Default Talk Major...carry minor.. if you carry at all

I cannot get over the number of friends and colleagues that tell me that the only gun that they would carry is a 45 and yet when I ask to see it they usually tell me that it is at home or something other than ON them.
So it becomes a case of "Talk Major...carry minor.. if at all" I don't get it. The last time this conversation came up I had my S&W model 36 .38 SPL in my front pocket and was chided for carrying a pimp gun...My reply was a question..."And what is it that you are carrying right now?" Well, he replied, I carry a .45, but it is in the vault right now"
At least I have something...you my friend are screwed. Talk Major...my .38 on me is still better than your 1911 in your vault."

There are at least some of us who do carry a .45 everyday. I would venture to guess that there are many who do. When I am not carrying that, it's the .357 640-1 that's in my pocket as we speak.....er.... type.

I prefer a .45 over anything else in general, but it's not always practical. I do not feel undergunned with the .357. Having said that, I would never belittle anyone for carrying whatever they felt comfortable carrying. I have my preferences, and others have theirs.

I like a 696 in a cut up leather holster in my pocket. It is sort of big, so am I, and I wear loose fitting pants.
I took a Galco belt holster and got a knife and cut off every part of it that was not needed to protect the hammer and trigger. Made a pocket holster that fits a 696.

Its a case of suite yourself. Truth is I seldom carry anymore. I am retired in a safe area, do have a permit where I can carry anytime. I carried on my job for 35 years and am a "afficiado". Yet, I got over the novelity almost 35 years ago. I have been a "profiler" all my life and I have a good nose as when and where to carry. Bettcha I hear back on that one! I have just about every gun type in the safe, save a 9mm anymore. Snubs, belt guns in most calibers etc. When I do carry its on trips, and always in the boonies as I do a lot of exploring on our atv. I seldom pack around our small town. If I do its a old model 40. Remember, I am retired and no longer work in the big citys.
I no longer carry "Just because I can". Now if I smelled real trouble,
A. I wouldnt be there
B. If no way out I would have a shotgun or a rifle with my .45 1911 as a backup.
Basicly I am into light. My s&w .38 model 60 for the pocket,
and either my 357 3" 66-3 or 24-3 4" on the quad.

I have a bob-tailed 1911 commander that I absolutely love. But when I am walking out the door, 99% of the time I shove a little Ruger LCP in my pocket instead.

Take turns with a 642, 36 or a Cobra. Once in a while a 34. Don't CC any of my 4".

I'm with you, Growr. I usually always carry my 36.
I had a guy call it a Saturday night special one time. It just confirmed what I already knew about him.

I carry whatever's appropriate to the situation. Most of the time that's a full sized semi-auto or revolver, no smaller in caliber than 9x19mm. I frequently carry a .45acp M1911. When I have to frequently disarm, I carry a 2" Model 36 in a pocket holster.

No matter WHAT I carry, I carry wherever it's legal to do so.

I like to carry my M&P45C in an IWB, my usual mode of carry.

What have I been carrying since Thanksgiving? The KelTec P3AT.

No more ice cream, no more pie...

If Illinois allowed C&C, I'd carry a 1911 in .45 or I'd get myself a .357 revolver (preferably S&W)...

You bet. When I had a horse, I used my saddle as my diet guide. Now it's the IWB.

I refuse to carry the .32.

I have been carrying at least one handgun daily for the last 35 years. I carry weapons that I would feel comfortable with using to stay alive when dealing with armed attackers who have decent weapons. I would not want to deal with a large, enraged individual armed with a contact weapon at close range using a peashooter. The old, hack sayings, "Better a peashooter in the pocket than a cannon in the safe." and, "I wouldn't want to be shot by anything, even a tiny gun." are very misleading. In a life and death struggle, there are no excuses or do overs. So, whatever anyone else carries doesn't matter to me. I always carry a capable handgun. Today, its been a Glock 27 and a LCP as a BUG. Sometimes its a 1911 or a S&W 66 snub or a S&W M&P 9c. My lightest carry is a Kahr P9 Covert. Why would I want to carry a weapon I wouldn't want to try to kill a deer with to fight off a determined human predator?

One of my pet peeves has always been guys recomending small calibers and light guns to ladys, but wouldnt be caught carrying them theirselfs. If you get right down to it, it should be the opposite!

In cold weather I keep my 642 in the patch pocket of my old leather jacket. ParaOrd Companion C7.45 LDA either in the front, zippered pocket of my computer bag or in a belt slide holster. The computer pocket is lined with foam to hold the gun in place and has a nice slab of thick mouse pad in front of the gun to prevent 'print through'. Driving at night I switch to a Ruger P95 with Crimson Trace Grips (my old fart, where did I leave my bifocals? gun) in an Uncle Mikes molded paddle holster in cross draw position. Just recently bought a used Star BM 9mm I am experimenting with. Also considering carrying my Sigma .40VE or Springfield XD 9mm but do not have a dedicated holster for either yet. In Summer I frequently carry a P3AT or small 9mm IWB using an attached clip. Tried the Grip Clip on a full sized 1911 and was not too happy with it. Thinking about making something similar for one of my smaller 1911s.

I carry a Glock Model 27 .40 in an ankle holster everyday. If I have a jacket on, there is usually also a S & W Model 642 .38 Spl in a jacket pocket somewhere. I also have a Kimber CDP Ultra .45 ACP and a Les Baer Thunder Ranch .45 ACP on or close by me everyday....I feel very comfortable with all of them....

My advice to others, and I'm a living example of it, is to carry as much gun as possible and also a BUG. Sometimes the biggest gun I can hide is a P3AT (that's a rare occasion). Oftentimes it's a 5" 629 with a .357 snub (or two) as a BUG.

At home I usually have a long gun within arms reach. Right now it's an 18" Wingmaster with four rounds of full power 00 buck in cruiser ready. Round five is in my back pocket so I can top off after I rack the slide.

Do everything possible to avoid trouble, but pack for a fight and pack to win.

The role of the defensive handgun is to win a fight, not act as a talisman. The more you stack the odds in your favor, the more likely you are to win.

All that said, if a person were to get only one carry gun, I would advise them to get a gun that they can always carry. For most people that would be a J frame, or P3AT. The one trick pony who only has a 1911 is likely to leave it at home due to circumstances sometimes. That's a big no-no.

I've generally got one or two .45s around, nearby if trouble shows up . . . and I've ALWAYS got the Model 37 Airweight in my pocket.

Odds are, if trouble comes it will be the M37 that will have to be in my hand . . . as I fight my way to a more "capable handgun, shotgun, or rifle.

It is crazy to have a "big boomer" that isn't at hand and feel like you are protected. Trouble doesn't show up usually . . . and if it does, trouble usually doesn't wait until you are ready for it. Quite the contrary.

T.

I have three that I rotate every so often. I recently bought a Ruger LCP and picked up a nice handmade leather paddle holster it is so light and small and really like carrying it. Also a Kahr K9 a bit on the heavy side but a great gun, then the old flat latch Mod 36. At home my 80# German Shepard will take care of anything until I grab the Mossberg 500 with a 18" barrel and OO Buck.

Until recently a 642 was my most frequently carried hand gun, until my wife borrowed it, making two for her, one in her purse and one in her fanny pack (she takes one of those at a time. I didn't object because I recently bought a Kahr P45, rough on the hand, but fairly accurate, and I'm getting better with it. My only complaint with it so far is the holsters I have bought for it let the grip stick out at an angle, so I have to find a better fit for it. A week ago I rented a Ruger LCR and loved it. The sights are better than the 642, I love the trigger pull, and I get much better groups (it's amazing how sights you can see make a difference). A Ruger LCR will soon be my BUG.

I carry according to mood. BUT ! you can bet whatever I am carrying I can shoot and hit weather it be 9mm or 500 MAG. A well placed 22 LR is better than a miss with a 500.

I guess I am saying carry whatever you want just make sure you know how and can use it.

Would you rather carry a High point in 45. (if they even make one) or a 3913 S&W or a Glock 26.

I carry a glock30 .45 everyday except right now because I'm on my way to my sons basketball game. I could carry it & noone would know but I'm obeying the law.

Default Major

Howdy,
You that have been around a while have probably heard me tell the "Alligator in the bassboat" story.
Two brother in laws, a Beretta 21 in LR, me and eight to ten feet of uninvited alligator in a fishing boat.
I really liked the 21. It shot good, worked all the time and was a treat to carry. I sold it as soon as we got back from vacation.
If I leave home armed anymore it is the 457 or a bigger 45.
It made a believer out of me.
My advice is carry as much gun as you can. If you ever need it you will be glad you did.
Thanks
Mike

When I first got my concealed carry permit, I carried a Colt Commander in 45. As I got older, the guns weight and loss of butt made it unconfortable, so I resorted to a 640-1. I don't carry often because I only leave the place on Saturdays. One is always nearby though.

I carry a Sigma SW40VE every day. I almost went the compact 9mm route [Kel-Tec P11] because I knew I could carry that every day, but once I decided that I would carry the Sigma, I just make whatever adjustment I need to for carrying it. We will see what happens when the weather gets warm, but by then I will probably switch from the Kholster to a Smartcarry, since I wear shorts all summer.

Live in military housing so not too many guns out and loaded as there would be if I lived off post. Usually my 36 when I go off post for a quick trip or my Glock 19 at the moment. Trying to get me another 1911 as I seem to be able to conceal one of those almost as well as my 36.

My 642 is my minimum (and most often carried). Next up is a Glock 23. I have a Kahr CW40 on lay-away.

One of my j-frames. I wear semi-baggy khakis and a polo-type shirt with no jacket about 350 days a year. A j-frame in a front pocket is just the easiest to carry and conceal. I have been known to have one in each pocket.

mawguy, on the hottest summer days here in the Murder Mitten I wear shorts with a 5" full underlug 629 (read 3 lb. gun) IWB at 3:30, a 24 oz. 2 1/4" Taurus 605 .357 in the weakside front pocket, a reload for both and a NAA .22 mag Black Widow as a final BUG in the strong side front pocket. Of course I use the best holsters (Fist 1A kydex/leather hybrid for the 629 and a Mika pocket holster for the Taurus) and a dual layer bullhide belt from www.thebeltman.net . Provided you have no health issues precluding it, you can carry whatever you want if you're willing to deal with some inconvenience and dress around the gun/s. Busy pattern button down shirts with heavier fabric that are slightly big are my preference. I'm carrying a total of about five pounds of artillery, so I'll guess that a Sigma is easily doable with the right set up provided you have no health issues.

Last, but not least, I don't mean to sound patronizing. I don't know if you are an experienced carrier or not.

Ditto! Even when taking out the trash or doing yardwork.

If I'm out and about running errands and such, it's a Glock 23.

I have only been carrying for a little over a month. I started with a 4" service revolver in .357 magnum. That gun is 3 pounds and was fairly bulky. I added the Sigma as an improvement to the revolver and it has been much better. I have bought around 4-5 holsters to figure out the best way to carry comfortably and finally figured out how to carry each gun with light to heavy coats. I am confident that I can now carry the Sigma under any circumstance in my lifestyle. My wife did ask me if I have found the "right holster" now. What do you say to that?

Most people that are truly serious about concealed carry and the use of deadly force have more than one gun to choose from and quite often carry more than one.

I know several people that "talk the talk" but don't "walk the walk".

Almost worse yet, I know others that do carry service caliber guns that shoot only once or twice a year.

I get increasingly tired of the excuses. "It's too heavy!". "It's too big!". "It's uncomfortable!".

Someone once said, "carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable, but comforting".

I have always been able to spot trouble from a distance. But since I don't have a crystal ball, I carry everywhere. No excuses. It's a commitment. A way of life. As it should be.

There was a time when my wife was questioning how much I was spending on holsters and reloading supplies. I told her that once I had a good inventory and my carry guns and rig pretty much nailed down, the spending would slack off considerably. Unlike Congress, I made good on my word. She knew from experience that I had the picture and it would be as I said. Getting started carrying can be expensive, but it does get better if you research your purchases carefully, and learn from experience what works and what does not.
