Jim Supica is now director of the NRA firearms museum. I'd buy one, but I suspect he's busy.

If he's busy, let's form a committee and write our own version.........just a thought.

I'm sure that that position keeps him busy. And might add, if anyone gets a chance, the museum is well worth the time. Let's hope that someone steps in to work on a newer version, or even an addendum to SCSW3 covering info since its publication.

I'd buy #4 in a heartbeat. #3 is one of my favorite books, and my most used.

I vote no for another book. I bought #3, started buying S&W's, joined S&WCA, and ended up getting between 15 and 20 guns in 2009. I've already bought my 1st one for 2010.

I'm thrilled!
The first time in years I haven't started this kind of thread. But I fully support your efforts. Good luck with it.
The problem seems to be Roy doesn't seem to be publishing these days. Worse, Jim and Rick did such a great job on versions 1, 2, and 3 it will be a tall order to write a sequel. Most of our readers won't be real interested in buying a book that only details changes since 2005 or so. While we've learned some new details about the older guns, but not really enough to fill a book.
Besides, you can just spend your time here and have a pretty good interactive source. Better still, you can often get conflicting answers. Our posters here may be opinionated, but we also have a huge resource in guns to reference for the details. When someone asks about a gun, there are literally dozens of us who can drag out numerous examples to view or photograph. Our dispersed collections would greatly exceed any corporate or museum collection.
Maybe at some point our experts commentary will progress to the point where it rivals the published texts.

You're right, Dick. There alot of info available here on the forum. But I'd buy SCSW 4, or whatever it might be called, in a minute. I like having the reference material handy on the bookshelf along with all of my other S&W printed material.

My take is that other than pricing and new model introductions, there is probably not enough new info or correction needed to really justify a 4th Ed. To a certain extent, I'd be afraid it would look like we were just trying to drain bucks out of collector's pockets to buy a newer edition that really doesn't have much more to offer.
I have mixed feelings on the pricing info. To me, the value estimates were just an excuse to get the book published. To the publisher, I think the values are the main thrust. As with any price guide, the values are not writ in stone, and tend to go stale very quickly.
IF there were to be another edition, my tendency would be to go back to a very early idea that Rick & I have been pushing since the 1st Ed --
Make it a two volume set.
Volume One - big fat color hardback with NO value information. Basically what you have now, with more and bigger pictures filling the space that's freed up by taking out the pricing. (I think we kinda hit some type of printer's size limitation with the current volume, making it difficult to do a substantially bigger book). Update this no more often than every 10 years, if that often.
Volume Two - Slim pocket sized price guide with VERY basic info on the models and variations, along with value estimates. Update this every 2 to 4 years.
And speaking of the NRA National Firearms Museum.....
a lot of our time and effort this year have gone into developing a new website www.nramuseum.com
The front end of this site is up and running in a beta version, and a lot of substantive info will be added over the course of this year. Feedback is welcome, of course.
Just thinkin out loud -- Jim

Still haven't gotten the West Publishing company "pocketparts" memories out of you eh Jim???? One of the lasting afflictions of Law School-you can never get it all out of you no matter how hard you try.

Jim, it is good to see you are still keeping an eye on us and good to hear from you. Missed seeing you at the last Tulsa show.
I like the idea of a small book of values every few years.
Take care.
