Default MARILYN MONROE

I just saw MM in The Misfits for the first time. I couldn't believe that she was/is so revered as a sex symbol. She appeared short and dumpy, her '55 Caddy front end was like a shelf, her breathy voice sounded like she was suffering from asthma and her acting was terrible. Clark Gable was no better. The whole movie was unbelievable as a story but I became fascinated that these "legends" were really very bad actors. Does anyone agree, or was I just having a bad day?

Marilyn was physically ill when she made the Misfits. Gable was sick also and died not long after from a heart attack. Marilyn was good in roles that fit her personality. Gable was a superb actor but getting old.

The 'beautiful' models of today would have been called skinny in the 40's & 50's.

At that time many were, and had been for eons, struggling to get enough food to live on. Meat on a ladies bones was a symble of affluance and beauty.

I thought she looked pretty cute and curvy in that movie. Her character really seemed to have some mental problems, kinda like Vivien Leigh in "Streetcar".
You're right about no real story there. To me it's just a great character study. And, being in Sacramento, I like seeing a movie set in Reno. I was three in 1960 but that movie shows Reno like it was when my dad would go on hunting trips in Nevada.
There's this one scene where Clark Gable is talking to the nuerotic M.M. character in this little garden and he just shot a shotgun. While doing the dialogue he's reloading the pump gun without loosing eye contact with her. It's shows a guy who knows his guns like his character would, just like Clark Gable did in real life, too.

M.M. was very sexy earlier in her career, I also would maintain that she was always a far superior comedic actress than a dramatic actress.I would reccomend "Monkey Business" and "Some like it hot" as examples of her comedic ability."Gentlemen prefer Blondes" was a complete hoot!As for front shelf, check out Jane Russell in that flick[smile]

Many years ago I had a girl friend that also was a friend to clark gable. She was a stunt woman and worked on that film. I dont recall if she stunted on that movie or it seems she was a waitress in a background scene. Anyway I remember her also saying that Gable was sick or injured with a bad back I think. She died with cancer in about 1971.

Tastes change. Looking at old Marlene Detrich film clips I cannot see how she was considered a singer. But she was all the rage for a decade or so.

Marlene's singing was merely a vehicle to see her in sexy lingerie[smile] As a singer she had a great figure!

I met MM in 1956 when she was filming Bus Stop in Phoenix. I was just 17 at the time, and trust me, she was beautiful. She was etched in my mind from that moment on. If anyone doubts her beauty or comedic talent, I recommend they see The Seven Year Itch where she co-starred with Tom Ewell. No, she wasn't perfect. She was neurotic and hard to deal with as an actress. But she really tried, and had a measure of success. She's a legend now, and you can't say that about a lot of people. May she rest in peace.

I well remember the calendar she did, I think it was also the first centerfold for Playboy, December 1953. i was about 11 years old.. dad wouldn't bring it in the house so I had to sneak out to his truck to look at it. It was very Impressive for an eleven year old boy! An overhead shot of MM, posed on red velvet! It is burned ito my memory forever!

Thanks for the photo of MM over the air vent! I do remember that and the PB centerfold. You all are right...early in her career she was very good looking. Guess we all go to seed sooner or later. I've seen Jane Russell recently...older but still a fox!

Red face

As good as Some Like it Hot was, there was no love lost between Tony Curtis and MM. He once commented that kissing her was like kissing Hitler, Ouch! I love to watch it over and over and see the old Hotel Del Coronado where it was filmed. Still standing and an amazing place to visit if you are ever in San Diego (Coronado).

Times and tastes change. Mae West was once considered pretty hot.
One of Clark Gable's saving graces was that he did not take himself very seriously. My mother told me that one time she saw him in the offices of Columbia Studios in New York. She caught him rinsing out a piece of his dental work in a drinking fountain. He saw her, held up his dental piece, said some to the effect of "America's Sex Symbol" while ha gave her an Alfred E. Neuman smile. Then he laughed.

For those who don't think MM was hot, you really should try and find that PB centerfold pic. In her prime MM was smokin hot.

This has to be one of the most famous pics of her. I read that it upset Joe DiMaggio, her husband of the time. Other men teased him about his wife's panties on public view, and he took it badly.

You couldn't get a photo like that with a modern girl wearing thong panties...

At the time that Playboy used her photos, Hefner lacked money for models, and leased rights to the nude photo of her on the red background.

Asked by a reporter whether it was true that Marilyn had posed with nothing on, the quick-witted actress replied, "Not true. I had the radio on."

Not many actresses of ANY era are to my tastes (I'm a picky SOB with chicks) but she was what she was,not too bad lookin'

Fun fact:where she first got really noticed (I think it was a beauty pageant of some sort) was in Lompoc,CA as I'm sure all of you old enough will know.

I grew up ten miles away from there, last I heard Lompoc has incorporated with my old home-Prundale.

Oh,and Granddad shipped James Dean's body too

This era too has its share of goofy, haggard, strung out "sex symbols" that many think are actually pretty talentless.

Anyone who chooses to be a "pop" star in any field of entertainment had better not take themselves too seriously . . . lest they blow their brains out one day when they realize they are not what they are touted to be.

It must be very, very hard to live a life in a bubble with millions of folks saying mean things.

As far as Marilyn, she WAS very POPular in her age. And she handled the fame about as well as she could have, I guess.

Let her rest in peace.

Bite your tongue!

T-Star, I think the Joe DiMaggio reaction to the grate photo was before they married. If I recall aright, they took their honeymoon in the Far East. MM went to Korea to entertain the troops. Hooking up with Joe back in in Tokyo, she said, "You've never heard such cheering!" "Yes I have," he said.

This thread caused me to reminisce a bit so I googled "MM calender". would you believe they are still being sold? Yep, the same pose! She was paid $50 for the photo session in 1949. Seek and ye shall find. Oh, and an original 1952 calendar goes for $1500-2500!

How much was $50 then, compared to what it'd be now?

Of course, she was an unknown then, not yet the famous actress she'd become. Norma Jean Somebody, until she became Marilyn.

I think, "Playboy" now pays about $50,000 or more for a typical celebrity photo spread. Denise Richards is rumored to be about to pose for a second one. I think I heard of her fee being in the realm of half a million! Does anyone know for sure?

By contrast, supermodels also fare quite well. Forbes said that Dutch model Doutzen Kroes earns an average of $6 million a year. One Brazilian girl (Giselle Bundchen) has earned about $11 million. She has never done much for me visually. Seems sort of cold and vain. Doutzen is totally hot, sweet, and apparently quite modest.

She is much prettier than MM, in my opinion. Same for Ana Beatriz Barros, Alessandra Ambrosio, etc.

Of girls of her day, Grace Kelly seemed much classier than MM. But much lies in the eye of the beholder.

It would be speculation, but I suspect that certain persons close to the Kennedys did kill her. I think Robt. Kennedy may have had it done.

I read a book about that, and wish that the coroner at the time had been more thorough and frank.

We'll probably never know for sure. Just as with the JFK assassination.

Tony Curtis just wrote a book about the making of Some Like it Hot, which I bought and read. Apparently MM was really hard to work with on that movie. But she was plenty hot enough (he said) to give him (ahem) really strong arousal in the scene where they made out on the boat. He also said that he and she had the second of two flings during the filming, and that her then-husband Arthur Miller confronted the two of them about it on the set. Not a happy scene, apparently. She later had a miscarriage, and Curtis was speculating that he might have been the father. MM had numerous affairs outside of her marriages, so who knows.

For what it's worth, the evidence points to her being murdered by the Kennedys. She had affairs with both JFK and RFK, who were both major horndogs. She had indicated to others that she was going public with this knowledge, and was going announce it on the day after she was murdered. I believe the evidence will show that RFK made a sneak trip to LA the night she died. The whole deal was covered up - with RFK as Attorney General, that was probably not too hard to engineer. Never trust a politician with something to lose.

That wasn't a very good movie for monroe. She couldn't remember her lines because she was staying stoned most of the time. Remember, that's how she killed herself very shortly thereafter after.

Gable insisted on doing his own stunts. That last scene killed him. He died of cardiac arrest three days later.

But if you want to read about a really dysfunctional person, read Montgomery Clift's biography. That guy was weird.

Personally, I hate that movie. More tree hugging/"Run bambi, there's man" nonsense. So what those horses were used for dog food? They need to be used for something.

Now those horses can no longer be used for dog food and we're spending millions in taxes keeping them alive. We've got a ton of them here in OK that do nothing but eat.

By the way, it was not a centerfold, it was a single page picture. Playboy did not start using centerfold pictures until several issues later. The *real* first Playboy centerfold was Eve Meyer, wife of Russ Meyer - Russ was the photographer too.

Playboy seldom uses centerfold pictures any more, the ones that fold out twice are actually called "gatefolds". Doesn't sound quite the same though.

I wonder how much better of an actress she would have been with todays technology; the anamation and digital stuff; cars flying through the air and blowing up like 100lbs of TNT; snotty little half-naked actresses doped up during shooting.....opps, sorry!

I think Paladin`s explanation is spot on. I did like MM in River of No Return with Robert Mitchum.

God Bless them all. The last of the studio actors.....Are what we get now really any better? it is a question of time my friends, just a question of time.....When one actress can make all high school girls wear tight calf length skirts and tight cashmere sweaters almost over night I would say she had something going for her. sure made us teenage boys happy as a rabbit in a carrot garden....

An all time favorite.

She certainly had a presence for a time.

I can't believe the likes of Lindsey Lohan and others are what pass as actresses and celebrities these days.

THere are still some good actresses who don't make fools of themselves in public.

Rachel Blakely, Lara Cox...oops, those are Australians! Well, Katie Holmes is pretty good here. I really wish that more came to mind.

Well, that's wrong. T-Star's right -- after the marriage. Did a little reading up on it. Apparently Joe slapped her around afterward at their hotel... They were divorced less than a year after.
