I may be missing for a while...
Just got off the phone with my company, looks like there is a 90% chance I will be leaving for Haiti the end of next week.
No idea how long I will be there, no clue if I will have any connection with the outside world.
If I go and find the capability to get online... I will pop in with updates.
There are 4 yachts waiting in Naples for us comm guys to hop on and sail over on... looks like we will be sleeping on them.
I am happy for the chance to do something other than send a few bucks or some canned food.
Jim

Be safe man, that is not a place I would want to be without several of my very closest friends.
Starting with my M&P, AR, my shotgun, my backup, no make it two back ups. Lots of ammo, oh yeah and more guns.

I am going with a few people I know and trust... one of them ex airborne.
I REALLY wish I could get some protective devices there also.
I may be able to get a machete while there... they may frown on me bringing over a pocket gun.

If you have some cheap or really beat up handgun, you might consider it. If you get in a bind, pitch it over the side.

The telecommunications there are in a shambles... took 3 days for a land line call from there to the US to become clear enough for a prez to prez call.
I will be on a crew trying to get basic dependable comm up and running.
Not as noteworthy as a doctor or something like that... but every little bit to get things up and running helps.

Also, since I know we have member with a wide knowledge base here... where is the cheapest place to get a camelback and a good inexpensive back pack?
I have been out of work for around a month and need to look into getting a few things as cheap as possible.
Thanks in advance for the info.
I know I will be seeing, smelling, experiencing... things that I dont want to.
But someone has to. Trust me when I say I dont want to experience the horrors over there.
But there are people in need, and I have a skill I can use to help.
I honestly dont know if I could live with myself if I turned down this chance.
I have helped people all my life, usually its just in passing and they may not remember it the next week.
But I remember it.
I did the same thing in New Orleans, helped to get the communications down there back up.
And these people need it as much as any I have known of.
Say what you want about the government of Haiti... the average citizen there has pretty much no say in the country.
THEY are the ones that need the help.
Just my opinion, and I dont expect anyone else to totally agree.
Jim

WalMart has Camelback clones for $15. I'd get two and a repair kit if I were going to Haiti....
I saw things I never thought I'd see while helping with Katrina. I can't imagine what you're going to see. Be careful, be safe, and come back home.

Set up a ham radio and get the heck out of there.
Oh, wait, you said prez to prez, it'll take years to train them how to push that little button.
Good luck and stay safe.

Better make sure your shot card is current. Maybe some salt tablets, and water purification tablets. And, for Pete's sake, don't leave anything
hanging out to be a target! There's only one of you, and you can't be replaced.

I am used to working bad parts of the US and low key/stealth is second nature, thanks for the reminder tho.
Also planning on anti malaria pills, LOTS of imodium, DEET bug repellent, long sleeve shirts, etc.
Coming back in 1 piece to my family is my highest priority.

Thanks for the link, I will have to look into that later.
Its all I can do right now to try and get the funds together to get there and get the survival supplies I will need while I am there.

It is very admireable what you are doing. I called my NG unit and told them that if they send anybody there I wanted to go. Keep your situational awareness up and come home safe brother.

Good luck and keep safe.
A couple of decent pocket knives and a belt knife, if they won't let you have something with more range.
Also remember that voodoo actually works down there.

Pocket knives, belt knife, machete...
Possibly a longer handled camp hatchet.
I refuse to be unarmed.
On a separate note, I discovered today how a J frame disappears in the pocket of my work jeans...

Years ago about '80 or so I knew a chopper pilot that flew to Haiti and got busted for a bottle of shampoo!I guess they didn't want to bust up a dandruff ring?Cost a lot of money to buy his way back home.
Don't get your self in trouble,
