Texas Ranger firearms
I keep reading in the Sig catalog that the Texas Rangers and many other departments carry the 226, but they don't state what caliber. Does anyone know what caliber the Texas Rangers carry?

Last I heard, they carry the standard issue SIG that Texas DPS issues, which is in .357 SIG.

While this topic is always open to change and error, the issue weapon is a .357 Sig. That being said, there remains a small bit of lee way with regard to carrying personal weapons. Some of the people who were with the Rangers up until a couple of years ago exercised an option to carry 1911s. One fellow carried a .38 Super in the trunk of his car. He said he liked it because he'd shot through a tree with it. He liked the Sig but said he wished somebody made a Colt type gun in the .357 Sig caliber.

Buy a Colt Delta Elite, swap the barrel for 357 Sig...viola...you have 357 Sig in Colt body...the 10mm mags work fine for 357 and the 40 rounds, or you can get (the very rare) 40 cal Colt mags for around $60 each
I thought that the Rangers were issued the p226 in 357 Sig, but were given the option (for the Rangers, not the rank and file of the DPS), the option to carry a personal sidearm of approved form....not from personal experience, but from conversations with a now retired Ranger.

Current Texas DPS issue is Sig 226 DAK .357 sig. Rangers are allowed to carry a personally owned weapon, normally a 1911A1 of some sort. Colt has made special runs in the past of specially engraved 1911s for the Rangers. I don't know of any Rangers carrying odd ball weapons at the moment but several in the past have carried all sorts to include lugers. If you get down to Waco, Tx you need to stop by the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and check out the weapons. I stop by every chance I get.

Thank you for all of the replies, I thought it was the .357 SIG 226 but wanted to make sure. I priced one out and they sure are expensive.
I hope to get to Texas this year and my goal is to visit the Audie Murphy museum in his hometown and make the Alamo and the Texas Ranger museum.

Like others have said the issued weapon is a Sig 226 in .357 sig, however ALOT of Rangers use 1911's. I ran into one at my local range and chatted him up a bit. He said the Sig was a great weapon, but he had been shooting his 1911's so long he felt more comfortable with it. He carries 8 extra mags O.O
