Chevy Truck HELP! 2002 silverado Z71
2002 silverado Z71
Ok so I am in BNCOC at Ft. Eustis and the Voltage gage stopped working in my truck. It does not move. The Batt and charging system must be OK or I would be walking by now. No check engine lights or trouble codes. I am going to have it checked before I head home next week. I don't have a lot of time to mess with it here. I can only miss 4 hrs of class. I would rather not miss any.
2002 silverado Z71
If the volt gage is bad do I have to change the whole inst. cluster?
Anyone ever had one repaired (rebuilt).
How do you even check just the volt gage?

If it's charging & all else is O.K., I'd just drive it home. Hopefully with someone else around as you go.

If the volt meter reads 0, then you might be runnung on just what is left in the battery. Try to borrow a volt meter to check battery voltage, with the engine off, it should read about 12.5V. With the engine running at about 1500 rpm's (fast idle), it should read in the upper 13V's if the alternator is charging.
Good luck

I'd second the idea of verifying the battery voltage and charging system. You can buy a Chinese made voltmeter at Harbor Freight (or some place like it) for $10.
If you take the instrument cluster out, check the ground going to the voltmeter. Grounds are a common problem in instrument clusters.

02 Silverados have a sealed instrument cluster, supposed to be repaired only by certified repair centers. Just cost me $515 to get a oil pressure gage replaced. Good luck.

For an auxillary set of gauges you can not beat Scanguage. Around $150. when I bought mine. Plug it into the OBD11 and leave it in.

Autometer makes a volt gauge that plugs in to your cig lighter/power port. They aren't cheap but you don't have to pay shop fees.
Don't have the part # anymore but you could call Summit Racing and they can find it for ya.

You are on the right track. If your battery was actually no volts your truck wouldn't run.
I would have a mechanic troubleshoot the problem before I spent money on new parts.

If you have under 100,000 miles your dealer will warranty its replacement. GM had a bunch of issues with the clusters in those trucks. Had my '03 Avalanche cluster replaced last year.

Less than 70K. I will check into that.
Looks like the recall is for 03 and up.

If you have no warranty you can check whether or not it has some kind of sending unit, but your options are taking the whole unit out and spraying some electrical parts cleaner and checking connectors, and if that doesn't work and you need a new/used one check eBay or the salvage yards you can save a great deal of money that route.

Until I leave Fort Eustis next Fri all I can do is research. There is a garage on post self service center that should have most of what I need to check it. If not I can slip out the back gate to advance to get the Batt. and alt. checked before I take off back to SC where I know some people who know some people who know some stuff.

A voltmeter is the least needed gage on the dash. As noted, it starting and having bright lights tells you everthing is OK. Depending on your nature, you could just live with it.
The problem with the instrument clusters is that each gage has a servo motor that can go out. The servo motors can be replaced if you are good at soldering electronics. There are places online that will sell you a repaired instrument cluster exchange.

Tell them you want it replaced anyway. If the dealer won't do it, call GM and make some noise. They know they have a problem, make them fix it.

My experience too ~ half the lights went dark. They remove your entire panel, overnight it someplace for a replacement.
BTW ~ if that little "multi-function" switch goes bad that operates your turn signals, dimmer switch, wipers, etc.......expect that to be in the $400 range too.
