It irritates me most when they try to encourage others to take the easy road, that's when I'm no longer silent. If they ask me I'll always tell them I'm glad that they carry and it's their butt, however they're deluding themselves. A P32 with no BUG and no reload is a formula to get killed IMO.

There was a new poster in the CCW forum ( aretired cop) a few weeks ago that got caught in an armed robbery with his family on the floor of a restaraunt around him, including his two year old grandson, and his only weapon was a .22. He vowed never to be in that position again.

Flop-shank,
Great point...

So, when working I’m always armed with a defensive sidearm. Something in .45 and a bug that uses like ammo & magazines. Also, a long gun of some sort (preferably a rifle) with a few extra cartridges (a hundred or two).

At home or on the ranch it’ll be a heavy revolver and a rifle of convenience in the truck or saddle scabbard.

For Sundays socials or BBQs, and family outtings a suitable caliber (read something that starts with a .4x and not short & weak) to put a stopping on most unseen problem critters that could pop-up, be it man or beast.

But, that's just me talkin' here...

Su Amigo,
Dave

It's funny how someone who has actually been in gun fight will rarely be caught with only a J frame/tiny auto.

You can find 'em, they're out there, but they are few and far between.

Those that don't carry at all, good luck. That's what you're depending on.

Cold weather versus warm weather clothing makes a difference for me. In a T-shirt and shorts its usually a Model 38,sometimes a P32, in winter its usually a .357 of several flavors. Of interest to me was the time I had to go out to work(RN in a downtown Atlanta hospital) and there was some rioting going on intown(remember Rodney King case) I traded my round gun for a square gun and a Glock 19 with a spare mag was carried for 2-3 days, 115+p times 30.
PS The shotgun is in the trunk no matter the season.

Exactly. That's why I said most serious people........

Some people are ignorant, misinformed, simply don't care, or watch too much TV.

I will not be a victim.

It all boils down to this:

IF you truly care about your welfare and that of your loved one's, a responsible man or women will do as much as they can to be prepared. Good people must fight evil with evil.

I guess my way of be prepared is different than others. But I gotta tell ya, some gun carriers worry me more than most bad guys. I don't want to get shot while an innocent bystander.

Out on the town, and at church; it's an old Bodyguard. When on the tractor or walking in the woods; it's a 1911 or Sig 220 ( doing drive-bys on ground hogs while mowing is very rewarding). If I suspect trouble, I try to be elsewhere. Also had Menswearhouse fit a suit to Sig 226 in a paddle holster (at 3:30) so I can carry anything I want at more special ocations. The alterations are included in the price and the "Gun Patch" in the lining (so you don't print) is only $15. this feature will be in all my future dress clothes.

For those who carry a 45 acp. What type ammo do you carry. Ball,Hollow point etc.........speer gold dot,Winchester supreme,Federal hydroshock.........My 45's all but one seem to feed reliably with most HP's.

I grew fond of the hornady XTP many years ago. But technology changes so fast these days. And there are so many brands to chose from. And it is time to rotate my personal defense ammo.

Just curious what you guys think.

Feel free to move this to the ammo section if that would be more appropriate.

Most of the time I have my m&p 40 compact with me in a tuckable holster. It's small and light enough, with a 10 round mag, to carry comfortably. I usually have a spare 10 round mag in my car glove compartment.

Win Ranger T 230gr +P or Corbon DPX in my guns. Pick a good self defense round. Make sure it functions well and is accurate. Then carry it. It's all personal choice.

This sort of thing varies heavily from person to person. Mode of dress, recoil tolerance, disabilities, body type, climate and personal tolerances for weight/poking objects weighed against perceived threat level/risk all play a part. That's why you'll see things that vary from a .25 in a vest pocket to the guys trying to figure out a more comfortable way to wear their rifle plates.

The "right holster" completely disappears, feel like a pillow, and inverts the weight of your gun to only 1oz...

I haven't found that holster yet (it's fictional of course), so my Kholster will have to do. My M&P40c is right at home there in any season, from January to July. It's there 90% of the time I'm out of the house. A P3AT is in pocket 100%.

I feel comfortable with a 9mm. Federal Premium HS 124 JHP expands .69" with 14.5" penetration. OUCH! Talk one shot stops and 40 S&W, 357 Mag. and 45 ACP are darn close. From 93-96% one stop shots. The 9mm drops to 83% then 380ACP down to 63%. I may move to a 40 or 45 someday but for now both my wife and I carry 9mm Sigmas.

We got CPLs in Michigan about 8 years ago and I applied for mine week two to avoid the rush. My friends told me I'd carry less later but started with a 1911 and worked downsize to J frames and a Colt Mustang and Tomcat at times too.
I live and work in areas that having my little 5 shot pea shooters would be enough and I'm overbounds if not. Twice with the .32 I've been in areas when something appeared to be going down but didn't and felt undergunned as my inlaws live in a shaky neighborhood. I carry a little more when visiting that area on rule and know my FIL has bigger within a very short reach there as well.

S&W Body guard 9mm or same in 380 with a 25 Bug. I always carry. But if I expect trouble, I stay away.

While I own several high powered and exotic S&W and Ruger handguns, I carry a Taurus TCP in. 380 as it is light weight, small, reliable, accurate, inexpensive, and very easy to conceal, which is currently important to me. This is because I travel several places where concealed carry is legal, but not socially acceptable. Also I never like to advertise to people in the area where I live that I even like guns much less own several and carry one all the time.

The last things I want are to (1) inspire some young or old bandit to pick me for his next target, or (2) to freak out some of the locals who consider carry a gun worse than having a pet rattle snake on a leash.

Prior to finding the TCP, I carried a S&W 649-2 mostly for 20 years, but on occasion I have also carried a 3913, a 6906, a 4013, a 4013TCP, and a 4513TCP. I am lazy about it and I just prefer a small easily concealable pocket gun to a holster gun for concealed carry.

For me smaller is better, because size does matter.

I always carry a SD40VE and a Kahr CM9. The Kahr may only be a 9mm but I can throw it in my coat pocket for easy access. I take them everywhere.

Indeed, Whitman had one of those in his arsenal on the Texas Tower. In his pocket or not, I don't know about. Actually it is a very finely made and finished small pistol, as good as any other .25. Mine is 100% reliable with Blazer FMJ bullets. Other brands, not so much. No matter, as the Blazer FMJs will do as much damage and penetrate better than the lighter .25 "expanding" bullets (which don't expand). Standard advice is that in .25 ACP, FMJ bullets are the best choice.

I carry a S&W 638 because it's light and concealable. I've shot it a lot and as a result I'm very much aware how hard it is to hit anything with such a short sight radius. I worry about only having 5 rounds, and about the power of even the +P 38 Specials but I think light and concealable trumps those concerns.

However, all my house guns, where carrying isn't a consideration, are 45s: three 45 ACPs and one 45 Colt.

As they say, a gun is like a parachute, if you need it and don't have one, you probably will never need another!

Pick at least one:

Kel-Tec P-32
Smith 642
Glock Model 19 with Federal +P+

If you can't carry any of these, you're neked !

Guess I'm gonna get on the wrong side of our friend Kanewpadle. In a perfect world, I'd love to carry my full size 1911 38 Super, but I found it to be all of the things Mr. K mocks. Most days, my old, humpback S&W Model 49 38spl rides along. There are exceptions, and I'll gun up for them, but the last time I had to draw and fire was in Vietnam. That was also the last time I carried more than one, (M-16, 1911), as well and the last time I felt the need to. Carry more than one if you feel the need, but consider this. Unless your father-in-law is the chief of police, you get into a shooting situation carrying multiple guns, you're gonna have lotsa splainin to do, (apologies to Ricky Ricardo).

How many are still carrying the same as 6 years ago????

I've been carrying pretty much the same for the last 25 years......3913,6906 in Milt Sparks holsters..... and a 3" 66 in a Sparks Summer Special or Bianchi Cyclone at the cabin.

What I carry depends upon where I'm going, what I'm wearing, and what I'm doing, including mode of travel. If I'm working in the yard at home, I'll carry a Browning HiPower 9 in a nice OWB Galco holster. If I'm traveling in my car to a family wedding, I'll carry either an M&P BG .380 or my Sig P238 or my Kimber Micro Raptor. During the work week, I generally carry a full size 9MM or .45 pistol. I don't carry anything I don't regularly train with.

Good question, BAM-BAM! How many of us (who are still here, that is) are carrying the same type of firearm or the same exact firearm we were when this thread started 6 years ago?

I normally, for most of my life, could have said, "Me, me, me! I'm still carrying the J-Frame!

But that has changed and I did a fairly long post a few months ago about the cancer, the Glock 43 and the way I carry and love it.

So, for me, Nope, I still have the J-Frame, but constant carry companion is a Glock 43 with Trijicon HDs with the yellow front site.

Bob

I just "liked" the original post, but I have to admit that things have changed a little in the last six years, and even more in the last 25 or so. However, if anyone has bothered to track my posts, he or she will have already seen that I have recorded the changes. I went from carrying two Model 40s securely IWB to carrying at least a Government Model and a Model 37. As I recall, I later went to a 2.5" M19, and then got a job where an off-body 4" Model 10 was the prudent choice, with rare substitution or backup with a Renegade-holstered Model 37. For some time now, my serious choice has been an improved Model 56 with a couple of Jetloaders, but that more and more often is replaced with a 642 and a couple of Comp I speedloaders. Even with a good belt, sometimes the weight bothers me after a few days. When I'm out of town, or when I perceive certain [self-assigned] responsibilities and my right side doesn't still have phantom perception of weight, I still carry the improved Model 56 (2" Model 15). Otherwise, it seems to be devolving to the 642.

Age matters.

I carry an LCR357 and hope I never ever have to use it. It fits easily into my front jeans pocket and I seldom even know it's there. If I get only one shot I want it to count. The 357 packs a heck of a punch.

I responded to more shootings in my career than I can remember, and there are two indelible lessons I learned: First, shot placement is everything. And secondly, I don't ever want to be shot with ANYTHING.

We had a young drug dealer shot with a .45...he ran for about three blocks before he finally stopped. The bullet entered his midsection and ricocheted downward into his lower abdomen.

We had a crackhead shot in the face by a Baltimore cop. (He was attacking the officer with a large mallet.) The 9mm round entered his face just to the right of his nose, was deflected down through his mouth and neck -- where it nicked his jugular vein -- and stopped in his right lung. He dropped immediately when he was hit. (Our paramedics got him to Johns Hopkins, where they saved his life.)

An old man some years ago, in a poor neighborhood in East Baltimore, saw some teens messing with his car across the street, and cranked off a couple of rounds from a .25 automatic. One round connected in just the right place, and killed one of the kids.

We had an armed robber walk out of a West Baltimore grocery store, smug and full of himself. He stuck his .22 pistol in his waistband, where it discharged. The bullet severed his left femoral artery, and he bled to death before our medics could get there.

If I carried a gun (which is legally all-but-impossible in my state) I would probably carry my Model 19 or Model 66, as much as I love my various Government Models. But in the end, IMHO, the "best" handgun to carry is the one you can carry comfortably and shoot accurately, regardless of caliber.
