster vent. Not wanting to tear apart car to get it I offered owner twice what he paid ( $50 ) for it. I found a base pin on-line ( $24 including shipping ) so I have a nice gun for $124 total spent. An old price book I have says it might be worth $150 tops. It shoots pretty good. Wonder if anybody out there has one or knows anything about them.

Mine was a .44. Well built, good accuracy and tight lock-up. It shot a bit to the right. A good value in a SAA clone.

Here's their web site: Sauer: Sauer & Sohn

From wikipedia they've been in buisness since 1751. You may find some collector value in the 'Made in Western Germany' mark. That would put the manufacture date to after WWII but before reunification.

Forgot to mention on right side of Bbl is marked "Western Marshal". The book I have, Gun Digest Book of Modern Gun Values, copyright 1996 lists it as manufactured between 1968 and 1980. Good condition $135. I kinda like it.

About 30 years ago a buddy had one in 357 mag. It was a well constructed import well thought of in those days. Don't hardly ever see any the last few decades.

I had a 357 like yours back in the early 70's. The gun was ok other than the trigger.

Talk about a hair trigger......you couldn't touch the trigger without firing it.

I didn't keep it very long....Maybe others are not that way. That was the only one I've owned

Just be aware that the Hawes Revolvers DO NOT have a hammer block like most S&Ws. That means if the chamber under the hammer is loaded any blow on the hammer can fire that cartridge. Hawes was sued so many times over the lack of this safety feature that they quit importing into the US. They are a well made SA revolver and are available in other calibers besides the .357.

If you are carrying a Hawes you should do exactly what the early users of the Colt 1873 Army did; have an unloaded chamber under the hammer. ........... Big Cholla

Plus one for Big Cholla's post about no hammer block! I have a Western Marshall in .44 mag that is a very nice revolver and a good shooter. These gun's do not get the respect they deserve. Enjoy your Hawe's!

I think I remember reading someplace that the parts on the well made Hawes were interchangeable with the Colt SAA...I also passed up buying one chambered in 22 LR that I regret even today. At less than $100.00, I wondered what was wrong with it and who is Hawes...oh well!

Thanks, guys. Yes I'm well aware of the no-hammer block situation. I'm an avid reader of Skeeter Skelton. Always keep "5 beans in the wheel"!
