On this date Willie Hoppe defeated Maurice Vigneaux for the world 18.1 balkline championship. He was 18. The title was worth about $50,000.

Although "30 Years of Billiards" written by Mr. Hoppe is not all that interesting to non-billiard players, his account of the match itself is superb.
