Default Indoor,Outdoor Range Survey

I'm working on a Business Plan an need a little help. The reason I'm asking for help is there are no local ranges here indoor or outdoor that i can collect information on.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range?

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor?

Is the range private, club or public?

How far do you travel to the range?

What is supplied at the range ?

What do you like or dislike about the range?

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)?

What is your gender?

What is your home state?

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range?

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

What would you like the range to supply?

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

I travel about 1hr an 40min one way to use a outdoor public range that is only 4 lanes wide 100 yards long if i can get on the range i spend about 6hrs there (NO RESTROOMS AT THE RANGE)

Thanks for all the help!!

I can tell you this,

my range is private, I walk about 100 yards to get to it (right out my back door), there is a bench that i set up, it cost me nothing. I use it at least twice a week. The farthest I would drive would be the local range in town, about 3 miles away. How much would I pay? About $35 annually. To me there is nothing worse than trying to drive to a range, make time for it only to find some guy with a brood of whining kids playing around. Or when I am trying to sight in a gun or something some guy walks up next to me and decides now is the time to plenty 20 questions. "What cha shooting? How much did that cost? What are you gonna hunt with that?" No sir, I don't miss having to share a range with someone.

I got to an outdoor range.

There is a 25 yd hand gun, a 100 yd rifle, and a 200 yd rife range.

I travel about .75 miles it take about 3 minutes from my house.

The range supplies, shooting benches, sitting benches, sand bags, trash cans, brass buckets, and target stands. Oh and the two rifle ranges have an overhead pavillion.

I like the location of the range, I sometime dislike the other people using the range, mainly due to safety or the lack there of. There is no range officer.

I would love to spend around 40 hours a week at a range, but thats not gonna happen.

I would also like the range to have disposable ear protection, cuz I always forget mine.

I pay $50 for a hunting club, and the range is apart of that fee.

I try to make it to the range once a week for a couple of hours, but I usually only make it twice a month.

I'm a 25 yr old male in Western Maryland.

I would travel no more than 25 miles to a range, mostly b/c I have plenty of places to shoot that are not "ranges" ie back woods, down in the hollow, over by the old tunnel, by the ol' mine shaft.....

Again I wouldn't be willing to pay much money to use a range much for the same reasones I wouldn't be willing to travel far.

An indoor range would be different, I would be willing to travel a little farther and spend a little more money, but would only be benecficial to me on rainy days.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range? Outdoor

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor? A couple acres? We've got about 20 lanes for pistols on two separate ranges, a rifle range and a skeet range.

Is the range private, club or public? It's a private range.

How far do you travel to the range? 30 miles

What is supplied at the range ? Cover in a few areas, multiple steel targets for pistol shooting, a large grill, benches and tables.

What do you like or dislike about the range? The distance is a bit of a pain, but everything is at least 30 minutes from me.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? $300/yearly

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? I usually spend about 6 hours a week.

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)? 24

What is your gender? Male

What is your home state? South Carolina

Well, I have 164 acres of woods surrounded by more woods. I have a 30 yard pistol range and a 300 yard rifle range. I have a covered bench for the rifle range. I like it because it's all mine and my brother's. I shoot handguns weekly.. on average 3 or 4 times a week. Rifles 2 or 3 times a month.

BUT that doesn't help you! So.. I'll answer your questions using a range I go to with some buddies:

Outdoor

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor?
25yard pistol: room for 8 shooters at once50 yard rifle: one shooter at a time
100 yard rifle: 12 shooters at a time
200 yard rifle: 6 shooters at a time

Is the range private, club or public?
Public

How far do you travel to the range?
25 miles (If I didn't have my own range, there are two closer, but they're gun clubs and I'm cheap!)

What is supplied at the range ?
Nothing much: Trash cans, tables at pistol range, covered shooting benches at rifle ranges, wooden target mounts.

What do you like or dislike about the range?
Like: free, decent amount of lanes.
Dislike: Far from me, the target mounts are often nearly disintegrated, some people don't know range safety/ etiquette.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
Free

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
This range: once every two months for about 2 hours.

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)?
18-25 (24)

What is your gender?
M

What is your home state?
Pennsylvania

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel to use a range?
I find 25 miles to be too far for regular shooting. 15 would be my max.

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
Sorry, I've never paid, so I don't have any idea. Not a lot though. I can't see paying more than $100 for a year.

What would you like the range to supply?
Free ammo! But seriously.. at a free range I wouldn't expect much of anything. At a paid range: paper targets would be nice, foam ear buds for those who forget ear protection.

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
At my range: a lot of time.
At the range 25 miles away: a few hours every month to 2 months.
At a closer range: I'd probably aim for 1 to 2 hours weekly.

I travel about 1hr an 40min one way to use a outdoor public range that is only 4 lanes wide 100 yards long if i can get on the range i spend about 6hrs there (NO RESTROOMS AT THE RANGE)

I am so sorry to hear this!

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range?
I had a wonderful private indoor range I used to go to before we moved up here where there is a public outdoor range.

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor? The indoor range was 50'. The outdoor range has 100 yard rifle on one side of the berm, 50 yard rifle and 25 yard pistol on the other side of the berm.

Is the range private, club or public?

How far do you travel to the range? The indoor one was a couple of miles from where I worked. The outdoor one here was 20 minutes away.

What is supplied at the range ? The indoor one rented guns, sold ammo, targets, earplugs.

What do you like or dislike about the range? The indoor one was climate-controlled, had a range officer, electric target movers, and closed-circuit cameras, which were great. The outdoor one is uncontrolled in all aspects so there's a lot of 'yahoo' types.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? The private indoor was $85/year at the time, but you could rent hourly.

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? When I went to the indoor range, it was 2 hours/week.

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)? 45-55

What is your gender? Female

What is your home state? PA

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range? 20 minutes

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? It depends on the facilities and what's offered.

What would you like the range to supply? Targets, earplugs

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Minimum once a week, for an hour.

I travel about 1hr an 40min one way to use a outdoor public range that is only 4 lanes wide 100 yards long if i can get on the range i spend about 6hrs there (NO RESTROOMS AT THE RANGE) Definitely
a restroom.

I like a nice solid bench I can lay my stuff out on, free of splinters.

Boy, that's a lot of questions.
I belong to a member owned (good-old-boy) gun club. Dues are $100 a year. 100 yd rifle range (you can set your targets at 25, 50, 75, or 100) and a 25 yd pistol range. It has a very active trap and skeet membership and an indoor pistol range (25 yds, i think) that I seldom use. Benches and a roof over both pistol and rifle firing points. Very nicely maintained. Five minutes from my home and I'm in the middle of an east coast major metropolis. Wooden target frames are usually made by members and available, otherwise you need to bring all your supplies.

I also maintain a membership in a indoor commercial pistol range. $200 a year for unlimited shooting time. Non-membership costs are about $15/ hour. Nothing supplied but the shooting lane, but the attached gun shop has anything a shooter would need: ammunition, targets, rental guns. Clean and well maintained. 25 minutes from my home. I like it because sometimes people show up with a brood of kids and its good to see the tradition being passed along, and sometimes people will stop and ask me questions and I enjoy being able to share my knowledge and skills.

I shoot two or three times a week...I'm usually at the indoor range one evening and one weekend morning. When the weather is nice I make it to the rifle range once a week or so. In the summer with the long days I enjoy being able to pop over after work for an hour or so before dinner. And I have found that I usually stay for about an hour and a quarter, whether its the pistol range or the gun club.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range? Outdoor.

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor? Accommodates 10@ 7-25 and 50 yds.; 10 @ 100 yds.; 3 @ 200 yds.

Is the range private, club or public? Private.

How far do you travel to the range? 266 miles round trip.

What is supplied at the range ? Space to shoot with post and wires on which to hang targets.

What do you like or dislike about the range? Distance.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Cost is $80/yr. per person. Family membership is $180/yr. Matches are $2/each.

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? When I go I make a day of it. I always stay at least four to five hours. I commonly go about once a month, depending on my work schedule.

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)? I am in the 45-55 age bracket.

What is your gender? Male.

What is your home state? Georgia.

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range? Maybe 200 miles round trip.

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? In the past I've paid fees at pubic ranges of $5-8/hr when I lived in New Orleans. I have no idea what is now the normal fee for a public range.

What would you like the range to supply? If indoor, I would want it to be well ventilated; well maintained/clean; attention to safety of participants w/o a Nanny mentality; cardboard available for use... targets available for purchase... no restriction of bringing your own targets.

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? About what I now spend. It would very much depend upon my work schedule. Also important to me would be the fellowship shared with fellow shooters.

I travel about 1hr an 40min one way to use a outdoor public range that is only 4 lanes wide 100 yards long if i can get on the range i spend about 6hrs there (NO RESTROOMS AT THE RANGE)

Thanks for all the help!!

best of luck.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range? Outdoor

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor? 10-20 acres, usually only shoot upwards of 120 yards, but is possibility of reconfiguring for more.

Is the range private, club or public? private

How far do you travel to the range? 500 yards from front door

What is supplied at the range ? berm, free parking

What do you like or dislike about the range? lack of targets, I really need to build/buy some more

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Well until my father get's greedy $0

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Only shoot in summer and it is usually about 2-3 hours bi-weekly

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)? 25-35

What is your gender? M

What is your home state? Maine

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range? 15-20 miles

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Wouldn't pay for an outdoor range, but would pay $10/hr for indoor.

What would you like the range to supply? Heat, and bathrooms, and would be neat to be able to rent different firearms too.

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? Probably 2-3 hours bi-weekly in the winter months, possibly some during rainy summer months.

I also travel about 1hr an 40min to the other outdoor range I shoot at, with my in-laws. Have toyed around with the idea of starting an indoor range too, as there are only 3 in the state, 2 you have to be a club member, and the other is several hours away. Am situated between two clubs that don't have an indoor range at either.

Good luck with your research.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range?
outdoor

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor?
pistol range: 50 yards, ~approx 30 positions split in 2 independent halves. target stands at 25 and 50 yards
rifle range: 100 yards, bench only, shooting through holes in a while (pretty worthless)
2 skeet fields
2 trap fields (also supports international)
1 archery range

Is the range private, club or public?
private

How far do you travel to the range?
25 minutes each way

What is supplied at the range ?
target stands. targets and cardboard backing can be purchased
clubhouse

What do you like or dislike about the range?
Because of paranoia/safety rules, rifle is restricted to 100 yards shooting through a tiny hole from a bench. Makes shooting rifle there pointless.

At the pistol range, people are allowed to move the firing line up close to the targets (on a first come basis), ruining it for everyone else.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
$100 yearly, plus initiation fee the first year

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
usually 2x week

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)?
35-45

What is your gender?
Male

What is your home state?
ohio

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range?

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

Wouldn't pay to use an indoor range unless I was desperate and had no other option. I consider the $100 year to be cheap, and would pay more if I needed.

What would you like the range to supply?
target stands - I think this is a good safety rule. People should be shooting at supplied stands, designed so that shots go into the backstop and not too high or low.

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
same

I'm working on a Business Plan an need a little help. The reason I'm asking for help is there are no local ranges here indoor or outdoor that i can collect information on.

Do you go to a indoor or outdoor range? BOTH

How big is the range you go to indoor, outdoor? INDOOR: 50 FEET. OUTDOOR: 200 YARDS

Is the range private, club or public? BOTH ARE CLUBS.

How far do you travel to the range? INDOOR 18 MINUTES. OUTDOOR 40 MINUTES.

What is supplied at the range ? INDOOR: SOMETIMES USED RIMFIRE TARGETS THAT CAN BE USED FOR CENTERFIRE; RESTROOMS. OUTDOOR: BENCHES, TARGET FRAMES, INDOOR RESTROOM (BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF TREES).

What do you like or dislike about the range? INDOOR CLUB: USED TO HAVE A 100 YARD RANGE OPEN ALMOST ALL DAYLIGHT HOURS. THE ACTIONS OF ONE OR TWO IDIOTS MADE IT CLEAR THAT WE HAD TO GO TO HEAVY SUPERVISION AND LIMITED HOURS. I LIKED THE OLD SETUP BETTER BECAUSE I COULD SHOOT ANY TIME I WANTED, USUALLY BY MYSELF, AND SET UP A CHRONOGRAPH IF I CHOSE TO, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT THE FACTS OF LIFE NO LONGER SUPPORT UNSUPERVISED SHOOTING AT THIS LOCATION. NO COMPLAINTS AT ALL ABOUT THE OUTDOOR RANGE.

IN GENERAL, I LIKE BEING ABLE TO SHOOT AT ANY DISTANCE, WHICH IS USUALLY PRACTICAL AT EITHER RANGE.

What types of fees are you paying hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? INDOOR $150 A YEAR, OUTDOOR $75 A YEAR.

How much time do you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?

What age bracket are you in (under-18)(18-25)(25-35)(35-45)(45-55)(55-65)(75-100)? 55-65

What is your gender? MALE

What is your home state? MA

If you are in the same boat as I'm in how far would you travel
to use a range? MAYBE AN HOUR OR AN HOUR AND A HALF. I WOULDN'T LIVE WHERE THERE WASN'T A RANGE CLOSER THAN THAT.

How much would you be willing to pay to use a indoor or outdoor range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? I PREFER YEARLY, AND OBVIOUSLY I'M ALREADY SPENDING $225. WHEN THE QUESTION GETS ASKED, $300 SEEMS TOPS, BUT EVEN MORE THAN THAT WOULD BE CHEAPER THAN MOVING. AS A HYPOTHETICAL ABOUT PRICING IN GENERAL, I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU GET FOR THE MONEY. THE NRA RANGE IN FAIRFAX, WHEN I WAS THERE, WOULD HAVE BEEN CHEAP AT TWICE THE PRICE, BUT OTHER FOLKS (NOT I) EXPERIENCED WAITING FOR A LANE TO OPEN UP.

What would you like the range to supply? NOTHING.

How much time would you spend at the range hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly? PROBABLY TWO OR THREE HOURS A WEEK.

I travel about 1hr an 40min one way to use a outdoor public range that is only 4 lanes wide 100 yards long if i can get on the range i spend about 6hrs there (NO RESTROOMS AT THE RANGE)

Thanks for all the help!!

Indoor or outdoor? It depends on your location. I always shot at outdoor ranges until I moved north of the Red River. In that country, an outdoor range is viable year round, so indoor ranges are not really necessary and few will bear the extra expense to shoot at one. Once you get further north, it is not so. I use both varieties now that I live further north but I lean toward indoor ranges because they are easier to deal with (no walking downrange to change targets or picking through grass to pick up your brass) and they are operational in the winter when there is not as much going on and it is easier to go shoot.

My suggestion is to speak with some people who are already in the business. Some of them (especially those outside of your area who will not see you as the competition) will probably be willing to share their experiences and/or show you their operation. If not, scout out a few good ranges and take the time to tour them yourself...even if it requires a multi-state road trip.

The best indoor range in this area is Open Range in Crestwood, Kentucky (just east of Louisville on the way to Cincinnati). The owner is Barry Laws, a former actor who moved here from Los Angeles with the intent of setting up one of the best indoor gun ranges in the country. Interestingly, even here in pro-gun Kentucky, Barry faced a bit of an uphill battle. I mention this as a warning not to underestimate the will of your local politicians to turn your dream into their political cause. Anyway, back to the operation. Barry has a pistol range, a rifle range capable of handling anything up to and including .50 BMG, a big indoor paintball arena, and he rents a variety of guns including fully automatic rifles and submachine guns. He is constantly inviting the media in and stressesing his concealed carry permitting and training programs, especially for women. It is a first class facility and the diversified business model is definately something to consider (programs for women and kids, not just the traditional male demographic...specifically Ladies Night, Date Night, and a Bring the Kids promotion where kids 10 and older do the paintball thing while you shoot). The only thing I would add to the range setup is some sort of chronograph function. He already has literally everthing else. You should definately check out his website. He really has the right idea.

Most of the other indoor ranges in the area cater to pistol shooters and their baffles are not rated for anything more than standard velocity handguns, pistol cartridge carbines, etcetra.
