G.I. Joe - The Movie - They destroyed my fond childhood memories
Uff-Da, I finally saw this dog today. Needless to say it's perhaps a bit juvenile for the usual crowd here but I need to unload.
They took what was an intricate and interesting topic (comic book-wise anyway) and completely made an ENTIRELY different and ridiculous chronology and story. The comic was obviously farfetched but at least Larry Hama did what he could and made it believeable, this trainwreck was a travesty that didn't even try to make the topic plausible.
Let's see, Dukes of Hazzard, X-Men, G.I.Joe, and likely the future A-Team movie - Thank you Hollywood for destroying everything entertainment-wise that made the late 70s, all of the 80s, and early 90s golden for me.
Anyone else care to weigh in? I'd love to hear any like-minded or contrary (unlikely) opinions.

At least the newest Star Trek movie was decent... As was the newest X-Files movie, IMO. Other than that, I've seen a lot of **** films from good franchises. Hoping the new A Nightmare on Elm Street is as good as the latest Friday the 13th was.

I was born in 1970 but the 80's ruined G.I Joe 30 years ago! The best 80's G.I Joe can be found Adult Swim and Robot Chicken on the Cartoon Net. late night. It's rude, crude and deserving of what they did to G.I Joe!

I really enjoyed the latest Star Trek. Couldn't watch the entire GI Joe. Watchmen has some cool special effects.
Was disappointed with Inglorious Basterds, not enough action.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it referred to "The Story of
G.I. Joe" starring Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith, who played Ernie Pyle whose writings formed the basis of this movie.
Good grief, you snotty wet behind the ears children!!!!!!!
(Oh, yeah, kiddies, and just what do the letters G and I stand for?)

Original the letters GI stood for Galvanized Iron and refereed specifically to trash cans, as in: Can, Waste, 35 gallon, G.I. (for galvanized iron). During WW2 the GI part started to mean Government Issue.

Gota agree with ya...
The GI Joe movie was really bad. I am not really sure who they were targeting as a audience. Seems to me that young kids don't really care or know what GI Joe is and the 25 to 35 year old guys that loved the show as a kid will be let down buy this **** they put out. I thought it would be a bit cheesy but wow there is not that much cheese in all of Green Bay. Special effects don't make up for a lousy story.
However the Star Trek movie had it right. They kept with the story and used modern special effects to make it even better. I was never a treckie but I loved this movie.

I concur, two thumbs up for Trek, but I got up and left G.I. Joe, and it was a DVD someone had brought in.

The comic of the 80s and early 90s was far different than the cartoon that was on the air around the same time. The cartoon was always rather silly.
I grew up on the 1:18 (approx) scale GI Joes that came out in '82 and lasted until I was in college. Later, I started collecting the larger 1:6 scale (12") GI Joes. Those were the original scale (coming out way back in '64 as the first action figure) and the 12" Joes were popular again in the late 90s on through just past the turn of the century.
One nice thing about the movie was that it did generate a handful of nice new 12" figures, such as the Duke figure. While basic, his M16A1 was a nice accessory, as was the hat.

I liked star trek but could not watch GI Joe.
Honestly, I'm about all special effects out these days. I don't understand why almost everything needs to have 'special effects'. I went to see the movie 300 in a theater when it first came out. First movie to get me in a theater in roughly 10 years because I was interested in the story, only to find out they jacked up portions of the film with 'special effects'.
I would not be surprised to see them remake the movie It's a Wonderful Life with special effects.

I haven't seen GI Joe yet and not sure I want to,it looks bad.
Star Trek was odd on two accounts:
First I ain't a trek fan at all but this was the first film I ever went to see twice while it was in theaters.
Second it made me like the original trek,I never watched it as a kid and always avoided it,now I'm buying the TV show on DVD and really enjoying it!
But I still hate that next generation ****-that made me crazy and still does,Kirk could kick Picard's butt and look good doing it.
