Default What's the punishment here for warnings?

I might have missed this in the "RULES", but is there a limit on warnings here? Like three strikes you're out? I've gotten a few warnings and ceased political rants. At what point does one get banished, and for how long?
I don't want to slip up and get exiled to the RG or Lorkin forums.

I try not to push my luck, I like it here too much. If you get in trouble, this might help.

A warning is just a warning, and there's no points or anything. It's just reminder.

Points have expiration dates, which vary according to the severity of the infraction.

Send $20 per warning to.......

Seriously, might be a good time to address this. Some people seem to be upset lately over the warnings.

Here's the scoop-
This is a LARGE, busy board. Look at the stats at the bottom of the main menu page now and then.
We average 35-50 new members per day.
6895 UNIQUE members have looged on in the last month.
We have thousands of unique visitors per day.
Well over 1,000 people online EVERY night.
4484 NEW THREADS in Dec, 09.
42177 new posts in Dec- that averages 1361 posts per day.

Now, we have 3 Admins and 6 Mods working the place.
Do the math. We are busy.
So, we have a rather FAST, convenient ding system in place that allows us to send a Warning or issue an Infraction with a few clicks. It allows for a quick, brief message to be sent by the Mod. It starts a thread only the staff can see in a private area for staff only. It records the Warning or Infraction in the user's profile so the user and the staff can see it. Other members CANNOT see the history of your sins. So, we have a very discreet way of informing you with both the Warning and the Infraction(Ding) that you need to peruse the rules.

Warnings are just that- a warning that one has crossed a line. The Mod had to check an extra box to give you a warning instead of a DING.
If you get one, take 3 minutes, and ponder the rules. If you get two or three, you might want to really cram for the final, and read the Terms of Service at bottm left of every page.

Infractions carry a point value.
Most are low- 1 point.
Others are 2,3, and 5 points.

3 points = 3 days off
5 points = 7 days off
7 points = 30 days off- However, by this point, I might consider the User's absence an asset.

You could engage Cajunlawyer to explain it better to you. Don't count on Caj gettin' you outa trouble- just explainin' why you are in trouble. tell 'im he's workin' pro bono cause we put up with him.

Points have a limited life- they expire after a certain time. They do accumulate while still alive. If you accumulate the third LIVE point, you automatically get the 3 days off.

Some people, trolls, and spammers obviously won't do well here, and don't make it a full day.

Some members blow up about being warned, and get obnoxious, crude, profane, or downright vulgar in PM's to the Mod (ladies included). At that point, I engage with a courteous, but very straightforward message that we expect good behavior to stay here. They often blow up on me, and they are gone. They obviously won't play well with others.

I have a large investment in this board in real money. I have a huge investment in time spent that was non income producing.
As I always say, it is not a political board, news board, brawl board, or general "fix-your-life or the world" board. It is an S&W board. I'll do what it takes to keep it running smoothly and focused on that topic.

Thanks for posting this thread. I'd received two minor infractions over the past 2 months, and was concerned about being kicked. I see they have no points value now, but not looking to add anything to them.

6895 new members looging on every month
I didn't know that looging was allowed
Even though those points drop off, remember that the IT guy has them on your permanent record in case he is ever called to court

"6895 UNIQUE members have looged on in the last month."

Just for shins n grits, how many of those unique loogers have 20 posts or less?

Members: 56,950, Active Members: 6,911

What's the criteria/frequency of posting formula for being considered active?

How many of the total members have 20 posts or less?

Is UNIQUE a diabolical combination of KAOS & SPECTRE?

And the #1 question: Does having a unique member make me a UNIQUE member?

Post count is irrelevant in any statistic we track.

Post count has never equaled post quality.

Realize at that any moment approximately 60% of people on the forum are "visitors", meaning that they are not logged in at all.

An "Active" member is any member who has logged into the forum in the last 30 days.

The other day I was at a local gun shop and over heard someone discussing our forum. I asked him what his forum name was. He told me, and followed up with, "I never log in, I am on the forum every single day, but I have not logged in since before the conversion" (conversion was early June '09). Hey Ivan, log in already, I know you are reading this...

Some more numbers for your head:

Max number of people online at one time is 1332. That record was set last night. We break that record about every 2-3 weeks.

Unique users per day: 7000+ (that means 7000 unique IP addresses)

Unique IP addresses per month: 95,000+

Page views per month: 9,500,000, (that is 9.5 Million.)

We average 4500 Threads per month.

We average 45,000 posts per month.

We average well over 1000 new members per month.

With those numbers, I'm amazed at how civil, friendly, respectful and downright "fun" this place is. This has to be because of the work of Lee and the mods. I've been to quite a few forums, some as a member, some just to look around. And this is, by far, the best. The numbers prove it. Congrats to the ones who make it happen.
(Now please take me off the hit list Barb)

Just noticed, a new record last night for most users online!

We average 4500 Threads per month.

We average 45,000 posts per month.

We average well over 1000 new members per month.

Over 10%, of total members, are active because they logged in.

I arbitrarily picked out the number twenty, yet my gist of curiosity revolves around how many of these vast numbers contribute by an occasional post.

In my definition logging in w/o posting is not being active any more than lurking. I can see where it would be a handy stat for the classifieds.

I didn't allude to quality being represented or related to quantity.

Sixty percent are visitors evah so roughly so, we'll take the 7000 unique IPs a day and say everyone only came aboard on only one computer.

That leaves 2800 members. 8.2 members per active member. 339.79 active members, online on one day, that have at least logged on in the past thirty days.

Out of those 340 maximum, daily, active members we cipher how many used multiple IPs and how many posted.

At least 5 % used more than one IP so around 320.

My conclusion, though maybe not rational for your stats, comes to no more than 100-150 unique folks posting, on an average, for any given day.

I'll also venture to guess that out of those numbers maybe 10% haven't posted more than 20 or 25 times.

Out of the roughly 100 or so unique, active members that post, only a few dozen of them will be a major, regular contributor of posts.

I'm not taking into account staff or the SWCA private area and I'd like to see the numbers crunched w/o the classifieds as well.

Anywho, lots of folks watch TV w/o contributing and I'm not buying or selling advertisement.

All I'm saying is that you can take all those big numbers and attribute them, for the most part, to a small group of posters.

(I am not for one moment attempting to diminish the time, work, money and effort put into this site. I'm trying to look beyond that to lowest common denominator.

Doesn't mean I'm right or accomplished such undertaking.)

There is history to search, but w/o pics/posts for folks to look at/read there wouldn't be much in the way of window shopping/lurking.

For the most part I take up space in the lounge, yet on occasions I'll venture to other forums knowing that if I have a question there'll be a few knowledgeable folks that in short time will address my issue.

Ain't nuttin' but sumpthin' to ponder and speculate...

Nick-

"All I'm saying is that you can take all those big numbers and attribute them, for the most part, to a small group of posters."

90,000 unique IPs per month generate 45,000 posts per month. Lots of people are posting lots of stuff. No way "a small group" is posting 45,000 posts per month.

9,500,000 page views per month. Lots of people are reading lots of stuff. The average visitor reads 30 pages per visit.

No doubt there's a wealth of knowledge on this site to be gleaned.

There's no telling how many pages I average coz I never sign off.

The thing about statistics is that you can represent either side w/equal enthusiasm.

Marketers askew results on a regular basis.

Not only do 3 out of 4 doctors recommend this for relief, non-blind, somewhat randomized, by the high non-participation sector, survey of 1/2 of .001% of the folks that live in the Nebraska corn belt region that were offered one whole dollar to fill out the survey and mailed it back, the vast majority or almost/close to 90% agree.

If I want to know sumpthin' 'bout S&W I'll come here and snoop around.

Usually I can find it w/o asking for help, but I try to qualify my worthiness by searching first and asking second.

I agree that numbers can be entertaining...
-------------------
"90,000 unique IPs per month generate 45,000 posts per month. Lots of people are posting lots of stuff. No way "a small group" is posting 45,000 posts per month."

My contention is that a small group is responsible for a large majority of the posts.

Also, I think that a lot of the other posts are made by folks that make up the almost silent but not quite majority of new members.

I see a lot of folks come through ask a question or two, maybe offer something for sale and disappear into the night.

45K posts in 30 days is only 1500 posts a day. 500 folks averaging 3 posts a day.

That's not a whole lot of folks and it doesn't have to be the same group though quite a few will be regulars.

That's why I'd like to see some number crunching that throws out the administration, staff, private and classifieds forums. Getting down to what I consider the core of the site that revolves around the enthusiasts/hobbyists.

"No way "a small group" is posting 45,000 posts per month."

Way...

Your theory is flawed.

I don't find 500 people "A small number".

Maybe you should start your own forum and find out how many people 500 really is.

Go debate someone else, I am done.

So did we touch on when the points expire or how to tell if our points have expired?

I think the points, much like a Gander Mnt rewards certificate, expire w/time unless you're being put on double-secret probation...

For starters this relates to your concept:"Post count is irrelevant in any statistic we track."

"Unique users per day: 7000+" 500 is only around 7% of that so, maybe 500 is a small number.

"Unique IP addresses per month: 95,000+" 500 unique IPs is only around .5(that is one-half)%.

"Page views per month: 9,500,000, (that is 9.5 Million.)" Thanks for the tip.

"We average well over 1000 new members per month." 500 is less than half. (a month)

There's nothing flawed w/my hypothesis. You don't provide the raw numbers to enable a theory.

Thanks for the offer, however I can still count into the hundreds.(Now, that's a lot of fingers and toes!)

I'm not debating you or anyone else.

I'm offering explanations and examples on how numbers can be used to represent either point of view in a discussion.

There is no right or wrong to be levied or assessed.

The point is the interpretation of various numbers, their values and their effect on the model at hand can be somewhat dependent on the desired results.

The concept in translating these values at times is steeped in the outcome we wish to portray.

The beauty of statistics is being able to prove what you want w/the quantity and differing sums of numbers that help represent your preference in a particular situation.

Stick a fork in me coz I'm done as well, but wasn't that fun?

It's all good coz sometimes ya gotta take the medulla oblongata out for a stretch and tickle the keyboards.

Now for a little stroll w/cerebral cortex I wanna give a shout out to the administration, staff and little something special for the big guy, Lee...

It seems I am the person who started this "discussion" because I did not understand the reasoning and meaning behind a "warning".Now I do know what it means and will not partake in the action that resulted in it.Thanks for it and the "Ding,Dong" meaning........Mike

I get spanked every so often-the last time was for a violation involving creative spelling-which in hindsight was deserved - I knew better Every now and then in the heat of the moment we all .........mess up and Lee's reminders kick us back in line-It's kinda like being at his house watching the game and you let slip an expletive or leave a ring on the coffee table from your glass. No big deal but tighten up. Now if you get rowdy and throw up on his easy chair (like I did last year ) punishments do get a bit stern
