Went to Cabelas in Wheeling last Saturday , I could not belive the amount of ammo there was for a 40 S & W. Better priced than almost anything there. Please, somebody talk me out of it.

Talk you out of it? I can't think of a reason to! It has become my 2nd favorite caliber. Great combo of capacity and power. Both my semi auto carry guns are .40s (M&P40C and Glock 27).

My next purchase will hopefully be a S&W 610 (10mm / .40) revolver.

I'm quite fond of all three of my guns in .40 S&W. I consider it somewhat of the modern equivilent of someone 100 years ago with a Winchester and two Colt's all in .38-40.

As someone who has four 40 caliber handguns, right now I am quite pleased that I chose the 40 over 9mm or 45 ACP. Fact is that one reason why I bought my 610 was to have a revolver that was cheap to shoot. A local Walmart has been well stocked with 40 caliber since last September and at 13.97 per box it's a lot cheaper than the 38 spl. at the range.

BTW, Sports South is no longer listing the 4 inch 610, which leads me to believe that S&W is going to drop that version from their catalog. If you happen on a 4 inch 610, don't hesitate, buy it. I have the 6 1/2 inch 610 and it's not easy to shoot well with in rapid fire drills, it's too muzzle heavy. However, from a rest in single action it's a heck of a good nail driver.

I have been stunned by how much .40 S&W is available at nearly every Wal-Mart in the Wichita area. What's not to like about the round chosen by so many law enforcement agencies across the country? It is what helped tip me away from a 9mm to the 40 cal. Go for it!!

If 9mm is the most popular handgun in the world, then odds are the badguy will be sporting a 9. I can trump him with my fourty.

The reasons LE agencies choose certain weapons/calibers frequently has much more to do with politics than with any qualities of the products involved. I know of several training directors who bitterly regret being talked into going with the .40.

Note: this time last year, .40 ammo was backordered to the point that some agencies had to cancel scheduled training.

Have a few relaxing beverages, lie down and the urge will pass. The .40 does nothing significantly better than anything else.

Not to mention components. And I don't have nearly enough fun chasing .45ACP and 9X19 brass now. So what I need, is to broaden my horizons of time spent on hands and knee's retrieving brass.
And next year, I look forward to picking up something in .45 GAP...

I got into 40 a couple of years ago. I was picking up so much brass it was inevitable. Now my defensive cartridge of choice is 40.

Get it! I never thought I'd see the day when a cartridge replaced the .45 for my auto loader preference.. then along came the .40! Velocities over 1000 ft/s and pushing 500 ft-lbs.... plus extra rounds than you can carry in .45

I still have some of my .45s for nostalgic reasons of course.

the .40 caliber is the choice of most law enforcement agencies. As for me, I carry a Springfield XD four inch .40 S&W. It shoots very accurate and had no malfunctions in over 3000 rounds. What I like about the gun is the grip safety. The new XDM has added an additional safety on the slide and more rounds in the magazine and you do not have to pull the trigger to release the slide after activation. It was the NRA 2009 gun of the year.

The XDm does not have a thumb safety.
Only the XD in .45 ACP, and then only certain models.

I have a P229R in .40 and it is my daily carry gun. Although the ammo for it in my area is no more available than 9mm or .380 it is still a little cheaper than the others when it is available. I love my 229 and, good thing about those is the fact that later on if you want you can always buy the barrels to make a .357 sig or mags and barrel to make it 9mm.

I am like one other poster; I think .40 is a great round and a good comprommise between the 9mm and .45 and, still yet another poster mentioned that lots of your LE agencies have gone to that round. Knowing all this i'd say go for it.

I recall in the early to mid 1990's, you could buy .40 S&W pistols, no sweat. However ammo was a serious problem. Couldn't find the stuff anywhere, and if you did find suitable duty ammo...it was expensive!

I bought a .40 for duty use, and ended up selling it because of the terrible ammo availability. I figured at the time the .40 was going to end up like the 5mm Remington.....lots of people with guns.....but nobody with ammo!

Rumor had it back then that all the good ammo was contracted out to big city Police departments that had adopted guns in the caliber. Don't know if that's true or not, but I went with 9mm for duty use because you could actually buy suitable duty ammo.

Times have changed.

Ammo availability is cyclical. You could re-write the post above and substitute .380 for .40 and it would pretty much be up to date with current events.
