Default 1958 (Rifles A Modern Encyclopedia) & 1961 (Pistols A Modern Encyclopedia)

Two reference books thou dated 1958 (Rifles A Modern Encyclopedia) & 1961 (Pistols A Modern Encyclopedia) that still contain information of value. I just obtained Rifles to replace my threadbare copy for $17.50 plus $3.00 shipping. The original retail price $12.50 in 1958. Henry M Stebbins covers the subject matter in detail yet writes in an easy reading style.

A lot has changed since both of those were orginally written. Just think, at that time the 9mm was some 'foreign' round seldom seen in the United States, polymer handguns were yet to be invented along with the 10mm and .40 S&W, the M1 rifle and M1911 were still the primary weapons of US armed forces, and Winchester was still a few years away from making those disasterous manufacturing changes in '64.

I have had both books for years; they sit next to 'Sixguns' on my bookshelf. Stebbins is a bit wordy and rambles, and all the info is dated but well worth reading; far better than the stuff in the gun rags nowadays.

The pistol book has an excellent chapter on 'The Pistol In Military Service' by a father and son team named Florich. Probably one of the best analyses of the subject ever written, then or now. It deserves to be dusted off and reread these 50 years later.

I have both those books. They are fun to go through from time to time. Well written, and still informative despite their age.

Yes much has transpired since both of those books were written. Yet each book is depository of information/reference.

Not many people venture in to the woods during deer season with a lever action rifle chambered in 303 Savage or pump-action chambered in 35 Remington. Some times it’s good to look back and remember that a Remington model 41 pump action rifle is splendid eastern woods hunting rifle.

If one includes Elmer Keith’s Sixguns in their personal library than Pistols a Modern Encyclopedia is a good companion reference.
