Default Any good westerns coming out?

Personally I have had enough of goofy comedies and sci-fi flicks with blue people and all sorts of special effects. I want to see a decent western come out. Any on the horizon??

Did you ever see Robert B. Parker's Appaloosa?

One of the best westerns I ever saw...that didn't have the Duke in it.

Maybe RBP's Resolution and Brimstone will make it to the silver screen as well.

Has a good western even come out since 1992's Clint Eastwood classic Unforgiven?

A "good western" is going to be a matter of opinion. I haven't seen a really good western in a long time and the "1992 classic" was one of the worst cases of liberal Hollywoods subliminal anti gun brain washing flicks I've ever seen. After watching the re-make of '3:10 to Yuma' I'm not even going to waste my time watching any more modernized western classics.

I had read the book first and loved the movie, except I never had Virgil Cole smiling in the book. And in the movie, the gun reports were a little weak. Great movie tho and all 3 of Parker's books were very good reading.

Excellent movies in my opinion. Duvall excels in the older cowboy roles...

If you'll recall, he also shakes hands a few times in the movie, but he never shakes anybody's hand in the books. "No reason for anybody to get a hold of you" is what he always says. But I thought the movie was awesome!

Of course, NOBODY has read more of RBP's stuff than me.

Robert Duvall is one of my very favorite actors. He's masterful at all of his roles, but I think his heart is in the westerns.

Kevin Costner on the other hand sucks at being a cowboy. He's better as a baseball player.

Of course, and as always, YMMV.

I could never see the big fuss about Unforgiven. It did nothing for me. I guess Hollywood was thrilled thinking Clint was apolgizing for killing so many people in his other westerns by his "killin' speach" in this movie. And what bothers me about Broken Trail is Thomas H. Church has no front sight on his 1866 carbine.
Yep. An entire four hour movie doesn't meet my approval because of that! ( I'm kidding a little there)

I'm a big RBP fan myself, re-reading some Spenser stuff now...

That being said, we are hijacking the OP's thread, sorry David.

Back to the OP, I know of no new westerns coming. We may want them, but I bet they just don't make money. Seems like that Westerns are a labor of love for someone (i.e. Ed Harris in the afore mentioned Appaloosa). Hopefully more will be made, but I ain't holding my breath....

The Coen brothers start filming their adaptation of True Grit in March. Jeff Bridges as Rooster, Matt Damon as LeBouef, and Josh Brolin as Tom Cheney. No word yet on who will play Mattie Ross or Lucky Ned Pepper.

I'll bet I'm in the minority here - hell, I may be the ONLY one - but I am really looking forward to it.

If you've got Netflix try this Australian instant to tv movie. Bad *** outback stuff.

I wish the Coen brothers would die a miserable death, then somebody could bury them with a shovel and then bury the shovel!

Of course, I'm kidding...a little bit.

But seriously, I do enjoy many of the Coen brothers films...

O Brother, Where Art Thou? Raising Arizona and Fargo are some hilarious "dark" comedies, but this will give you an example of what type of films they produce. I just feel like they will make an atrocity out of my most beloved movie of all time. I'm not just talking my favorite western or even my favorite John Wayne movie, I'm talkin' my VERY, FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME is True Grit.

The Coens should be ashamed of themselves for trying to redo a sacred masterpiece that True Grit really is. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon? Pssh! Puh-LEEZE!

O Brother, Where Art Thou? Is a favorite of mine. I REALLY think younger audiences could not relate to the tongue in cheek references to depression life and KKK. Too much lack of historical interest as opposed to PC correctness. Fargo is great. Reminds me of that Billy Bob movie where they also killed an officer. SENIOR MOMENT. or is it SENOR WENSES.

I'm a big fan of the Coens and am looking forward to this, too.
The John Wayne movie will always be there. I like the idea of a new take on the story. The Coens combine almost comic characters mixed up with intense graphic violence and get away with it.

To me the last good western was "Quigley down under".

It was a John Wayne type role for Tom Selleck and he pulled it off perfectly. Of course Ol' Tom is a gunny, but the star of the show was:

If you like that movie so much you should buy my "Little Quigley" Shiloh Sharps. That's it in the middle.

I thought Selleck also did a great job in both Crossfire Trail and Monte Walsh. In fact, I think I liked Crossfire Trail better than Quigley Down Under.
